THE HEAMAN FAMILY OF FRITHELSTOCK 1500 - 1700 I have used the same spelling of the name throughout this listing and the family tree but you will see from the register entries that various spellings are used ie Heamane,HeYffian,HaYffianetc, but I hope that Heaman simplifies things. I have also stuck to the old form of calender dates. WILLIAM HEAMAN -------------- He appears in the subsidy roll of 1525 and, I believe is the father of John and Richard Heaman,of whom more later. There was a baptism of a William in 1559 but no parents were shown. It is fairly certain that he was the son of John Heaman and so would have been a grandson of the elder William. This would tend to indicate that he was the father of John. If that is so then he would have been born in the 1490's. He may well have died in the plague that hit Frithelstock in 1538. JOHN AND RICHARD HEAMAN ----------------------------------------------- Both of these appear in the subsidy roll of 1544 and the Muster roll of 1569 where Richard was a pikeman and John an archer. John was baptising children at Frithelstock in the 1550 I sand 60's but I think that Richard did have children. There was a John paying taxes in 1581 and who later married Joan Rendy at Shebbear in 1585,and I believe that he was a son of Richard. John and Richard were both dead before 1571 (the burial registers only start then) as neither appear after that date. There were two widows buried, one, Willmott in 1584 and Elizabeth in 1592. These are, I am sure the wives of John and Richard.John had a daughter called Elizabeth (buried 1582) and so it is likely that Elizabeth was John's wife and Willmot was married to Richard. 1 THOMAS HEAMAN ------------- The baptism registers start in 1556 and as there is no baptism for Thomas I have assumed that he was born before this date.Another assumation is that he was the son of John.He named his eldest son John in 1586 but did not name any of his sons Richard/even though he had a broth~r of that name. Thomas married Margaret Brayleigh in 1586 and/as I said/named his eldest son John/born that same year. Thomas and Margaret had five children altogether. John/about whom later.Jaccot 1589/Henry 1592 to 1592 ,Johan 1593 and Roger 1599.Apart from Henry whose burial is known the only other child about whom anything is known is Roger. He married Margaret Allyn in 1624 and appears in the protestation oath for Langtree in 1641. Thomas died in 1634 and Margaret/who outlived him was paying taxes in 1642 so presumably he left her comfortably off. She died in 1646. JOHN HEAMAN ----------- Born in 1586/the eldest child of Thomas and Margaret Heaman. He is mentioned in the protestation oath of 1641/ the tax returns for 1642 and the hearth tax returns of 1674.He died aged 89 in 1675. He does not appear to have married in Frithelstock but it is assumed that he married prior to 1618 as that seems to be when his eldest child was baptised. From the burial registers and a document of 1653 we know that his wife was called Mary/and that she died in 1664. There were at least four children/ John 1618/ Johan 1622/ another John 1623/although there is doubt about this one as we shall see later under Christopher Heaman. The last child was Charity born 1626. The farm known as 'Hollomoor' appears to have been owned by John Heaman as he is shown as of 'Hollomoor I in the tax returns of 1642. 'Hollomoor' went to John's son/Christopher/which is surprising as it is believed that he was a younger son. 2 CHRISTOPHER HEAMAN ------------------ There is some doubt as to when, and if,Christopher was baptised. It is certain that he was the son of John and Mary. He named his eldest son John and his brother named his second son Christopher.John the elder owned 'Hollomoor' which came down in turn to Christopher and then his grandsons, Thomas and John Whitlock. There were two John's baptised at Frithelstock, one in 1618 and one in 1623. Now in 1638, a John married Alice Abbot which would have made the elder John 19 or 20 and the younger one 14 or 15.There is no record of the elder John dying before the birth of the younger one which leaves us two alternatives; a) There were two sons both named John. This is not as daft as it sounds as there was a Whitlock family in Alwington that had two sons both called John who lived to maturity. b) The recorded baptism of the second John is an error and should, perhaps have read Christopher. It was usual for the parish clerk to enter all entries in a rough day book and for the register proper to be completed at a later date,ie the end of the year. This could, and very often did result in many errors such as the fathers name being put down twice,ie John son of John instead of, lets say, Christopher son of John. The only problem with this is if Christopher was the younger son then why did he inherit 'Hollomoor'instead of the elder John? The answer could be that there was more land in the family that went to John. Christopher appeared in the protestation oath of 1641 and so would have to have been aged 18 or over. He did not, however, appear in the tax returns for the following year.He was probably still living at home at Muffery working for his father. In 1643 he married Katherin Crocker at Frithelstock. There were five children, Mary 1644,John 1646,Christopher 1648,Katherin 1651 and Faith 1652. Katherin Crocker died in 1656 and Christopher remarried the following year to Rose Whitlock, a widow from Langtree. It is believed that she was the widow of Thomas Whitlock who died at Langtree in 1643. As yet I do not know when Rose died and at first I thought that Christopher had gone to live at Langtree but he was paying the poor rate in Frithelstock, at least during the 1660' s,but more research is needed in these records. In 1663 he was one of the overseers of the parish. There was a Christopher Heaman in the Langtree ratepayers roll of 1679 but this may have been Christopher junior, who does appear to have lived at Langtree, being Church warden in 1697 and was buried there in 1719. Christopher senior on the other hand did pay a church tax in 1684 for a tent on Hollomoor and he was one of the commissioners at that time. He died in 1688 and was buried at Frithelstock on 18 August. 3 After his death some land that he held tenure on by right of his wife, Rose was transferred to Samuel Netherway. HOLLOMOOR/HOLLAMORE The Heaman family rented land at Hollomoor from at least 1642 when John Heaman sen is shown as paying taxes on it,but I do not believe that there was a dwelling on it as John sen appears to have lived at Muffery (Muffworthy). At some later date the piece of land would appear to have been purchased, probably by Christopher. It was, in fact a third of a tenement, the remainder being owned by John Hockin. This could have been the same man that married Luce Heaman in 1639 which could have made him a relation of John sen. Hockin purchased his part of Hollomoor from John Rolle of Stevenstone in 1653. The document is held in the North Devon Record office and the summary is as follows; Sale by John Rolle of Stevenstone to John Hockin,Yeoman of Frithelstock of; the 9th part of one messuage and tenement, orchard, garden and coutilage (then in the tenacy of John Heaman snr,of Frithelstock) being in the village of Hollomoor,Frithelstock. Sale price 25 pounds. On lease granted by Denys Rolle (then deceased) to John Heaman for 99 years or the lives of himself,Mary his wife and Christ• -opher and John, their sons. Rent issuing 1/6d. Hollomoor then appears to have descended to Christopher and then to his son, Christopher jnr. When he died in 1719 the land went to Thomas Whitlock, the eldest son of Mary,Christopher seniors eldest daughter. In June 1721 he sold it to his brother John for 15 pounds. 4 THE HEAMAN FAMILY OF FRITHELSTOCK --------------------------------- (varients = Heaman/heamane/Haiman/Heyman/Hayman etc) Frithelstock Baptisms. 1556,April 9 Rychard s of John Heyman 1559,July 30 William no parents shown 1562,June 24 Elizabeth d of John Heyman 1568,June 23 John s of John Hayman 1586,March 1 John s of Thomas Heyman 1589,August 21 Jaccot d of Thomas Heyman 1590,February 26 Richard s of Richard Heyman 1592,December 18 Henry s of Thomas Heyman 1593,January 16 Johan d of Thomas Heyman 1599,May 28 Roger s of Thomas Heyman 1618,March 12 John s of John Heyman 1622,June 5 Johan d of John Heyman 1623,October 5 J'Ohn~~C/"": ~), /~." s of John Heyman 1626,September 24 Charity d of John Heyman ye elder 1639,November 3 Luce d of John Heyman 1640,November 4 John s of John Heyman jnr 1642,October 8 Christopher s of John Heaman jnr 1644,October 27 Marie d of Christopher Heamane 1646,February 21 John s of Christopher Heaman 1647,July 23 Thomas s of John Heaman 1648,March 14 Christopher s of Christopher Heaman 1651,April 14 Katherine d of Christoher Heyman 1651,June 23 Johanne d of John Heaman 1653,March 28 Ffaith d of Christopher Heyman (born 13 March 1652/3) 1671,September 27 Alis d of John Heyman 1678,May 2 Anne d of John Hayman - Marriner 1 Frithelstock Marriages 1584,September 21 Michael Glawen to France Heyman 1586,May 3 Thomas HeYman to Margaret Brayleigh 1589,September 5 Rychard HeYman to Mary Moore 1624,February 9 Roger HeYman to Margaret Allyn 1638,January 20 John Heaman to Alice Abbott 1638,January 22 Richard Abbott to Anne Heaman 1639,June 10 John Hockin Wdr to Luce Heaman 1643,December 11 Christopher Heaman to Katherin Crocker 1657,May 20 Christopher HeYman Wdr to Rose Whitlock Wdw of Langtree 1668,January 22 John Heaman to Philipa DeYman 1677,October 20 Edmund Smale to Katherine HeYman 1680,November
