Médiathèque François Mitterrand Décembre 2010 1 Histoire des Négro-spirituals Les origines L'origine des Negro Spirituals remonte au temps de l'esclavage. Ces chants, empreints d'espoir et de ferveur religieuse, expriment tout le drame des populations africaines déracinées et vendues pour travailler dans les plantations du sud des Etats-Unis. Le Gospel est une création plus récente née dans les communautés noires américaines des grandes villes du Nord. Tout a commencé en 1619, lorsqu'un navire hollandais débarqua sur les côtes de Virginie les premiers esclaves africains. On trouva que ces hommes s'adaptaient bien au climat et qu'ils pouvaient être d'un excellent profit pour l'économie locale. Aussi d'autres navires négriers suivirent et, année après année, pendant plus de deux siècles, des centaines de milliers d'êtres humains furent arrachés à leur sol natal et transportés, dans des conditions effroyables, vers les rives américaines. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, August 5, 2012 Further Information See Contact on Page Two Doo-Wop DJ Lee, “Mister Lee” Jolles Dies; Philadelphia Businessman, Record Collector and Rock-and-Roll Group Harmony Expert Was Known Across U.S. From His Weekend Radio Show PHILADELPHIA -- Businessman, DJ, and doo-wop group harmony champion Lee, “Mister Lee” Bain Jolles, 66, died July 10th. A lifelong lover of the distinctly American rock-and-roll genre, Jolles owned a well-known Philadelphia cheesesteak eatery; headed the Philadelphia Group Harmony Association (PGHA) and produced sell-out oldies shows for the association for two decades. In 1986 he became DJ, “Mister Lee,” at a small Delaware Valley non-profit FM radio station whose weekend doo-wop listenership exploded coast to coast thanks to Internet streaming. Jolles’s funeral drew a “sellout” crowd of more than 500 persons, mourners who knew him from entertainment, radio, business, and listening to his 4-to-6 p.m. Saturday program on WRDV FM (streamed at WRDV.org) and the Live 365.com “Station PGHA” channel. Those Live 365 shows were recorded from his FM show and can still be heard today. Growing up in the golden age of rock n’ roll and group harmony, Jolles remembered being a nine-year-old elementary school student when Frankie Lymon’s, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” was first released. “…it seemed that the whole school yard was on fire! I knew I found our own music,” according to autobiographical “liner notes” on the Live 365 PGHA channel. Jolles attended West Philadelphia’s John Bartram High, whose alumni include doo-wop luminaries Lee Andrews and the Hearts, Danny and the Juniors, Patti LaBelle, the Superiors, the Blendtones and Little Billy and the Essentials, and, according to Wikipedia, Solomon Burke. -

Frink, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) is frequently referred to as not only a great visionary in jazz music but as also the father of the jazz avant-garde movement. As such, his work has been a topic of discussion for nearly five decades among jazz theorists, musicians, scholars and aficionados. While this music was once controversial and divisive, it eventually found a wealth of supporters within the artistic community and has been incorporated into the jazz narrative and canon. Coleman’s musical practices found their greatest acceptance among the following generations of improvisers who embraced the message of “free jazz” as a natural evolution in style. -

PAN AFRICAN AGENCY AND THE CULTURAL POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE BLACK CITY: THE CASE OF THE AFRICAN WORLD FESTIVAL IN DETROIT By El-Ra Adair Radney A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree African American and African Studies - Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT PAN AFRICAN AGENCY AND THE CULTURAL POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE BLACK CITY: THE CASE OF THE AFRICAN WORLD FESTIVAL IN DETROIT By El-Ra Adair Radney Pan African Agency and the Cultural Political Economy of the Black City is a dissertation study of Detroit that characterizes the city as a ‘Pan African Metropolis’ within the combined histories of Black Metropolis theory and theories of Pan African cultural nationalism. The dissertation attempts to reconfigure Saint Clair Drake and Horace Cayton’s Jr’s theorization on the Black Metropolis to understand the intersectional dynamics of culture, politics, and economy as they exist in a Pan African value system for the contemporary Black city. Differently from the classic Black Metropolis study, the current study incorporates African heritage celebration as a major Black life axes in the maintenance of the Black city’s identity. Using Detroit as a case study, the study contends that through their sustained allegiance to African/Afrocentric identity, Black Americans have enhanced the Black city through their creation of a distinctive cultural political economy, which manifests in what I refer to throughout the study as a Pan African Metropolis. I argue that the Pan African Metropolis emerged more visibly and solidified itself during Detroit’s Black Arts Movement in the 1970s of my youth (Thompson, 1999). -

Seventeen composers submitted materials, veteran of the competition winners.
