CHALKY, CLASSY NIGHT UNDER THE STARS >GUN= SALUTES IN STEPHEN Saturday=s ADowns After Dark@ program at Churchill did not exactly turn out to be a gambler=s paradise, as heavy favorites FOSTER TOUR-DE-FORCE scooped three of the night=s five graded events, while lower- priced horses landed the other two races. However, those on hand were treated to some very high-class performances from horses sure to be reckoned with in the remaining 5 1/2 months of 2017. The night=s graded action began with the GIII Matt Winn S. in which >TDN Rising Star= McCraken (Ghostzapper) galloped away from five mostly overmatched rivals to score by 2 1/4 lengths as the 3-10 favorite. The underrated Kasaqui (Arg) (Lasting Approval) was bet in half from his morning line of 6-1 and made amends for a runner-up effort in last year=s GII Wise Dan S. with a 2 3/4-length success, while Forever Unbridled (Unbridled=s Song), a dual Grade I winner allowed to train on at five, exuded all sorts class in winning the GII Fleur de Lis H. at overlaid odds of 11-10. The evening=s final graded event saw >TDN Rising Star= Sweeping Paddy (Paddy O=Prado) shift off heels at the furlong grounds and race home a comfortable winner of the GIII Regret S. as the 18-5 second choice. Gun Runner | Coady photography IN TDN EUROPE TODAY by Alan Carasso BRADY’S BEAR READY FOR ROYAL APPOINTMENT Not so many moons ago, there was an argument put forth by Nick Brady makes a belated return to Royal Ascot this week with some American-based connections that went something like: his G2 Coventry S. contender Brother Bear (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Horses coming out of the World Cup--winners and losers alike- -have raced with success in the Foster. Street Cry (Ire) (2002) and Curlin (2008) followed up on romping wins in the desert with similarly powerful victories beneath the Twin Spires, while Silver Charm (1998) and Captain Steve (2001) were just beaten in the Foster after leading into the final furlong. Despite a race which on paper looked to have plenty of early speed signed on, Gun Runner made the lead with a minimum of fuss and galloped his rivals into submission in a final time that would have threatened the track record had Florent Geroux not taken his foot off the pedal late. Stanford did the chasing from the outside with Breaking Lucky in the box seat and Honorable Duty, the only other rival truly in the market, a stalking fourth. With Stanford keeping Gun Runner honest enough, the half-mile went up in :47.23 and the presser looked poised to make a race of it as he tried to make a run at the front-runner midway on the final turn. But Florent Geroux was still hard against the race favorite nearing the stretch, put away Stanford with a burst of speed at the three-sixteenths marker, swapped leads a time or two inside the furlong and ran out a most impressive winner. ROYAL ASCOT MEMORIES: SCENIC BLAST BRADY=S BEAR READY FOR By Trent Masenhelder ROYAL APPOINTMENT On the morning of June 16, 2009--the opening day of Royal Ascot--Australian trainer Daniel Morton, who was normally quite reserved when he had a runner engaged in a feature race, was brimming with confidence, the then 37-year-old smiling from ear to ear. Morton had favourite Scenic Blast (Aus) (Scenic {Ire}) entered in the G1 King's Stand S. It was the trainer's first trip away with a horse, and everything had gone to plan. Scenic Blast's wonderful temperament made him the perfect horse to travel. He settled in well in the UK, eating up and impressing in his work. He was fit and raring to go. Brady=s Bear Ready For Royal Appointment cont. from p1 Brady=s father, James Cox Brady, had horses in training in Ireland with Vincent O=Brien in the 1960s, the pair combining for some high profile success, while Brady=s business interests in Ireland also extend to once owning the Cashel Palace Hotel in Tipperary which was reportedly purchased earlier this year by a group of investors including John Magnier. However, while Brady=s black, white and red silks are a relatively new sight to Irish racegoers they are quickly becoming familiar through the exploits of half of his current six-strong string. In a six-week period from the middle of April, the trio of Khukri (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus)), Brother Bear and Grandee (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) each won a stakes race and put themselves in line for even greater challenges throughout this season.

Further interest for Brady that weekend could be added by Khukri aiming for a six-furlong listed race and an unraced 2-year- old named Joust (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) on target to make his debut in a six-furlong maiden on the same card. Khukri proved himself a sprinter on the up when winning a listed race at Navan in April but a pulled muscle behind, sustained when finishing fifth to Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) on his last start in the G3 Lacken S. at Naas on May 21, meant connections had to abandon a potential VICE PRESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS Gary King Royal Ascot challenge and give him a bit more time to recover Twitter: @garykingTDN before his next assignment. The Todd Pletcher-trained mare was acquired by Cooper out of the David Wachman stable in 2014 for a partnership that included himself, Tattersalls Marketing Director Jimmy George and TDN columnist Bill Oppenheim, and was sent to Graham Motion as a well-bred maiden winner with the potential for improvement. Photo Call duly rose through the ranks and after gaining a Grade III victory in the Violet S. at Monmouth in 2015 she achieved the holy grail of a Grade I win when successful on her next start in the GI Rodeo Drive S. at Santa Anita. Cont. p4 TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 4 OF 13 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 18 JUNE, 2017

Armed with both a formidable race record and pedigree, Photo Call=s next engagement was at the Keeneland November Sale two months later, where she fetched $3-million from Crupi=s New Castle Farm as a racing and breeding prospect. She subsequently rewarded her new connections when claiming the scalp of Tepin (Bernstein) when scoring under an enterprising ride in the GI First Lady S. at Keeneland a year later. Back to the more immediate focus of the Royal meeting at Ascot and apart from the obvious scenario of blue-blooded racehorses running for significant prize-money, honour and glory while also laying the foundations for future lucrative breeding careers, Cooper is keen to emphasise the significant role racing plays in binding family ties. AThe great thing about this week and Nick=s involvement is that he is coming over to Ascot, for probably the first time in about 40 years, and he is coming with his daughter Kim [Cutler], herself a keen equestrian, and her children, so there will be three generations of the family attending. I think that adds hugely to an already wonderful occasion.@

Back to Flemington for his next start, Scenic Blast scored a brilliant victory in the G1 Newmarket H., becoming the 11th horse to complete the Lightning S./ Newmarket H. double. Cont. p5

As soon as he did, Scenic Blast displayed a devastating burst of speed to gap his rivals. Morton said he knew the horse was special the first time he sat on him. Despite Scenic Blast having not yet raced, Morton called part-owner Elio Galante and told him, 'this is a superstar.' Scenic Blast was named Australian Racehorse of the Year in 2008-09 and raced until he was seven. The explosive sprinter, who also competed in Japan, Hong Kong and America, was retired in 2012 after fracturing his near side hind leg in a trackwork gallop. He bowed out with eight wins (three Group 1s) and 12 minor placings from 31 starts and A$2.1-million in earnings. "Scenic Blast and [stablemate] Scenic Shot took us on a great ride. With Scenic Blast, we went to England, then Japan then Hong Kong. It was really cool and my family got to travel with us all the way," said Morton. Scenic Blast spent 18 months being nursed back from injury before joining the Off The Track programme, which supports the transition of racehorses into new careers, as an ambassador.
