Department of Humanities and Science

Vision  To strengthen the knowledge base of Mathematics, Applied Sciences and Humanities which are fundamentally correlated to various branches of engineering and technology with the vision to orient the students to self-learning, self-discipline and involvement through innovative teaching learning process.

Mission  To establish a center of excellence in basic sciences such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry that provide foundation for engineering studies and also in communication skills that helps students to express themselves effectively.  To provide a unique learning environment for the students, preparing the students at par with the global technical workforce, building confidence, character and human values.  To sharpen and modulate the soft skills, management skills, skills of applying basic knowledge to technical learning through the study of Applied Science and Humanities.

Establishment of the Department  Department of Humanities and Science has been established since 1954 in Government Polytechnic Ahmedabad.  The Department inculcates basic knowledge in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English which is the foundation of Engineering education as Engineering and Science are, by their very nature, humanistic and socially derived enterprises. The department is affiliated with Gujarat Technological University.  English language is pervasive and spoken throughout the world. It is the language for all walks of life. A good command and communication in English are essential in the modern world to wield not only respect but in all professional transactions.  Mathematics, the queen of sciences is the basis for all branches of Science, Engineering and Technology as all the complex ideas can be logically expressed by equations and formulae.  The study of Physics uncovers the mysteries of nature through the knowledge of properties of matter.  And the study of Chemistry is crucial in all manufacturing processes where the transformation of one form of material into another takes place.

Students’ Interaction General Department is the backbone of the Government Polytechnic, Ahmedabad. Initially all the students in the 1st and 2nd semester are welcomed by the General Department. They are at very tender age and we happily take the responsibility of grooming them who are coming from various departments. General Department not only takes care of their academics, but also looks after their individual development and encourages them to participate in NSS/NCC activities, sports and other extra- curricular activities. At this tender

25 age, we help them to gel and get accustomed with the new environment of the institute. As many students come from remote places, we make them feel at home.

Faculty Strength  At Present, Mrs. Mamta C. Shah is Head of the Department, having total 26 years of experience.  Department of Humanities and Science has strength of total 12 regular and experienced faculties along with 1 ad-hoc faculty.  Out of 13, total 6 faculties are having Doctorate (PhD) and 1 faculty is pursuing Doctoral studies and they have many Research Papers Published in National & International Journals.  Dr. Almas Juneja, faculty of English is the author of the text book ‘Active English’, Published by McMillan, prescribed by GTU from 2012 to till date.  Dr. Duhita Lakhatariya has successfully completed the training for the ‘Associate NCC Officer’ at Officers Training Academy, Gwalior for the period of 3 month in the army environment where she got commissioned as ‘lieutenant’.  Dr. Pankajkumar Sharma has successfully completed the PRCN Training for the ‘Associate NCC Officer’ (ANO) at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Kamptee, Nagpur for a period of 3 months in the military environment and got commissioned as ‘Lieutenant’. He was also nominated as an ANO for representing Gujarat NCC Directorate contingent at the Republic Day Camp (RDC), 2020. The Gujarat contingent secured 4th rank at national level completion.

Infrastructure  Since the academic background of the most of the students is SSC, they are required to be taught Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English to fill the gap between schooling and engineering program. General Department plays the role of bridge between their schooling and their further technical education.  These new students get the first-hand experience of doing practical with working models in Physics and Chemistry.  For the first time in the tutorials of English and Math’s, the students can relate their theoretical knowledge with the real life application

26

 With the help of presentation, group discussion and role play, their personality is enhanced and they become confident and well-groomed. With the help of power point presentation and report writing, they learn to use the latest teaching-learningmodules which will make them go a long way..

NSS programmes & Activities सर्वे भर्वꅍतु सुखिनः। सर्वे सꅍतु खनरामयाः

Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, emphasized on the Service to Community / Villages as an essential tool for the progress of Nation. For the progress of community is the progress of Nation. With the dream of equitable development of all, the National Policy on Education 1986, with modification undertaken in 1992, envisaged that the opportunities should be provided to youth to involve them in national and social development through educational institutions and outside agencies. Students are required to participate in one or the other existing schemes, namely, the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, wherein they are sensitized on problems faced by underprivileged communities and bring positive change in their life through social service. The cardinal principle of the programme is that it is organized by the students themselves and both students and teachers through their combined participation in social service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of national development. Besides, the students, particularly, obtain work experience which might help them to find avenues of self-employment or employment in any organisation at the end of their university career. With the vision of Community Service, National Development and Equitable Progress for all, Government Polytechnic – Ahmedabad offers National Service Scheme to all the interested students, and provides them an opportunity of personality development through Social Service. Broad spectrum of activities is undertaken throughout the year by Faculty and student volunteers in the areas of Healthcare, Environment, and sensitization on local issues. The awareness programs, camps, and drives are undertaken by institute to contribute in social service. These activities are aimed . at making education more relevant to the present situation and meet the needs of the community . Provide opportunities to the students to play their role in planning and executing development projects which would not only help in creating sustainable community but also to improve of quality of life of the economically and socially weaker sections of the community . Developing qualities of leadership by discovering the latent potential of students . Emphasis on dignity of labour and self-help and the need for combining physical work with intellectual pursuits . Encouraging youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development and promote national integration, through corporate living and cooperative action. The NSS at Government Polytechnic – Ahmedabad has taken many initiatives on community development and social service the glimpses are as follows
