Dear Parent/Guardian

NEWSLETTER 7/17

Last week we celebrated International Women's Day. It is an annual event that commemorates women's rights. The theme for 2017 is asking us to #BeBoldForChange. We are challenged to help forge a better working environment that includes a more gender inclusive world.

This is an important challenge to all our parents to help drive greater change for women (and our daughters) in the work place so that we can move closer to gender equality.

STAFF MATTERS

We would like to express our condolences with Mrs Katherine Myburgh, whose father-in-law passed away recently. May God comfort her and her family in this difficult time.

ACADEMICS

International Computer Programming Olympiad When Ralph McDougall reached the finals of the 2014 South African Computer Programming Olympiad (SACPO) in Grade 8, we knew that it was the beginning of great things to come. Ralph continued his success story during the 2015 SACPO, when he once again reached the finals, and was also selected as the non-travelling reserve for the international team. 2016 was no different – Ralph reached the finals and achieved a joint fourth place and bronze medal as Grade 10 learner.

He then continued to attend a number of weekend practice camps. The purpose of these camps was to prepare the participants for possible participation in the International Olympiad in Informatics taking place in July and August 2017 in Tehran, Iran. Four deserving participants would be selected from these camps to represent South Africa at the prestigious event.

We are proud to announce that Ralph has been selected to represent South Africa at the 29th International Olympiad in Informatics in Iran. He is the youngest member of the team of four; the other three participants are first year students at UCT. A remarkable achievement!

SPORT

Tennis The annual CR van der Merwe Tennis Tournament took place recently. The following schools participated: , High School, Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl Boys’ High School, Paarl Girls’ High School, Bloemhof High School and Cradock High School. Our teams fared well against these schools and both the boys’ and the girls’ teams came fourth. Kyler Hugo received the award for the player with the best sportsmanship.

Athletics During the Western Province meeting two of our learners competed. Their results were as follows: Rudzi Ramukhubathi won both the 100m and the 200m final for u/16 girls. Leah Jones came second in the 100m final and fourth in the 200m final. Both girls were chosen for the WP Team and will compete at the Western Cape Championships held from 17 March at the Dal Josafat Stadium in Paarl.

Chess Dantelle Joubert was named the 2016 WP Sports Woman of the Year. This is a phenomenal achievement. We are fortunate to have a chess player like Dantelle in our school. Joubert Visagie participated in the WP Open Tournament earlier this month where he was the best player in the B-section. We are extremely proud of these chess players.

Cricket Our u/14 team played against the Bellville High School team for the WPNS cricket final. We batted first and scored 128 (all out) in 34.1 overs. Bellville High school batted second and were all out for 99 runs. The best batsman of the match was Yazeed Arendse with 20 runs. The best bowlers of the match were Kenoé Christians (4 wickets for 22 runs after 4.4 overs), Tiaan Visagie (3 wickets for 22 runs after 8 overs) and Taahir Fredericks (2 wickets for 19 runs after 7 overs). Our team won by 29 runs and became the league champions of 2017 in their age group. A great end to the season!

Be careful with what you water your dreams. Water them with worry and fear, and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dreams. Water them with optimism and solutions, and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dreams.

Kind regards
