DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH,EDUCATION, AND WELFARE U.S. OFFICEOF EDUCATION BUREAU OF EDUCATIONFOR THE HANDICAPPED JULY1970 ONE OF THE DIFFICULTIES FACED BY MANY COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY TRAINING PROGRAMS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION OF HANDICAPPED CHILDREN AND YOUTH IS THE SECURING OF DOCTORAL LEVEL TRAINED FACULTY MEMBERS. THIS DIRECTORY IS DESIGNED TO ASSIST COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO LOCATE POTENTIAL SOURCES OF NEW FACULTY MEMBERS WHO ARE GRADUATING FROM DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN THE EDUCATION OF THE HANDICAPPED. DATA FOR THIS DIRECTORY WERE OBTAINED FROM A STUDY CONDUCTED IN 1968-69 UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH ON EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AND IN COOPERATION WITH THE DIVISION OF TRAINING PROGRAMS OF THE BUREAU OF EDUCATION FOR THE HANDICAPPED. A SURVEY FORM WAS SENT TO OVER 460 DIFFERENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE FALL OF 1968, INCLUDING MANY COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WHICH HAD NEVER SUBMITTED AN APPLICATION TO THE U. S. OFFICE OF EDUCATION FOR FUNDS TO PREPARE PERSONNEL IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION OF HANDICAPPED CHILDREN AND YOUTH. THE STUDY IDENTIFIED NEARLY ALL OF THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS IN THE UNITED STATES PREPARING PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL IN THE EDUCATION OF THE HANDICAPPED. THE LISTINGS IN THIS DIRECTORY ARE BASED UPON A 98.8% RETURN OF TFIE SURVEY FORMS. WHEN USING THIS DIRECTORY IT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED THAT SOME OF THE PROGRAMS LISTED MAY NOT HAVE ANY STUDENTS COMPLETING THEIR STUDIES DURING THE CURRENT ACADEMIC YEAR. HOWEVER, THE PROGRAMS LISTED DID INDICATE THE NUMBER OF DOCTORAL STUDENTS WHO WERE ENROLLED IN THEIR SPECIFIC PROGRAM DURING 1968-69. IF A SPEECH AND HEARING PROGRAM AT AN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION IS ADMINISTERED IN ANOTHER DEPARTMENT, A SEPARATE ENTRY IS PROVIDED. -1- HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY TO ASSIST IN DETERMINING WHERE TO ENQUIRE ABOUT POTENTIAL STAFF MEMBERS, THE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THIS DIRECTORY ARE 1) LISTED BY STATE AND 2) LISTED BY AREA OF TRAINING.THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES OF TRAINING AND ABBREVIATIONS ARE UTILIZED IN THIS DIRECTORY: MULTIHANDICAPPED (MH), MENTALLY RETARDED (MR), DEAF (D), VISUALLY HANDICAPPED (VH), CRIPPLED (CR), SPECIAL EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION (AD), LEARNING DISABILITY (LD), SPEECH AND HEARING (SH), AND EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED (ED). THE INCLUSION OR EXCLUSION OF ANY TRAINING PROGRAM WITHIN THIS DIRECTORY DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN ENDORSEMENT OR REJECTION BY THE U. S. OFFICE OF EDUCATION. IN ADDITION, NO SIGNIFICANCE CONCERNING THE QUALITY OF TRAINING PROGRAM OFFERED SHOULD BE ASSUMED BY THE INCLUSION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM AS A LISTING IN THIS DIRECTORY. -2- LISTING BY STATE DR.
