And popular Jodi Amruta Khanvilkar and Himanshu Malhotra couldn’t agree more. Having received the maximum perfect scores for their performances, Amruta and Himanshu have constantly tried to up the game with mind blowing dance acts – be it with zorbing or dancing on a revolving ladder. Amruta, who is referred to as Pataka Patni on the set, first met Himanshu a decade ago and the two have been best of friends ever since. They recently tied the knot, this year in January, and their participation in Nach Baliye 7 has been viewed as a celebration of their togetherness. On the Nach stage, Amruta and Himanshu have received the maximum Nach Powers and have been the favourite Jodi of all the judges. In fact, the judges have also gone on record to say that Himanshoo is the Ideal Husband! Speaking about their experiences in Nach Baliye, Himanshu said, “One memorable act of Nach Baliye 7 was when we did the Bhool Bhulaiyaa act because apart from dance, it also had a theatrical feel to it. Such an act was never done on Nach stage before where we had dialogues, dance and emotions all rolled into one. The highlight was when Amruta was dressed up as Manujlika and scared Chetan sir! Memorable 7 minutes for us – we were able to express ourselves as dancers, as actors and above all as performers” This year, Nach Baliye in its seventh season, is all about Too Much! Ekta Kapoor took up the reigns as the producer for this season and roped in Preity Zinta, Chetan Bhagat and Marzi Pestonji as judges for the show. Aired on STAR Plus from Monday to Saturday, at 11.30pm, the Daily Punchnama tested the compatibility of each Jodi. The core of the show, however, still remains on dance – with the main Sunday episode focusing on performances by the jodis as per the theme of the week. With all this and more, no wonder Nach Baliye 7 is Too Much! What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. Hence, at its most basic, this book explores the conjunctures and ruptures between these three forces: Bollywood, Australia and their interface, the diaspora. 1 Bollywood in Australia It would be useful to see, at the outset, how Bollywood here refers not only to the Bombay film industry, but is symbolic of the Indian and even the South Asian film industry.

Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994). That the pleasures associated with film going have influenced consumption in India is also true; the impact of film on various fashion trends is recognized by scholars (Dwyer and Patel, 2002, pp.
