The longest running and most stylish European festival, “Jazz à Juan” has established itself over the decades as a legendary venue, where jazz memories are born but above all where jazz lives on! It all started during the first editions where the revolutionary Charlie Mingus played, bringing with him the baptismal foundations of free jazz, a “Genius” named Ray Charles played his first European concert, Miles Davis created the “event” each time he played, Elle Fitzgerald improvising a memorable duet with a Cicada, John Coltrane giving his mythical interpretation of “Love Supreme” in 1965… Keeping faithful to its traditions embracing the chic, elitist, popular but also eclectic, ever since 1960 “Jazz à Juan” has showcased almost all the jazzmen and all the jazz. All the jazz, does this mean according to some, that it’s not really jazz? Who knows! Cecil Taylor admits “Today one really doesn’t know if jazz is an adjective or a noun…” Jazz in fact is a noun that declines as styles develop which is why it is ever present. Swing, be-bop or post-be bop, gospel or roots, soul, funk or rock, African, European or American, contemporary or “New Orleans”, black or white…no one really knows and it’s better that way! Except for the “vinyl” jazz freaks, jazz fans full of certitudes and other jazz maniacs mad on boxes and labels! Jazz, reggae, Africa, Brazil. Labels are forever appearing and the public changing. Younger than ever, informed, curious, concerned. For them, it’s the true essence of the popularity of a music style that has never been refuted…jazz… the jazz that la Pinède Gould has offered over the last 50 years has found eternal youth through its many different expressions, freeing itself from the shackles in which some people want to keep it – a total aberration – a music that strives from a deep desire for freedom and diversity. Since its birth, jazz is new, therefore pluralist. A wonderful adventure of which Antibes Juan-les-Pins remains the privileged witness. And Juan today? If the festival is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2010, many jazzmen who have played there have not yet reached this milestone: Jamie Cullum, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Avishai Cohen, Kyle Eastwood, Manu Katché, Melody Gardot… Once again this year, with the one and only, young and prestigious “Master Of Ceremonies” Marcus Miller, you can be sure that “Jazz à Juan” will be full of great surprises. The family album continues to fill its pages. To use Jean Cocteau’s words, if the light of jazz was a long time coming, it continues to shine under the stars and the lights of la Pinède Gould. For 50 years and for many more! After the perpetual question “What about after the jazz?” the reply is obvious: “More jazz of course!”.
