Alpha Wolf JD Vermeulen FROM THE SPORTS DESK SWIMMING CANA Junior Africa Championships Henju Duvenhage (Gr. 10) and Luan Grobbelaar (Gr 9) represented South Africa at the CANA Junior Africa Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Curro Durbanville's very own swimming coach, Coach Warren Deyzel, was selected as coach of the South African Junior Swimming Team. Henju was elected as captain of the RSA Team. South African Senior Nationals in KZN Curro Durbanville Swimming Team competed in the South African Senior Nationals in KZN. Luan Grobbelaar achieved GOLD in the 200m Individual Medley in a FINA Junior World Championships qualification time of 2:06.00 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games in Nassau, Bahamas (18-23 July 2017) Luan Grobbelaar won GOLD in the boys' 200m Breaststroke. 6th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships Luan Grobbelaar represented SA at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in the USA (Indianapolis) from 23 to 28 July. TENNIS CR van der Merwe Tennis Tournament The annual CR van der Merwe Tennis Tournament took place in the second term. The following schools participated: Stellenberg High School, Stellenbosch High School, Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl Boys’ High School, Paarl Girls’ High School, Bloemhof High School and Cradock High School. Our teams fared well against these schools and both the boys’ and the girls’ teams came fourth. Kyler Hugo (Gr. 8) received the award for the player with the best sportsmanship. Western Cape Disas (traditionally WP) Marno Stander (under 19), Kyler Hugo (under 19) and Daniela Davidyan (under 19) were selected for Western Cape Disa (traditionally WP) Tennis team. They received A-team and provincial colours. GOLF WP Golf for 3 Curro learners! Ayden Senger, Keyan Loubser and Gheran Hattingh were selected to represent Western Province u17 in a triangular golf tournament against Southern Cape and Boland at the Kingswood Golf Estate from 26 – 28 May. Jordan Rothman makes headline news Jordan Rothman (Gr. 9) achieved wonderful press coverage during her participation in the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Championship where she beat pro-player, Kajal Mistry! CROSS COUNTRY Northern Zone Representation Nadine Visser (Gr. 8) and Tayla Visser (Gr. 12) were selected to represent the Northern Zone cross-country team. HOCKEY WP Curro Hockey Anke Botha (Gr. 8) was selected to the under 14 Western Province Northern hockey team. She travelled to Bloemfontein in June and participated in the Inter-Provincial Tournament. Western Cape Team Representation Kenoe Christians (Gr. 8) was selected for the under 14 Western Cape team and travelled to Durban in the July school holidays where he participated in the Winter Games as part of the under 14 Western Cape team. WP IPT Representation Ethan Lombard (Gr. 11) was selected to the under 18 WP B-team. NETBALL WP Inter-District tournament Rudzani Ramukhubathi (Gr. 8) and Morgan van Greunen (Gr. 9) participated their first Western Province Netball Inter-District Tournament on 20-22 July, at Huguenot High School in Wellington. Seven districts attended the tournament. Each Western Province age group had three different teams: Disas, Dolphins and Doves. Rudzani was in the Doves under 14 Team. Her team won the tournament for her age group. Morgan van Greunen was in the Disas under 15 Team which finished 4th in their age group. CRICKET WP CRICKET Selection Taahir Fredericks (Gr. 8) and Khutsi Shabangu (Gr. 9) were selected to represent Western Province. CHESS Northern Suburbs Top Schools Play-offs Our Chess Team participated in the Northern Suburbs Top Schools Play-offs. Our under 18 team won all their games and progressed to the Western Cape Play-offs. Our under 15 team finished 4th. SA Schools Winter Games A few of our chess players participated in the SA Schools Winter Games in Durban. They battled it out against some of the best chess players from all 9 provinces. Luan de Jager won the under 18 section; Ethan Samuels came third. Dantelle Joubert came 2nd in the u18 girls section. Dantelle also received her senior SA colours and finished joint fourth in the African Zonal Senior Event. She received joint first position at the SA Top Schools Championship and was named the best girl at the Nelson Mandela Blitz Tournament. WP Top Schools Curro Durbanville's under 18 and under 13 chess players are once again the Western Province Top Schools winners. RUGBY 2017 has been the best rugby season in the history of our school. Our under 15's played 15 matches and only lost one. Our under 19 A-team also played 15 matches of which 11 were won, 4 lost and 1 was drawn. Four under 15 boys (Dean Rautenbach, Khutsi Shabangu and Brendan Nagel) were selected to the Northern Region Team and are currently involved in a talent identification program for Western Province. CURRO NATIONALS 2017 CURRO NATIONALS 2017 The end of the second term saw learners from all over South Africa travel to Cape Town to participate in the annual Curro National Winter Sports Tournament. Players battled it out on the netball court, rugby field, soccer field and hockey AstroTurf. Curro schools were divided into the Disas, Gemsbokke, Wildebeeste, Jacarandas and Boababs. Soccer was introduced for the first time in 5-a-side soccer format. INTERSCHOOLS 2017 INTERSCHOOLS 2017 VS CURRO LANGEBAAN The annual winter sports interschools against Curro Langebaan is a highlight on our calendar. We travelled to Curro Langebaan who were the hosts of the event this year. This is the first year that Curro Durbanville had most team wins. MASIBAMBANE PARTNERSHIP "TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER" AT THE START OF TERM 2, CURRO DURBANVILLE HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS HOSTED A MEET-AND-GREET EVENT IN THEIR STAFFROOM FOR THE EDUCATORS OF MASIBAMBANE SECONDARY SCHOOL. A WONDERFUL AND SOCIABLE TIME WAS HAD BY ALL AS THE EDUCATORS FROM BOTH SCHOOLS TOOK THE TIME TO African History Workshop ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER FOR THE BUSY TERM AHEAD. A group of 30 Masibambane learners took part in a History workshop for Grade 12 learners at IN TERM 3 MASIBAMBANE EDUCATORS our school. This event was hosted by Gill RETURNED THE GESTURE AND HOSTED A Sutton, author and expert on African History. WORKSHOP FOR CURRO EDUCATORS IN She presented a portion of history to the THEIR SCHOOL HALL. learners in a fun and interactive manner. The mutually beneficial relationship that is being established between these two schools is an initiative to share knowledge, skills and ideas. MASIBAMBANE PARTNERSHIP "UNITING LEADERS IN THE CLASS" LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP WITH MASIBAMBANE LEARNERS SEVERAL LEARNERS FROM MASIBAMBANE SECONDARY SCHOOL SPENT TIME AT CURRO DURBANVILLE HIGH SCHOOL IN TERM 2 FOR AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP. CHANGING YOUR ENVIRONMENT The Masibambane Class Captains attended an assembly and participated in an interactive workshop with Curro's senior learners later that same day. The workshop was hosted by Mr Dylan Wray of Shikaya, a non-profit civil society organisation, and consisted of fun and interactive activities that encouraged the learners from both schools to work together in discussions and come up with ideas on how they could make a difference in their environments. After the workshop, the Masibambane learners accompanied the Curro learners to their different subject classes until lunchtime. SPECIAL ASSEMBLY WORKERS' Curro Durbanville held a special assembly just before Worker’s Day, where they welcomed a guest speaker, Mr Dylan Wray, as well as Curro Durbanville's maintenance staff. Mr DAY Wray addressed the assembly on the historical importance of Workers’ Day and Freedom Day. The campus was formally introduced to the maintenance staff – each by name - and encouraged to thank them personally for the hard work that they do. MR & MISS CURRO AND THE WINNERS ARE... Together with the Kay Mason Foundation, our learners purchased special stickers and/or shoelaces for Tekkie Tax Day. The funds raised went towards providing scholarships to financially disadvantaged children in order for them to attend good schools and get a quality education. The Curro learners could also choose to support Animals and/or Disability causes within the Tekkie Tax initiative. Our learners supported this initiative wholeheartedly by wearing special stickers and shoelaces on Tekkie Tax Day.
