Bybee1 Abstract Background: Arthropods have received much attention as a model for studying opsin evolution in invertebrates. Yet, relatively few studies have investigated the diversity of opsin proteins that underlie spectral sensitivity of the visual pigments within the diverse beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera). Previous work has demonstrated that beetles appear to lack the short-wavelength-sensitive (SWS) opsin class that typically confers sensitivity to the “blue” region of the light spectrum. However, this is contrary to established physiological data in a number of Coleoptera. To explore potential adaptations at the molecular level that may compensate for the loss of the SWS opsin, we carried out an exploration of the opsin proteins within a group of beetles (Buprestidae) where short-wave sensitivity has been demonstrated. RNA- seq data were generated to identify opsin proteins from nine taxa comprising six buprestid species (including three male/female pairs) across four subfamilies. Structural analyses of recovered opsins were conducted and compared to opsin sequences in other insects across the main opsin classes—ultraviolet, short-wavelength, and long-wavelength. Results: All nine buprestids were found to express two opsin copies in each of the ultraviolet and long-wavelength classes, contrary to the single copies recovered in all other molecular studies of adult beetle opsin expression. -

At a nest site in Northern Italy of females of the weevil-hunting digger wasp Cerceris arenaria L. (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) the provisioning activity and predator-prey relationship were investigated, in particular their specialization in choice of prey. Females were active from middle of June to end of July, and from 8.00 to 19.00. The wasps made provisioning flights throughout the day, mostly in late morning and early afternoon. Individual wasps generally only hunted for 1 or 2 prey species of all those available, maybe because of their higher abundance. The size of prey, which is positively correlated with that of the female wasps, seems to be the main factor determining choice of prey. The nature of the provisioning flights seems to be related to the size of the prey, being more frequent and shorter for smaller weevils. The correlation between prey and wasp biomass is discussed in relation to the size range of the wasps. INTRODUCTION “small” (about 0.7–1.2 mm), “medium” (1.3–1.9 mm) or “large” prey (2.0–2.7 mm). Louisiana WaspWatcher Program Bio-surveillance for invasive beetles using native wasps The Problem Invasive species arrive in our communities often without any warning, settle in for long destructive stays, and are hard to dislodge. Think of Dutch elm disease, water hyacinth, water lettuce, zebra mussels, and now emerald ash borer. Successful management of any introduced pest depends on early detection... forewarned is forearmed! An initiative to get a jump on this most recent pest is the new ‘WaspWatcher’ program used to spot new infestations of the emerald ash borer beetle before it can establish itself as a serious pest. Emerald Ash Borer The beetles are virtually undetectable ...at least until it is too late. Larvae feed beneath the bark of our native ash trees and only emerge as adults (high in the tree's canopy) during summer. The larval feeding eventually girdles and kills our ash trees. A Solution A native ground-nesting wasp, Cerceris fumipennis (pronounced sir-sir-us fum-a- pen-us), is providing a handy solution to our beetle detection problem. This wasp will prey on the adult emerald ash borers (as well as related native beetles, called buprestids) and carry them, paralyzed, back to its burrow. The paralyzed beetle is then stored underground as food for the wasp's larva. Cerceris with buprestid beetle YOU CAN BE A WASP WATCHER! No. 4 From late August through September, 1975, adults of a species of Anaphes were repeatedly reared from eggs of Parydra sp., probably I? quadrituberculata Loew (Diptera: Ephydridae). Observations were made from eggs collected along a drainage ditch in Portage Co., Ohio. The ephydrid eggs had been deposited on reeds, stones, and other objects which protruded above the mud shores bordering the ditch The eggs were covered with a white to slightly green granulose coating composed of diatoms. The female applied this protective coating by defecating over the eggs following oviposition. The eggs measured approximately 0.84 mm by 0.24 mm and were deposited conterminously in clutches of 1 to 15, with 4 to 5 being the mean clutch size. -
Pinyon Pine Mortality Alters Communities of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods

Cobb2, Paulette L. Ford4, and Sandra L. Brantley5 ABSTRACT.—We documented the effect of drought-induced mortality of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm.) on com- munities of ground-dwelling arthropods. Tree mortality alters microhabitats utilized by ground-dwelling arthropods by increasing solar radiation, dead woody debris, and understory vegetation. Our major objectives were to determine (1) whether there were changes in community composition, species richness, and abundance of ground-dwelling arthro- pods associated with pinyon mortality and (2) whether specific habitat characteristics and microhabitats accounted for these changes. We predicted shifts in community composition and increases in arthropod diversity and abundance due to the presumed increased complexity of microhabitats from both standing dead and fallen dead trees. We found signifi- cant differences in arthropod community composition between high and low pinyon mortality environments, despite no differences in arthropod abundance or richness. Overall, 22% (51 taxa) of the arthropod community were identified as being indicators of either high or low mortality. Our study corroborates other research indicating that arthropods are responsive to even moderate disturbance events leading to changes in the environment. These arthropod responses can be explained in part due to the increase in woody debris and reduced canopy cover created by tree mortality. Nelson, Kansas City Abstract: The genus Dicerca, in the tribe Buprestini, is placed nearest the ge- nera Poecilonota and Tracbykele based on larval and adult morphology. The external morphology of 8500 specimens including the genitalia of the males, the geographical distribution, and host plant data reveals 27 valid species which are arranged in 7 groups. Twenty-one new synonymies are listed, D. frosti Nelson is reduced to a subspecies of D. callosa Casey, D. cajonensis Knüll is elevated to spe- cific Standing and the subspecies D. tenebrosa knulli is described as new. Figures of all species not previously well illustrated are given and a key to the species and sub- species is included. Introduction The North American species of Dicerca have been in a confused taxono- mic State for many years. The last revision was by T. L. Casey (1909) and included 46 new species and subspecies names, mostly based on minor struc- tural variations. This and confusion about the Status of some earlier descri- bed species have made it increasingly difficult to assign names with any con- fidence. Several species are secondary invaders of trees commonly used for lumber, shade, or fruit so are considered of some economic importance.
