What a gift! It really is all about perspective, isn’t it? My college friends in Illinois send smirk-filled replies when I send them photos of snow or even of rain. But they don’t live here, do they? I was just talking with a dear friend here in Tucson who knows how important these moments are… especially to those of us who spend too much time sitting indoors staring at (or worse, arguing with) a computer screen when we’d rather be outside. Nourse Geological Sciences Department, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California 91768, USA ABSTRACT A 200–500-km-wide belt along the southwestern margin of cratonic North America is pervaded by northwest- and east-trending faults that fl ank basins con- taining thick deposits of locally derived conglomerate and sedimentary breccia. These deposits that crop out mainly in the northern part of mainland Mexico, or southern parts of Arizona and New Mexico are unconformable at their bases, have similar Upper Jurassic and/or Lower Cretaceous stratigraphic ages, and commonly preserve volcanic components in the lower parts of upward-fi ning sections. We argue that these basins share a common structural origin, based on: (1) the presence of faults, locally preserved, that generally defi ne the basin margins, (2) similar basal units comprised of coarse conglomeratic strata derived from adjacent basement, and (3) locally preserved syntectonic relationships to bounding faults. Fault orientations, and our observation that the faults (and their associated basins) extend south to the inferred trace of the Late Jurassic Mojave-Sonora megashear, suggest that the basins formed in response to transtension associated with sinistral movement along the megashear. Northwest-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults that terminate at east-striking normal faults defi ne releasing left steps at which crustal pull-apart structures formed.

The Sky Islands support isolated stands of montane vegetation dominated by pines (Pinus sp.) and oaks (Quercus sp.) that arise from lowland “seas” of desert scrub and grassland (Heald 1993). The Sky Islands region occupies portions of a broad transition zone between the Neartic and Neotropical faunal realms and supports flora and fauna with affinities to the Madrean, Petran (Rocky Mountain), Chihuahuan, Sinaloan, and Sonoran biogeographic provinces. Despite high diversity, little information is available to guide management and conservation planning in the Sky Islands of Mexico because knowledge of plant and animal distribution and ecological factors that drive distribution and diversity are limited (White 1948, Marshall 1957, Lomolino et al. 1989, Flesch 2008). In 2008, the National Park Service sponsored researchers at University of Arizona (UA) and University of Montana (UM) to work in collaboration with Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP) to describe bird communities and bird-habitat relationships throughout the Sky Islands region of northern Mexico.

Flesch Avian Science Center, Division of Biological Sciences, University of Montana, Missoula, Montana Thomas R. Van Devender Sky Island Alliance, Tucson, Arizona Abstract—Pines are important dominants in pine-oak, pine and mixed-conifer forests across the Colorado Plateau, southern Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre Occidental, and in the intervening Sky Islands of the United States-Mexico borderlands. All 17 native species of pines in the Sky Islands region or their adjacent mountain mainlands reach the northern or southern margins of their geographic ranges and most (12) have Madrean vs. Petran affinities. We compiled data on the occurrence and diversity of pines across 31 Sky Islands based on extensive fieldwork that complemented data from museum collections. Lower and smaller mountains supported zero to four species of pines whereas higher ones with greater area and thus larger population sizes supported five to seven species. Diversity of pines increased by 0.34% with each 1% increase in area (km2) of forest in a mountain range with similar effects for maximum elevation (P < 0.001); diversity decreased by 0.70% with each 1% increase in distance (km) to the nearest mainland (P < 0.015). Forest area explained >2 times more variation in pine diversity (R2 = 0.42) than distance from the nearest mainland (R2 = 0.19), suggesting that larger population sizes of pines on bigger mountains reduce rates of stochastic extinctions and that this process is more important than dispersal limitation in driving pine diversity.

But more than a hundred years later, wildlife is still being lost at an alarming rate. Why? Parks—even Yellowstone—are just too small. It is this realization that has led to a revolution in wildlife conservation. CROSSING TO SAFETY Like this highway overpass in Alberta— built for wildlife—keeping connections between wild areas can mean the difference between survival and extinction. BIG, WILD, CONNECTED A PARK HERE AND A POND THERE isn’t enough for many kinds of plants and animals. Over the past two decades, biologists have come to understand that we must have bigger protected areas—and we must connect these big areas—to ensure that wildlife has the room it needs to roam, to find food, to mate, to survive. From the Yukon tundra to the high deserts of Mexico, bears, wolves, native trout, and other wild animals are struggling. The West is being fractured into small slivers. Logging, mining, real estate development, oil and gas drilling are destroying habitat and stranding wildlife in isolated islands of backcountry. That’s why the Wildlands Project’s team of conservation biologists and partner groups have created maps and plans—from the grand scale down to the local level— that link parks, wilderness areas, and other large areas of protected lands through corridors of connected natural habitat—such as wildlife refuges, state parks, national forests, and local land trust holdings.
