2 Houghton Mifflin Company H IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS WITH WALTER LORRAINE

His contribution to the publishing of children’s literature greatly exceeds the pictorial and design quality and the originality of the publications for which he is responsible. Walter Lorraine has displayed a remarkable consistency in his pursuit of the original, the unlikely and the genuine. He has successfully pre- served an atmosphere of joy, enthusiasm and idiosyncrasy ideal for the develop- ment of fresh talent.

“Good children’s literature lets kids test reality safely, and gain maturity” Walter has said. “It opens up other perspectives and points of view and fires imagina- tions. I can’t think of a more rewarding activity than helping authors do that.”

We congratulate Walter on fifty-five wonderful years at Houghton Mifflin and his role in firing the imaginations of children of all ages everywhere.

Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good old- fashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one. However, it is an unquestionably ruthless act that sets in motion the transformations that lead to their salvation and to happy endings for not only the four children, but their nanny, an abandoned baby, a candy magnate, and his long-lost son too. Replete with a tongue-in-cheek glossary and bibliography, this hilarious and decidedly old-fashioned parody pays playful homage to classic works of children’s literature.

Lois Lowry talks about the inspiration for The Willoughbys:

“I grew up on classic children’s literature, including fairy tales, so it has always MORE BOOKS BY permeated my consciousness. Somehow I was reminded of Hansel and Gretel, and LOIS LOWRY: the fact that their parents dropped them off in the woods intending that they die of starvation. Couldn’t do that in a book for kids today! I thought. Then chuckling, I thought: why not? And so I created the Willoughby parents, who go off on a lengthy vacation and then send the children a postcard saying, in essence: By the way, the house is for sale. When someone buys it, you will have to find another place to live. Leave your clothes; we might be able to sell them. Big and Bad MORE BOOKS BY ETIENNE DELESSERT: Etienne Delessert

A wolf, Big and Bad, is on the loose, bounding across the hills and gobbling up every creature in his path. As he grows taller than the midnight moon, the other animals begin to worry that soon the planet will be too small for his increasing appetite. Beavers try to drown him in their pond, crows pelt him with walnuts, and moles dig an underground pit—to no avail. Alone, they are helpless against the mighty wolf, Alert! until a pair of wily cats comes up with a plan . . . 978-0-618-73474-0 Etienne Delessert reimagines the classic tale of $17.00 CL “The Three Pigs” by turning the tables on the marauding wolf as the animals join together to set a trap to stop his ravenous rampage. But just because they don’t see what the bear sees doesn’t make it a bad picture, right? Daniel Pinkwater turns art (and art critics) upside down in this classic tale, now beautifully reillustrated by D. B. Johnson.

Daniel Pinkwater is the author of about a hundred books, and he feels that bears, like all artists, should be encouraged rather than criticized. When he is not writing, Daniel Pinkwater can be found on National Public Radio’s airwaves, where he is a popular commentator and children’s book reviewer. He lives with his wife, the illus- trator and novelist Jill Pinkwater, and several dogs and cats in a very old farmhouse in New York’s Hudson River Valley.

D. B. JOHNSON WRITES ABOUT ILLUSTRATING BEAR’S PICTURE:

Q Why did you illustrate this book? What interested you in the material? I was very interested in illustrating Bear’s Picture because everything in this story revolves around the pictures. A How the bear paints his picture is the most important element of the book—something every picture book illustrator longs for. How could I resist? Q Bear’s Picture was originally published in 1972 with illustrations by Daniel Pinkwater. Did you see the original before starting your artwork? Did you speak with Daniel about your ideas before beginning? A I had never seen the book. I wanted to approach the story from my own perspective with what I hoped might be a fresh viewpoint, so I chose not to look at the original edition. At the same time I did want to be faithful to Daniel’s story, so I proposed that we meet and throw around some ideas. But Daniel was very gracious and would have none of it. He was willing to let me take it wherever I wanted. And for that I’m very grateful. It gave me tremendous freedom to put my vision on his story. Did you communicate with Daniel during the process of working on the book, or did you Q communicate through your editor? A This was my first picture book collaboration with someone I wasn’t married to, so it did seem a bit strange to not work everything out with the author first. But I didn’t talk to Daniel. I also didn’t tell our editor the full extent of how I would illustrate the book until after I completed the actual painting of the bear’s picture and knew my idea would work. Then I did all the other sketches for each spread. I printed the sketches along with the color painting showing each step in the bear’s painting process and bound it as a dummy slightly smaller than the final book would be. I sent the book dummy to our editor and she sent it on to Daniel. I was very relieved when they both loved what I had done with the story and gave me the go-ahead to complete all the artwork.

A ride on the train is exciting. There’s always something new to see, even if you’ve been there before. But some train rides are better than others . . .

What if a train took you somewhere else entirely? What if the doors opened in a strange, new place? This is one train stop you won’t want to miss!

20 Houghton Mifflin Company FROM A CALDECOTT HONOR WINNER!

As a girl, Barbara Lehman lived very close to a train station. Along with the other kids in her neighborhood, she loved to race outside and count the cars on the freight and passenger trains when they went by. She also liked to read the names on freight cars and wave to conductors—if she was lucky, they would blow the train whistles for her! She later worked for the NYC Transit Authority, making books about using the subways to get to school. She never lost her interest in trains, especially in the special places they might go, including to her home in Philmont, New York.

24 Houghton Mifflin Company H IN THE WILD!

Robin Page and Steve Jenkins live in Boulder, Colorado, with their three chil- dren. Robin grew up on a farm, where she played and worked with her four sib- lings. Steve has a younger brother. Like a wild turkey, he has been a friend for life. Sisters and Brothers is the fifth book they have worked on together, and here they write about creating the book:

“As we researched the book, we were struck by the variety of ways ani- mals relate to their brothers and sisters—caring for them, learning Steve Jenkins and Robin Page with them, sometimes eating them—and by how often the animals reminded us of our own families. We also realized that, in con- trast to the dozens of growing-up and animal-child-and-par- ent books available, we couldn’t find a single nonfiction book that focused on the relationships of animals with their siblings. We decided to try to fill that void, and Sisters & Brothers is the result.”

To write her own story and then create the illustrations is a dream come true for Melissa. Here, she writes about her new book and her love for all dogs.

“I’m crazy for dogs, like Tupelo and the Boneheads. They are benevolent creatures by nature who are so honest and guileless. I can’t imagine life without them. I feel particularly passionate about shelter dogs. My family recently adopted a new dog from New Orleans, a sheltie named Nelle who looks like a wee Lassie. She’s been so much fun and our other dog, Rufus, is smitten, as we all are. We weren’t in the market for a new dog, but it was serendipity when she showed up in our life as I was finishing this book. She’s the gift I got for finishing, I think.”

46 Houghton Mifflin Company H REALLY WANTS A DOG!

Charise Mericle Harper lives near New York City. She has written and illustrated many books for young readers, including two other books about Grace.

Mom and Dad said that it takes much more than making a list to prove that you are responsible and dependable. Then they told me all the kinds of things that dog owners have to do. I knew about most of them already except the part about having to clip the dog’s toenails. It sounded kind of gross and hard to do, but I pretended I already knew all about it. Of course Dad also talked about having to pick up the poop. Nobody likes that part, but I bet if I wore rubber gloves and didn’t breathe through my nose I could do it. It’s the only really yucky thing about having a dog. Then, while my brain was still thinking about everything, Dad said, “Maybe we can talk about it again when you are older.” He always says this when I ask about something fun that he doesn’t want me to have. When I’m older I’m going to be so busy with all the fun things I don’t get to do now that I won’t even have time to do my homework, and it will be all his fault!

“Grace is a funny, mischievous protagonist who should easily find a place in the pantheon of precocious third graders. Fans of Amber Brown, Clementine, and Judy Moody will love her.”— School Library Journal

Many years ago, the storytellers say, the great King Arthur brought justice to England with the help of his gallant Knights of the Round Table. Of these worthy knights, there was never one so fearless, so chivalrous, so honor- able, so . . . shiny, as the dashing Sir Lancelot, who was quite good at defending the helpless and protecting the weak, just as long as he’d had his afternoon nap. Behold the very exciting and very funny adventures of Lancelot the Great, as only the acclaimed Arthurian author Gerald Morris can tell them.

Gerald Morris loves to visit the world of knights and chivalry in his books, but he’d rather not live there. He’s much happier living in the twenty-first century in Wausau, Wisconsin, where he and his family can regularly have things like hot showers and frozen custard. In addition, Wisconsin has very few recreant knights.

Aaron Renier grew up in Bay, Wisconsin, went to art school in Milwaukee, and now lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his dog, Beluga. He has been drawing as long as he can remember. This is his first book with Houghton Mifflin.

The Mysterious Universe Supernovae, Dark Energy, and Black Holes Text by Ellen Jackson Photographs and illustrations by Nic Bishop

The universe is rapidly expanding. Of that much scientists are certain. But how fast? And with what implications for life on earth? Ellen Jackson and Nic Bishop follow Dr. Alex Fillippenko and his High-Z Supernova Search Team to Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii, where they will study space phenomena with the eight-story Keck telescope. They look for supernovae, dying stars that explode with the power of billions of hydrogen bombs. They find black holes, great gaps where time and space do not exist. And they study the effects of dark energy, the mysterious force that scientists believe is pushing the universe apart, causing its constant and accelerating expansion.

Ellen Jackson is the author of more than forty books for children. She lives in Santa Barbara, California.

The award-winning photographer Nic Bishop is known for his stop-action wildlife photographs. He lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Enjoyed among all ages, birding is an especially popular family-friendly activity. Each of the two hundred species has a full page devoted to it, which is chock-full of information and includes a Wow! burst with a particularly interesting fact. Each page includes a space to check off the bird and write in the date it was seen. Color photos are used for identification purposes, and black and white line drawings illustrate interesting behaviors or characteristics. A birder since childhood, Bill Thompson would have loved a book like this one when he was just getting inter- ested in birds. Now a father of two, he spent many hours over the course of two years with his now eleven-year-old daughter’s class getting the kids’ advice on what to include in the book.

58 Houghton Mifflin Company H A NEW VOICE FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Claire Dean writes from a bright green house behind an ever-growing garden in Idaho. She was inspired to write Girlwood for her daughter, who asked for a story about good stuff. “When I asked her what that meant, she said, ‘You know, about hope and magic and fairies and girls.’ Good stuff, indeed.” Next up is a story for the author’s son. To learn more about Girlwood and to find out what color aura you have, visit Claire Dean at www.clairedean.net.

Polly crouched down and tried to follow her grandmother through the thin gap between plant and earth, but within seconds the leaves closed in around her. Something tugged at her scalp, and Polly realized her hair had snagged on the spiny leaves. She wasn’t trapped, she told herself; she’d crawled into a gleaming green cocoon. She couldn’t move a hand to free her hair, so she took a chance and lunged forward, leaving a few curls like earrings on the lobes of the leaves. Scalp stinging, she had just room enough to squirm forward on the ground, caterpillar-like. A few more feet and she had to blink to adjust to the oddly bright sky. At the end of the tunnel, Polly slowly got to her feet. In front of her stood her grandmother, surround- ed by a grove of giant, glowing larches. Even without their auras, the larches were dazzling in their fall colors—every needle like a dagger of spun gold. The tree beside Baba was easily 200 feet high, yet its most spectacular feature was what most people didn’t see: a white, pulsing light around it in the shape of wings—thousands of them fluttering along the trunk and branches—as if the larch could lift off into the sky at any moment. “What is this place?” Polly asked.

CATHERINE GILBERT MURDOCK TALKS ABOUT THE CREATION OF PRINCESS BEN:

Q How did the idea for this book originate?

A “The original story came to me in a dream—a dream of a girl on a broomstick fleeing an evil queen by plunging out of a castle window into the night. I woke up thinking, “Wow!” The story took over my existence, and I wrote the first draft in sixteen days. The book has changed since then, particularly the first three chapters and the last quarter, but the meat of the story remains what I came up with two years ago.”

Q Why did you write this book? What interested you in the material?

“I’ve always loved fairy tales, and writers’ endless reworking of fairy tales. The tweaking reveals A what really matters in the story, and how our interpretations alter. I also place a lot of value in the process of maturing—that’s what so many of these stories are all about, after all, and I wanted to explore the meaning of that, particularly from a female perspective. When Opal receives the horrifying news that Marianne is dead, she suddenly must live her life and make decisions based on the needs of one person instead of two. “I want yesterday.” That’s all seventeen-year-old Maud can say when she gets the news about her sister: Lucy’s dead, killed in a bomb blast. Without even a body to bury, Maud is left with only questions: How? Why? Maud’s search for answers leads her down the same path her sister took. But all she finds are empty words and more questions. Jeff struggles down a separate but parallel path. His brother, a Marine, has been called up to Vietnam. To the world, Jeff looks the part of a conservative preppy, but inside, he questions the war. But does questioning the war mean he doesn’t support his brother? It’s 1969, and life in America has become an angry jumble of patriotism and rebel- lion, cynicism and hope. Jeff and Maud are caught up in the confusion. All they want is stability. What they get is each other. Hopefully, it’ll be enough.

Theodosia Throckmorton has her hands full at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities in London. Her father may be head curator, but it is Theo—and only Theo—who is able to see all the black magic and ancient curses that still cling to the artifacts in the museum. Sneaking behind her father’s back, Theo uses old, nearly forgotten Egyptian magic to remove the curses and protect her father and the rest of the museum employees from the ancient, sinister forces that lurk in the museum’s dark hallways.

R. L. LaFevers (Robin Lorraine when she’s in really big trouble) has been fascinat- ed by libraries and museums ever since she first set foot in one. When she’s not gaz- ing longingly at ancient artifacts or wallowing in old forgotten texts, she’s busy try- ing to keep one step ahead of her two teenage sons. She lives with the aforementioned sons, her husband, and a demonic cat in Southern California. 82 Houghton Mifflin Company H Paperback

How can you tell if a river’s under a spell? River trolls, rock trolls, blue-wing fairies— the usual suspects. The stretch of the Mississippi where Claire lives has rumors of them all, not that she’s ever spotted any. But then Claire’s cousin Duke takes a swim and sprouts a horn—a long, pointy, handsome thing. After that, Claire doesn’t have much choice but to believe that something rivery is going on, especially since she’s the only one who can help Duke lose his new addition.

Joseph Helgerson lives in Minneapolis with his wife, daughter, and son. His next book is The Western Adventures of Zebulon Crabtree, coming in Fall 2008.

The Slopes of War A Novel of Gettysburg N. A.Perez

“A compelling and demanding novel.”—Booklist

“Through skillful selection of details, fidelity to the historical record, and calculated shifts in perspective, the author has created an intensely moving account that becomes a commentary on the tragic consequences of war.”—Horn Book

Buck Summerhill is a young soldier from West Virginia. He faces the horrors of the battle of Gettysburg knowing that his two cousins, Custis and Mason, may be fight- ing against him in the Army of Northern Virginia. The Slopes of War is a fast-paced, panoramic story of a family divided in loyalty but equally affected by the dangers and sometimes senseless brutality of battle.

N. A. Perez was born in Haileybury, Ontario, Canada. The idea for The Slopes of War took shape after a family visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Touched by the terrible and significant battle that had been fought there, the author felt that although much had been written about the event itself, little had ever captured what was going on in the hearts and minds of the residents when the war rumbled to their doorsteps in July 1863. 86 Houghton Mifflin Company H Paperback

“Intricate and informative.”—VOYA

“Unique . . . a well-written novel.”— School Library Journal

Eleven-year-old Joe Hanada likes playing basketball with his best friend, Ray, writing plays and stories, and thinking about the upcoming Christmas holiday. But his world falls apart when Japanese planes bomb Pearl Harbor. His country goes to war. The FBI takes his father away. And neighbors and friends in his hometown near Seattle begin to suspect Joe, his family, and all Japanese Americans of spying for the enemy. When the government orders people of Japanese heritage living on the West Coast to move to internment camps, including Joe and his family, Joe turns to the journal his father gave him to record his thoughts and feelings.

Da vid Patneaude was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, but has spent most of his life in and around Seattle, Washington, where parts of Thin Wood Walls t ake place. What should children read? As preeminent children’s literature authority Leonard S. Marcus shows incisively, that’s the three-hundred-year-old question that created a rambunctious children’s book publishing scene in colonial times. And it’s the urgent issue that went on to fuel the transformation of twentieth-century children’s book publishing from a genteel backwater to big business. Marcus delivers a provocative look at the fierce turf wars fought among the pioneering editors, progressive educators, and librarians—most of them women— throughout the twentieth century. From The New England Primer to The Cat in the Hat to Cormier’s The Chocolate War, Marcus offers a richly informed, witty analysis of the pivotal books that transformed children’s book publishing, and brings alive the revealing synergy between books like these and the national mood of their times.

Leonard S. Marcus is the children’s book world’s most respected historian and critic. His many books include Margaret Wise Brown and Dear Genius. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times Book Review, Washington Post Book World, Parenting magazine, The Horn Book, and Publishers Weekly. Houghton Mifflin Company 89 Adult Nonfiction

Just after her eleventh birthday, Susan Richards Shreve was sent to the sanitarium at Warm Springs, Georgia, the polio haven famously founded by FDR. During Shreve’s two-year stay, the Salk vaccine would be discovered, ensuring that she would be among the last Americans to have suffered childhood polio. Her account of her time there is vividly, endearingly, candidly evoked. At Warm Springs, Shreve found herself in a community of similarly afflicted children—and for the first time, one of the gang. Away from her fiercely protective mother, she became a feisty troublemaker and an outspoken ringleader. In this spirited memoir, Shreve recaptures the joy and agony of awakening to one’s potential.

Susan Richards Shreve has published thirteen novels, most recently AStudent of Living Things. She has received several grants for fiction writing, including a Guggenheim fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts award. Shreve lives in Washington, D.C.
