THE GUARDIAN Questions & answers Do you enjoy shopping? Where is your preferred shopping destination? Are prices rising in Cambodia?

San Sophal, 59, noodle seller near Back Touk School “Going shopping is something I have to do for my business. I always go to O Russei Market because it has all kinds of goods. I’ve never had enough free time to take my family shopping for fun. Some prices are higher than before but many are still the same. We earn much less money now because people seem to be spending less than before.” Lara Hawke, 33, Australian grain buyer “I don’t really like shopping as I’m not patient enough. I just go in and out for the things I really need, which we call a ‘quick shop’. While in Phnom Penh, I plan to go to the Russian market for souvenirs, clothes, and pictures. Many tourists come here because it is cheap, so I think if the prices get higher fewer people will come.”

Shira Ohayo, 23, Israeli teacher “I don’t plan to do any shopping here because there is no space in my rucksack. I enjoy shopping because it is nice to get new things and throw your old stuff away. If the prices go up a bit, it will still be OK because the locals need to earn money and tourists will still be able to afford it. I think I pay more than locals for buses, food, for everything really, but I don’t mind.” Chhum Chan Pisey, 17, high school graduate “Most of the time, I like shopping at O Russei or Olympic Market because they sell things at fair prices. When I can’t spend my time shopping, I just stay at home doing housework or reading. I think if foreigners get good deals in Cambodia, they will enjoy it and recommend it to their friends, which will help our tourism industry tremendously.”

Meas Puthna, 20, student “Boeung Keng Kong market is my favourite shopping destination. I think it is cheaper than the other markets for bags, clothes, and food. The starting price which vendors ask for is also lower there. I really enjoy shopping, especially for clothes and sometimes go to Sorya market for window shopping with my friends.”

David Bay, 27, English teacher “I got some souvenirs from Siem Reap which are much cheaper. I think we should pay more than locals in Cambodia because we earn more money in my country. I don’t enjoy shopping very much but my girlfriend does so I need to go with her.” 5 September 4 -10, 2009 7DAYS THE PHNOM PENH POST HEALTH & BEAUTY New report highlights link between cancer and mobiles

Julie was raised in Paris to a Khmer-Chinese father and a French mother; food had always been a big part of the family, with uncles and aunts owning a large Chinese restaurant in the city. Julie’s father loved to cook both French and Chinese cuisine, feeding guests and family at every available oppor- tunity. However, he was somewhat of a purist and there was never any attempt at combining the two into one dish; he did not subscribe to fusion – and neither does his daughter. By her mid-teens Julie knew she wanted to open her own restaurant and explore her love of fine food. “To me, eating food can be a very emotional experience”, she told me. Julie’s father dearly missed his homeland and would con- stantly tell her stories of life in Cambodia. While Cambodia was still closed to tourists, he began taking the young family on regular trips to Asia, finally being able to bring them to visit his homeland in 2002. THE MOBILE MARKET IN CAMBODIA There are nine mobile phone service providers in Cambodia. MobiTel/ Cellcard, from CAMGSM, is the most widely used network and has transmitters in all major towns, although other companies offer cheaper rates. You’re supposed to have a local ID to purchase a SIM card, but getting a local – your tuk-tuk driver, say – to do this for you shouldn’t present too many problems. Usage is often by pre-paid phone card, available in values from $2 to $100 (you’ll see outlets displaying the various providers’ logos). Call rates are around $0.20 per minute within the same mobile network number or out to a local landline. Mobile phones can be rented in the arrivals hall at Pochentong International Airport for around $28 per week – but buying is probably a better option. Phone companies typically localise their prices to the market, meaning that some real savings can be made on the newest models.
