Original Article Obesity/Overweight Pak Armed Forces Med J 2013; 63 (4): 534-38 OBESITY/OVERWEIGHT AMONG HEALTHY ADULT MALES SEEKING EMPLOYMENT IN PAKISTAN ARMY Muhammad Younas*, Afzal Ahmad Khan**, Muhammad Siddique*, Rashid Aleem Ahsan** *Combined Military Hospital, Risalpur,** Recruitment Office Risalpur Cantonment ABSTRACT Objective: To calculate the frequency of individuals having overweight / obesity as determined by body mass index. Study Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration: Medical Inspection Room Engineer centre Risalpur and Department of Pathology Combined Military Hospital, Risalpur from 1st March 2010 to 30th September 2010. Material and Methods: Five hundred males between 17-23 years of age who were physically fit and had height within their 95th confidence interval, were enrolled in the study by non-probability convenience sampling. Results: Among 500 males, mean age was 20 ± 1.2 years, and age range was 17 to 23 years. Among them 418 cases belonged to rural areas and 82 candidates belonged to urban areas. Ninety seven (19%), belonged to group 1, 347 (69%) individuals belonged to group 2, 44 (8.8%) individuals belonged to group 3 and 12 (2.4%) individuals belonged to group 4. Blood pressure and pulse was recorded under standardized conditions. In group 2 (n= 347) only 8 individuals had BP > 120/80 and < 140/90 mmHg whereas in group 3 and 4 (n=56), 7 individuals had BP >120/80 and < 140/90 mmHg and 2 individuals had BP > 140/90 mmHg, however none of the individual had any irregularity of pulse among all groups. Among the 500 individuals, a questionnaire was distributed, 93% knew that overweight was related to diseases. -

Group identity and civil-military relations in India and Pakistan by Brent Scott Williams B.S., United States Military Academy, 2003 M.A., Kansas State University, 2010 M.M.A., Command and General Staff College, 2015 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Security Studies College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2019 Abstract This dissertation asks why a military gives up power or never takes power when conditions favor a coup d’état in the cases of Pakistan and India. In most cases, civil-military relations literature focuses on civilian control in a democracy or the breakdown of that control. The focus of this research is the opposite: either the returning of civilian control or maintaining civilian control. Moreover, the approach taken in this dissertation is different because it assumes group identity, and the military’s inherent connection to society, determines the civil-military relationship. This dissertation provides a qualitative examination of two states, Pakistan and India, which have significant similarities, and attempts to discern if a group theory of civil-military relations helps to explain the actions of the militaries in both states. Both Pakistan and India inherited their military from the former British Raj. The British divided the British-Indian military into two militaries when Pakistan and India gained Independence. These events provide a solid foundation for a comparative study because both Pakistan’s and India’s militaries came from the same source. Second, the domestic events faced by both states are similar and range from famines to significant defeats in wars, ongoing insurgencies, and various other events. -

Dutton Series Overview This China Maritime Report on Gwadar is the second in a series of case studies on China’s Indian Ocean “strategic strongpoints” (战略支点). People’s Republic of China (PRC) officials, military officers, and civilian analysts use the strategic strongpoint concept to describe certain strategically valuable foreign ports with terminals and commercial zones owned and operated by Chinese firms.1 Each case study analyzes a different port on the Indian Ocean, selected to capture geographic, commercial, and strategic variation.2 Each employs the same analytic method, drawing on Chinese official sources, scholarship, and industry reporting to present a descriptive account of the port, its transport infrastructure, the markets and resources it accesses, and its naval and military utility. -

Journal of the Punjab University Historical Society Volume No. 31, Issue No. 1, January - June 2018 Akhtar Hussain * Politics of Combined Opposition Parties (Cop) During Ayub Khan Era (1958-1969) Abstract This Paper is about the Combined Opposition Parties, an electoral alliance which challenged Ayub Khan in the 1965 Presidential election. The alliance not only challenged but it gave a tough time through its effective mass mobilisation both in the urban and rural areas to one of the strongest military ruler in Pakistan. The alliance played a vital role in initiating critical debate and discussion in place of dead conformism, in rekindling and refurbishing the enfeebled and dying flame of democracy in Pakistan and thus setting the nation a new towards a democratic destiny. Furthermore this alliance made a female as its candidate for Presidentship which is a debatable issue among the orthodox Muslim scholars and religio-political parties of the country. The paper focuses on the political background, formation, strategies and politics of COP to get rid of the military ruler. The paper is mainly descriptive in approach yet partial analytical approach is also employed. Both primary and secondary sources of information are used in this article. Introduction: Ayub Khan came into power after imposition of martial law in the country in October 1958. 1 He assured the nation about lifting of martial law with the fulfilment of its objectives i.e. removal of all the political, social, economic and administrative confusions that prevailed in the country.2 He banned all the Political parties, their offices were sealed and their capital was confiscated as according to him, “…the politicians had ruined the country through their corrupt practices”.3 In the first couple of years, he paid attention towards administration of the country and strengthening his rule. -

General The Centre for land Warfare Studies organised a seminar on “Situation in Pakistan and Implications for India” on 07 July 2011 at the Manekshaw Centre. The seminar was chaired by Shri Satish Chandra, former Deputy NSA and the speakers were AVM Kapil Kak (Retd), Prof C Raja Mohan, Mr Rana Banerji and Capt (IN) Alok Bansal. Brig Gurmeet Kanwal (Retd), Director CLAWS, presented Dr Mohan Guruswamy’s presentation on the subject. Selected officers from the armed forces, diplomats, members of the academic community and Pakistan scholars participated in the seminar. Shri Satish Chandra In his opening remarks, the chairman stated that Pakistan was going through turbulent times. The recent incident at Mehran naval base and the killing of Salim Shehzad are extremely worrisome and reflect the tumultuous situation in Pakistan. This seminar is an occasion to develop a snapshot of Pakistan and analyse the political situation. The deliberations should also take into account the internal politics of the country. It is important to question the impact of the withdrawal of MQM on PPP, the civil-military relations, the state of Pakistan’s institutions like the media, judiciary etc. Pakistan is suffering from 20 per cent inflation and has had a growth rate of almost 2% in the last two years. The main aspects of Pakistan’s foreign policy include its relations with India, US and China. Let us deliberate upon the current situation in Pakistan and its implications for India. AVM Kapil Kak (Retd) Pakistan is in a state of turmoil and moving closer to becoming a failed state.
