PREFACE TO THE COMPUTER-FILE VERSION This version of my dissertation is divided into seven chapters, numbered 0 to 6. Chapters 1 through 6 contain the corresponding chapters of my dissertation. Chapter 0 contains the front matter (acknowledgements, abstract, and so forth), as well as the appendix and the sources cited. This version of my dissertation was taken from the Graduate Linguistics Student Association (GLSA) version, which had several typos corrected over the deposit version. This version differs from the GLSA version with respect to some diagrams. Mainly in tableaux, I have substituted bracketing and subscripted morae for tree diagrams in representing syllables, as below: {C V} {C V} = 2 cv syllables {C V} = a syllable with a long vowel {C V C} = a bi-moraic closed syllable {C V C} = a mono-moraic closed syllable {C V { C } V } = 2 syllables with a geminate consonant There are still some diagrams in their original forms. I hope that these are recoverable from context. The pagination is different from the original version. I have chosen to paginate the chapters separately. There is a table of contents for each chapter at the beginning of that chapter. The first chapter summarizes the goals of the dissertation and introduces most of the constraints used later in the work. The main goal of this work is to characterize sequences of consonants by characterizing codas in the most general way possible. Since this one of the earlier works employing Prince and Smolensky’s 1993 Optimality manuscript, I include an introduction to the theory in this chapter. The second chapter includes a factorial typology involving several of the constraints introduced in chapter 1. This typology builds on Prince and Smolensky’s factorial typology by employing a more detailed syllable structure. Also, there are analyses of facts from the languages Wiyot and Italian. The constraint *LONG-VOWEL is introduced in this chapter (and plays a role in chapter 4) Another question dealt with here is the content of underlying form--in particular, the result of specifying a “weight by position” mora in the lexicon. I also discuss the role of lexical levels in OT. The third chapter deals with intervocalic consonant sequences of Finnish. A search of a machine readable dictionary revealed a coronal asymmetry in Finnish. Essentially, in Finnish a hypercharacterized syllable may be closed by a geminate or by a coronal consonant, but not by a non-coronal, non-geminate. An Optimality Theoretic analysis of this fact is offered. One aspect of this analysis is that no root not meeting the coronal only requirement would be posited by a Finnish language learner (Stampean Occultation). The fourth chapter includes analyses of two languages, Fula and Koya, both of which permit long vowels before sequences of consonants, but not before geminates. This is analyzed by means of a syllable appendix--a consonant directly adjoined to the syllable node without an intervening mora. This version of an appendix consonant differs from the word-final version. Both Fula and Koya have cases where we might expect long vowels to precede geminates. In Fula, these cases surface with a simple consonant (corresponding to the geminate), while in Koya, these forms surface with a short vowel. Optimality Theoretic analyses for these mappings are given. The fifth chapter focuses on the topic of syllable appendixes and appendixal consonants. The main part of the chapter is a discussion of several (closely related) Australian languages and why they should be analyzed employing appendix consonants. I provide a sketchy Optimality Theoretic analysis. The balance of the chapter is devoted to questions about the appendix position. The idea of analyzing appendixes by means of Alignment is discussed, including how this could derive different sites for adjunction (word, syllable, and so forth.) The nature of the coronal asymmetry is discussed and a phonetic scale is offered as a possible explanation. The sixth chapter deals with topics not dealt with earlier in the dissertation, including a comparison between the Optimality Theoretic approach and an approach where constraints are set to on or off. Also discussed is the Linked Gemination approach to the representation of geminates, which is at odds with the moraic theory of geminates. Another matter covered was the role of linking, both in connection with Linked Gemination and the Coda Condition Approach, including discussion of an approach to hypercharacterization that employs coda conditions. McCarthy This dissertation deals with the possibility of having syllable final consonants, including geminate consonants, and the interaction of such consonants with syllable weight and vowel length, by means of the moraic tier. The goal of this work is to have the range of patterns of consonant occurrence and vowel length follow from simple patterns in simple interactions. A chapter is devoted to making predictions about the phonological patterns possible in the system. These are made through the interaction of simple phonological constraints, with the adoption of Optimality Theory.

Muller The Ohio State University Cypriot Greek contrasts singleton and geminate consonants in word-initial position. These segments are of particular interest to phonologists since two divergent representational frameworks, moraic theory (Hayes 1989) and timing-based frameworks, including CV or X-slot theory (Clements and Keyser 1983, Levin 1985), account for the behavior of initial geminates in substantially different ways. The investigation of geminates in Cypriot Greek allows these differences to be explored. As will be demonstrated in a formal analysis of the facts, the patterning of geminates in Cypriot is best accounted for by assuming that the segments are dominated by abstract timing units such as X- or C-slots, rather than by a unit of prosodic weight such as the mora. Introduction Cypriot Greek is of particular interest, not only because it is one of the few varieties of Modern Greek maintaining a consonant length contrast, but more importantly because it exhibits this contrast in word-initial position: péfti ‘Thursday’ vs. ppéfti ‘he falls’.Although word-initial geminates are less common than their word-medial counterparts, they are attested in dozens of the world’s languages in addition to Cypriot Greek.

    AN AUTOSEGMENTAL/METRICAL ANALYSIS OF SERBO-CROATIAN INTONATION * Svetlana Godjevac Abstract Based on the qualitative analysis of the Fo contours of wide range ofutterances (broad focus declaratives, broad focus questions, nar­ row focus declaratives, narrow focus questions, vocative chant, and prompting intonation) utterred by nine native speakers, an autoseg­ mental/metrical analysis of Standard Selbo-Croatian intonation is pro­ posed. This analysis argues for sparse specification of tones, contra Inkelas and Zee (1988), and two levels of prosodic phrasing: the phonological word and the intonational phrase. The phonological word is defined in te!lDS of a lexical pitch accent and an initial word boundary tone, whereas the intonational phrase is a domain defined by pitch range manipulations (expansion, compression, reset, downstep) and final intonational phrase boundary_ tones. 1 Introduction Standard Serbo-Croatian (SC) is a pitch-accent language. This paper investigates the operation of complete consonantal assimilations within this framework. Complete assimilation results in the complete identity of the two sounds involved. Evidence from English casual speech is offered supporting the principle claiming that complete assimilations normally occur only when the segments involved are already very similar. Sandhi phenomena in Arabic and Yakut are shown to support this principle. Latin assimilations and Finnish consonant gradation are considered. In this paper, we follow the acquisition of the phonological word in Hebrew, attending to the prosodic word (number of syllables), the foot (stress patterns), the syllable and its sub-syllabic units (onset and coda), and the segments and their features. For each type of phonological structure, we (a) provide distributional facts in Hebrew, in order to evaluate the role of frequency in phonological development; (b) discuss the constraints active during the different stages of development; and (c) introduce the simplification strategies children employ on their way to faithful targets. At the end we consider the resources children use during their phonological development. Craig Melchert, Chair In this dissertation I will attempt to answer the following question: why does Classical Armenian have three dierent reexes for the Proto-Armenian epenthetic vowel word- initially before old Proto-Indo-European consonant clusters? Two of the vowels, e and a, occur in the same phonological environment, and even in doublets (e.g., Classical ełbayr beside dialectal ałbär ‘brother’). The main constraint driving this asymmetry is the promotion of the Sonority Sequenc- ing Principle in the grammar. Because sibilants are more sonorous than stops, the promo- tion of the Sonority Sequencing Principle above the Strict Layer Hypothesis causes speak- ers to create a semisyllable to house the sibilant extraprosodically. This extraprosodic structure is not required for old consonant-resonant clusters since they already conform to the Sonority Sequencing Principle. Because Armenian has sonority-sensitive stress, the secondary stress placed on word-initial epenthetic vowels triggers a vowel change in all words without extraprosodic structure, i.e. with the old consonant-resonant clusters. Therefore Proto-Armenian */@łbayR/ becomes Classical Armenian [èł.báyR] ‘brother,’ but Proto-Armenian */<@s>tipem/ with extraprosodic <@s> becomes [<@s>.tì.pém] ‘I rush’ because the schwa is outside the domain of stress assignment.

The last 15 years have brought about dramatic changes in (Generative) Phonology; We have witnessed the times of segmental Generative Phonology coming to an end. Radically new conceptions of Phonology have developed. Instead of taking the input and output of Phonology as strings of linearly ordered segments, as it was the case in classical Generative Phonology, phonological units are now assumed to display an internal hierarchical organization; from year to year, the complexity of this internal organization seems to increase, and new research paradigms such as Autosegmental Phonology, Metrical Phonology, Prosodic Phonology, Dependency Phonology have developed and worked on phonological representations and models that have little to do with, say, SPE phonology.
