Understanding the anatomy of these taxa allows for a greater understanding of “ostrich-mimic” dinosaurs and character change during theropod dinosaur evolution. However, taphonomic processes during fossilisation often distort fossil remains. Retrodeformation oVers a means by which to recover a hypothesis of the original anatomy of the specimen, and 3D scanning technologies present a way to constrain and document the retrodeformation process. Using computed tomography (CT) scan data, specimen specific retrodeformations were performed on three-dimensionally preserved but taphonomically distorted skulls of the deinocheirid Garudimimus brevipes Barsbold, 1981 and the ornithomimids Struthiomimus altus Lambe, 1902 and Ornithomimus edmontonicus Sternberg, 1933. This allowed for a reconstruction of the adductor musculature, which was then mapped onto the crania, from which muscle mechanical advantage and bite forces were calculated pre- and post-retrodeformation. The extent of the rhamphotheca was varied in each taxon to represent morphologies found within modern Aves. Well constrained retrodeformation allows for increased confidence in anatomical and functional analysis of fossil specimens and oVers an opportunity to more fully understand the soft tissue anatomy of extinct taxa. New hadrosaurid postcranial material is reported, collected near Presa San Antonio, Parras de la Fuente municipality, Coahuila, Mexico, in a sedimentary sequence belonging to the upper Campanian of the Cerro del Pueblo Formation, in the Parras Basin. The skeletal remains include partial elements from the pelvic girdle (left ilium, right pubis, ischium, and incomplete sacrum), a distal end of a left femur, almost complete right and left tibiae, right metatarsals II and IV, cervical and caudal vertebrae. Also, partially complete forelimb elements are present, which are still under preparation. The pubis shows characters of the Lambeosaurinae morphotypes, but the lack of cranial elements does not allow us to directly differentiate this specimen from the already described hadrosaurid taxa from the studied area, such as Velafrons coahuilensis, Latirhinus uitstlani, and Kritosaurus navajovius. This specimen, referred as Lambeosaurinae indet., adds to the fossil record of the hadrosaurids in southern Laramidia during the Campanian. An isolated track and a trackway are located within the upper member at the Cockscomb, and an isolated track is in the capping sandstone member at Wesses Canyon. The upper member tracks are tridactyl pes imprints consisting of a longer, blunt digit III and shorter, blunt digits II-IV. This trace corresponds well to an ornithropod dinosaur as the trackmaker. The capping sandstone member track is a tridactyl pes with an elongate digit III and shorter digits II-IV. Claw impressions are present on the terminus of digits II and III. This trace is consistent with the pes impression of a one meter tall theropod. The tracks further highlight the diversity of dinosaurs in the capping sandstone of the Wahweap Formation. INTRODUCTION During the Late Cretaceous, North America, in particular the west- ern United States, was the site of a radiation of new dinosaurian genera. -

It had long arms and hands, with a mouth full of sharp teeth and a claw similar to that of the Velociraptor. Lived : Late Cretaceous period Fossils Found : Montana, U.S. Fun Fact : Bambiraptor is an important piece of the puzzle linking dinosaurs to birds. A 90-percent complete skeleton was discovered by a 14-year-old boy in 1995. It differs from other oviraptorids in the skull having a well-developed crest, the anterior margin of which is nearly vertical, and the dorsal margin of the skull and the anterior margin of the crest form nearly 90°; the nasal process of the premaxilla being less exposed on the dorsal surface of the skull than those in other known oviraptorids; the length of the frontal being approximately one fourth that of the parietal along the midline of the skull. Phylogenetic analysis shows that Nemegtia barsboldi is more closely related to Citipati osmolskae than to any other oviraptorosaurs. VAVREK,1 LEN V. HILLS2 and PHILIP J. CURRIE3 (Received 1 October 2012; accepted in revised form 30 May 2013) ABSTRACT. A hadrosaurid vertebra was recovered during a palynological survey of the Upper Cretaceous Kanguk Formation in the eastern Canadian Arctic. This vertebra represents the farthest north record of any non-avian dinosaur to date. Although highly abraded, the fossil nonetheless represents an interesting biogeographic data point. During the Campanian, when this vertebra was deposited, the eastern Canadian Arctic was likely isolated both from western North America by the Western Interior Seaway and from more southern regions of eastern North America by the Hudson Seaway. This fossil suggests that large-bodied hadrosaurid dinosaurs may have inhabited a large polar insular landmass during the Late Cretaceous, where they would have lived year-round, unable to migrate to more southern regions during winters. It is possible that the resident herbivorous dinosaurs could have fed on non-deciduous conifers, as well as other woody twigs and stems, during the long, dark winter months when most deciduous plant species had lost their leaves. This is due to the limited taxonomical determinations and the abundant undescribed material. This paper presents a new review of the up-to-date osteological record of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs from Mexico, based on published papers, unpublished data and direct observation of the material housed in Mexican paleonto- logical collections and in the field. Some diagnostic dinosaur bones were taxonomically reassigned and oth- ers reported in the literature were located in collections. We document new localities with dinosaur remains in Fronteras Sonora, Manuel Benavides and Jiménez Chihuahua, General Cepeda and Saltillo Coahuila. Additionally we report new material relating to tyrannosaurids, ornithomimids, ankylosaurs, ceratopsids and hadrosaurids which extends their geographic and temporal distribution in Mexico. This investigation has revealed a dinosaur faunal assemblage consistent with others studies of North American Late Cretaceous fau- nas, abundant large bodied dinosaurs and poorly represented small dinosaurs. -
Late Pleistocene Birds from Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Southern Appalachian Mountains, Georgia

Steadman1 Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Bartow County, Georgia, has produced late Quaternary fossils of 38 taxa of birds. The presence of extinct species of mammals, and three radiocarbon dates on mammalian bone collagen ranging from approximately 15,000 to 12,000 Cal B.P., indicate a late Pleistocene age for this fauna, although a small portion of the fossils may be Holocene in age. The birds are dominated by forest or woodland species, especially the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) and Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius). Species indicative of brushy or edge habitats, wetlands, and grasslands also are present. They include the Greater Prairie Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido, a grassland indicator) and Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica, characteristic of woody edges bordering grasslands). Both of these species reside today no closer than 1000+ km to the west (mainly northwest) of Georgia. An enigmatic owl, perhaps extinct and undescribed, is represented by two juvenile tarsometatarsi. The avifauna of Kingston Saltpeter Cave suggests that deciduous or mixed deciduous/coniferous forests and woodlands were the dominant habitats in the late Pleistocene of southernmost Appalachia, with wetlands and grasslands present as well. Prootic anatomy of a juvenile tyrannosauroid from New Jersey and its implications for the morphology and evolution of the tyrannosauroid braincase Chase D Brownstein Corresp. 1 1 Collections and Exhibitions, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Stamford, Connecticut, United States Corresponding Author: Chase D Brownstein Email address: [email protected] Among the most recognizable theropods are the tyrannosauroids, a group of small to large carnivorous coelurosaurian dinosaurs that inhabited the majority of the northern hemisphere during the Cretaceous and came to dominate large predator niches in North American and Asian ecosystems by the end of the Mesozoic era. The clade is among the best-represented of dinosaur groups in the notoriously sparse fossil record of Appalachia, the Late Cretaceous landmass that occupied the eastern portion of North America after its formation from the transgression of the Western Interior Seaway. Here, the prootic of a juvenile tyrannosauroid collected from the middle-late Campanian Marshalltown Formation of the Atlantic Coastal Plain is described, remarkable for being the first concrete evidence of juvenile theropods in that plain during the time of the existence of Appalachia and the only portion of theropod braincase known from the landmass. Phylogenetic analysis recovers the specimen as an “intermediate” tyrannosauroid of similar grade to Dryptosaurus and Appalachiosaurus. Comparisons with the corresponding portions of other tyrannosauroid braincases suggest that the Ellisdale prootic is more similar to Turonian forms in morphology than to the derived tyrannosaurids of the Late Cretaceous, thus supporting the hypothesis that Appalachian tyrannosauroids and other vertebrates were relict forms surviving in isolation from their derived counterparts in Eurasia.
