James Cook was born on October 27, 1728 in Marton, England. His father was a farmer, but as James grew older he knew he wanted to explore the sea. When he was 18 years old he took an apprenticeship as a merchant seaman. This means he was learning how to trade and sail ships. Although he was doing well, Cook decided to enlist in the Royal Navy at the start of the Seven Years War. It was during the Seven Years War that James became a master at map making. His ability at surveying, navigating, and creating large accurate maps was noticed by those high up in the Navy.

Cook was given command of the Endeavour by England's Royal Society. The Endeavour was a ship. The ship wasn't fast, but it was strong and would be able to carry a lot of supplies.
Captain Cook introduced some strict, new rules to keep his crew healthy and safe. He told his men to wash every day and the ship to be kept very clean. He also told them that the bedding to be aired twice a week. Cook also brought lots of fresh fruit to keep his men from getting scurvy (an illness caused by not eating enough healthy food). These rules and his planning helped his men to stay healthy throughout the long voyages ahead.
Task: What were Cook's rules for keeping his crew healthy and safe?

Cook set off for his first journey on August 26, 1768. His main plan was to watch the planet Venus as it moved between the Earth and the Sun. He wanted to do this because it would help astronomers (people who studied the sky) to work out how far the Sun was from the Earth. He also hoped to find the famous southern continent that he had read stories about but had never been found and seen by an Englishman. Task: Not all of the continents had been discovered when Captain Cook was born. Which continent do you think he was probably looking for? ______
______
During this trip he visited Tahiti (where he watched Venus), the Society Islands, and New Zealand. He drew maps of the two main islands of New Zealand, but also ended up fighting with the local Maori tribe.
Next stop on the journey was the east coast of Australia. Here James and his crew found lots of interesting animals and plants including the kangaroo. Unfortunately, the ship was damaged and they had to stop for a while to do repairs. Many of the crew got a disease from mosquitoes (malaria is the name of the disease) during this stop and over 30 of the crew died. Finally, they returned home in July of 1771, nearly three years after their departure. 20
Captain Cook's second expedition took place from 1772-1775. This time he took two ships, the Adventure and the Resolution. His goal was to either discover the southern continent or prove it didn't exist. He went further south than any other explorer from Europe had been. He also visited a place called Easter Island.
Cook's final expedition lasted from 1776 to 1779. The goal of this journey was to find a north-western route across North America to Asia. He searched the coast of Alaska but could not find what he had hoped. However, he did find the Hawaiian Islands.

In your opinion, what could he have done to prevent this from happening? ______

Amelia Earhart was an aviator who is best known for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. An aviator is someone who flies planes.
Amelia's first "flight" was when she was just seven years old. With the help of Muriel and her uncle she made a homemade roller coaster. After crashing dramatically she told her sister that it "was just like flying". When Amelia was eleven years old she saw one of the Wright Brothers first airplanes at a State Fair. The Wright brothers built the world’s first engine powered aeroplane which could fly – it only flew for 12 seconds but it did fly! Amelia however, had no interest in flying and did not think much of the plane or the Wright brothers at the time. Amelia lived in America in the 1920s. Before this, women had always needed to stay at home, look after the children and have low skilled jobs. However during the war, in the years before, women had needed to do the jobs usually done by men because the men had gone to fight. The women started to work in factories and on farms. They were doing jobs they had never been able to before.
Task: How does this compare to the jobs women can do today?

It is part of the Himalayas, a huge mountain range in Southern Asia that includes more than 110 huge mountains.
Task: What is special about Mount Everest? Which countries is it near? ______
______
______
______
______
29
Everest is one of the world’s deadliest mountains. The first attempt to climb it was in 1921 by a British expedition, however they were unsuccessful.
Mount Everest has a three-sided pyramid shape, each side is called a face, with ridges where 2 faces join.
The 3 faces are known as: the Southwest Face the East (Kangshung) Face the North Face
The fewest number of people have tried to climb the east face and not very many of those people have been successful. Most successes have been from climbing the southwest face. Mount Everest is often linked with the local people who live in the valley below, known as Sherpa. They are usually farming people who grazed their animals high up in the mountains. They are excellent guides and assistants to those who wish to climb Everest. Being so high, the summit of Everest is extremely cold. Climbers do not only have to prepare for the cold, but also strong winds. There is less oxygen in high places and so many people can get sick because of this. This sickness is called altitude sickness. It can hurt the body and the mind and it is very dangerous.
30
What equipment do mountaineers need? Hilary’s equipment Modern equipment Oxygen tank
Goggles
Gloves
Warm clothing and windproof clothes
Climbing tools
Special shoes and poles called crampons which help with walking
Task: Why do you think so much equipment is needed to climb Mount Everest? ______
______Why do you think Edmund Hillary’s photo in black & white? ______
______
On May 29th 1953, Edmund Hilary and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became the first people to summit Everest.
31
In 1953 the British were told they were allowed to try and climb Mount Everest. The government of Nepal, where Everest is, would only allow one group to try every year and so this was a big deal. The leader of the expedition, John Hunt, asked Hillary to join in the climb. There were over 400 people on the trip. They climbed the mountain in stages, moving to a higher camp every few weeks. At each stage fewer and fewer people would continue to climb.
Once they got to the final camp, there were two teams chosen to climb the last stage to the summit. One team was Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The other team was Tom Bourdillon and Charles Evans. The team of Bourdillon and Evans tried first, but they failed to make it to the top.
Finally Hillary and Tenzing got their chance to try for the summit. They ran into some difficulties, including a 40-foot rock wall that is today called 'Hillary's Step', but they made it to the top. They were the first to climb to the top of the world! Because the air was so thin, they only stayed at the top for a few minutes before returning to tell the world of their achievement.
