Grad night 2014 What could be better than walking into Six Flags New England (a park known for its thrilling roller coasters) and seeing a group of extremely boisterous young men, soon-to-be Marian Grads, riding the carousel and squealing with delight? Maybe it's the knowledge that from 8pm to 1am the park was closed to the general public and open only to a select number of graduating classes. Or perhaps it's the fact that 45 Marian Seniors and 5 chaperones spent that time hopping from ride to ride, winning giant stuffed animals, and enjoying park delicacies like funnel cake and ice cream. Or it could just be knowing that, even with so many Marian's first Grad Night at Six Flags could tell you that grown up changes just around the corner for the Class of it was most definitely a success. To end the French 4/5 and Italian classes this year, Mrs. A and students visited the Centre Culturelle Francais (formerly known as the French Library) in Boston. Students were treated to a tour of the gorgeous building, formerly a mansion, on Marlborough Street. After the library visit, it was off to Boston’s famous Italian North End for lunch at Mother Anna’s and a stop for canolis. The students enjoyed their day of speaking (and singing) en francais and italiano.

“Join the Circus”: Mainstagers Light Up the Stage with Barnum

“Join the Circus Like you wanted to-like you always wanted to-run away” was the theme of the Marian Mainstagers spring musical, Barnum, which was presented on May 2, 3and 4 to an enthusiastic audience of family, friends and children of all ages.

The production starred senior, Michael Costa in the title role of Phineas T. Barnum, and senior Laura Cantwell as his wife Chairy. Filled with colorful clowns and tuneful production numbers, the show certainly met with enthusiastic applause from the audiences during its three performances. Set against a backdrop of a three-ring circus, the show chronicles the history of circus showman, Taylor Barnum whose personal anthem was to splash the world with color and prove that “there’s a sucker born every minute.”

Sophomore, Kendra Johnson delivered beautiful vocals as the love-interest Swedish nightingale, Jenny Lind and sophomore Nick Antonellis surprised audiences with his energetic and vocally sound performance of James Bailey who convinces Barnum to partner with him to create the greatest show on earth. Newcomer to the Mainstagers, freshman, Ryan Sauer displayed his musical talent as percussionist for the production and also performed the cameo role of Thom Thumb, the smallest man in the world. His number, “Bigger Isn’t Better” proved to be a tour-de-force for both him and the audience.

The colorful costumes for the production, providing a visual feast for the audience, were designed by senior, Samantha Bennett with the assistance of Mrs. Jeanine Cantwell. Judging from the reaction of the three audiences, the production brought a splash of color to their lives.

On Friday evening, May 9th, over 100 freshmen, sophomores and their guests gathered in the Marian High School Cafeteria to celebrate their annual semi-formal. A memento of the evening was neon sunglasses personalized with “Marian Semi 2014”.

Mrs. Kathy Zompetti and Mrs.Carol Santucci prepared the “finger food” ordered by the class officers: chicken fingers, buffalo chicken fingers, french fries, mozzarella sticks, fresh fruit skewers and neon frosted cupcakes for dessert.

For the first time in a long time, our annual auction was held at Marian High School with over 150 guests in attendance. The gym was transformed into a Casino themed hall and the centerpieces imaged a sport/ activity celebrating all that Marian had accomplished. Our guests enjoyed an evening of laughter and reminiscing, and joined in on the Black Jack, Craps, Roulette, Texas Hold’em Poker and the Wheel of Fortune tables. This event wouldn’t be possible without the help of our volunteers who made the evening a huge success. Everyone had a great time, and we look forward to doing this again next year.

Purple Ribbon Mother’s Day Run 2014

Since 2003, the Purple Ribbon Run has been held at Bow High School, Bow, NH, an event inspired by Marian High School graduate Michelle Cadorette (class of 1987). On May 11, 2014 the annual race honored the memory of Michelle. There were over 300 registrants for the 5k run and 2 mile walk. Elite runner and race organizer John Mortimer provides registration for the event and precision timing of the race and the walk each year. Walking in the race were Troy Johnson ’87 and his family, Gregory and Diana Michel (parents of Helen Michel’87), and Edmund and Judy Cadorette (Michelle’s parents). Marian students and alumni are welcome to participate on Mother’s Day 2015! For additional information, visit www.thymomahope.org

www.marianhigh.org 19 Marian People Nature Club On Friday, May 16th, the Marian Nature Club and their moderator, Amy Norton met up for their first trip to Animal Adventures, an animal rescue center in Bolton, Massachusetts. Seven students were led by handler, Will, who started by leading the group to the farm animals outside. There were pygmy and Nubian goats, a pot-bellied pig, golden pheasants and doves. Next, the students were led out back, where a pair of foxes and a Canadian Lynx awaited them. The foxes were curious and watchful, but the lynx just wanted to sleep. Will then led the group into an incredibly hot and humid room full of reptiles. In one of the glass enclosures rested the largest snake any of the students had ever seen; it was an anaconda! Also behind separate enclosures was another snake, a crocodile, several alligators and a large water monitor.

The students stepped outside again and were finally led into the main building where the rest of the animals resided. Among these interesting creatures was an agitated Fennec Fox, two large Eagle Owls, a Bush Baby, ferrets, chinchillas, degus, a lazy woodchuck and a very loud and entertaining Kookaburra. The next room contained African and North American Porcupines, a wallaby, kangaroo, caiman, ring-tailed lemurs, a marmoset, skunks and coatis. The students were allowed to pet the skunk, wallaby and an alligator!

Finally, the last room was another hot and humid one. It was filled with tortoises, armadillo, lizards, snakes and spiders. The big attraction was “Bulldog”, a large constrictor-type snake that each student took turns holding. The guide was very informative with loads of information on each animal about habitat, behavior and handling. He also let the group know that since they take in so many exotic animals that are no longer able to be kept by their current owners, they will soon be expanding, as it takes a lot of room to be so hospitable to these animals that need homes. Animal Adventures is a fun educational facility that is definitely worth a visit! The Nature Club finished off the trip with a stop for ice cream at Colonial Candies down the street (of course!).
