BERNESE OBERLAND Outrageously Beautifulithastobeseenbelieved © Lonely Planet Publications 170 Bernese Oberland BERNESE OBERLAND The Bernese Oberland should come with a health warning – caution: may cause trembling in the north face of Eiger, uncontrollable bouts of euphoria at the foot of Jungfrau, 007 delusions at Schilthorn and A-list fever in Gstaad. And it’s highly addictive. Mark Twain wrote that no opiate compared to walking through this landscape (and he should know), but even when sober the electric-green spruce forests, so-big-they’ll-swallow-you-up mountains, surreal china-blue skies, swirling glaciers and turquoise lakes seem the products of hallucination. After an adrenalin fix in Interlaken, the Jungfrau Region beckons. Feel the spray of the wispy Staubbach Falls, savour chocolate-box Mürren, slalom the Lauberhorn and feel hum- bled by the original pearly kings and queens: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Up at Europe’s highest station, Jungfraujoch, husky yapping mingles with Bollywood beats. Yet just paces away, the serpentine Aletsch Glacier flicks out its tongue and you’re surrounded by 4000m turrets and frosty stillness. From Interlaken, head east to Meiringen for Sherlock Holmes eccentricities and meringues, or west for medieval flair at Thun’s turreted castle. Down south you enter wilder territory in Kandersteg, where the dress-code is muddy walking boots. Not so in nearby Gstaad, where Paris Hilton pouts in the paparazzi’s lens and the nouveaux riches flash porcelain smiles whiter than snow. But though photographers might capture celebs at their best, the landscape defeats them. Listen carefully for the tutting of tourists at the postcard carousels trying – and failing – to find something to match their memories. An inevitable side effect, surely, of a place so outrageously beautiful it has to be seen to be believed.     Experience Kandersteg Public footpaths around the village On 28th June 1913 the Lötschberg route was opened connecting Kandersteg with Bern, Brig and Italy. Today Kandersteg is known for its car transport train through the tunnel. Since the opening of the NEAT base tunnel, Kandersteg has used the services of the Regio Express Lötschberg. A special attraction is the steam tank locomotive "Simplon N°1", that was restored in 2010/11 and is on display. Its first assignment as a service railway locomotive on the north ramp Frutigen - Kandersteg was in 1911. Further details and information are available on site. Parallel to the railway building is the Bühl Kandersteg weir, which supplies traction energy to the power plant in Kandergrund by tunnels and pressure lines. Since 1991 the BKW Energie AG no longer delivers any electricity from the renewed system for the BLS. The weir in front of us passes water purified through raking and sedimentation tanks into the 4.2 km long headrace tunnel in the rock, to the water tower above the power plant in Kandergrund. This water tank can hold about 16’000m³ of water. From here two pressure lines lead directly to the power plant's turbines. There are also various bridges that were built in connection with the construction of the railway. Just before the weir, there's a footbridge, which reminds us of this time. This bridge, built in 1908, was preserved and was accepted as an object worthy of protection in the Kandersteg inventory. When the glaciers of the last ice age retreated, the pressure of the rock masses erupted throughout the alpine region and caused some massive rockslides.

Moreover, particularly in the Alpine region, it is specially exposed to natural hazards. Nonetheless, this industry is an important pillar of the Swiss economy, providing employment and generating income. Then, it becomes essential to reduce its vulnerability and starting implementing adaptation measures. In order to do so, it is important to define which areas face which problems and to recognize vulnerability hot spots. This motivation comes from the prospect that the largest environmental, social and economic damages are likely to be concentrated in vulnerable areas. This article presents an overview of the current state of the knowledge on the impacts, the vulnerability and the possible adaptation measures of the tourism industry in relation to climate change. Moreover, it presents different methods that could help assessing this vulnerability, referring in particular to the Swiss situation. This is the first step toward the establishment of the vulnerability analysis and the consequent examination of possible adaptation measures. Insbesondere Frutigen und Kandersteg profitieren nicht mehr von einer Anbindung an das nationale Bahnnetz. Dennoch zeigt die Nachfrageentwicklung der Jahre 2007 bis 2009, dass durch die Ein- führung des Lötschberger die negativen Auswirkungen der Angebotsverschlechterung gemindert werden konnten. Die Wiedereinführung eines IC-Halts in Frutigen würde eine signifikante Verbesserung des öV- Anschlusses für die Region Frutigen/Adelboden bedeuten, ohne dass kurzfristig die Anbindung weiterer Orte im Kandertal wie Reichenbach oder Kandersteg beeinträchtigt wäre. In Verbindung mit dem geplanten Angebotsausbau könnte die Nachfrage um ca. 15 % erhöht werden. Neben der Erhöhung der Nachfrage hätte die Einführung eines IC-Halts aber auch weitere Folgen für das öV- Angebot im Kandertal: Steigender Abgeltungsbedarf für den Lötschberger, da eine Mehrzahl der Fahrgäste aus der Region Frutigen/Adelboden auf den IC umsteigt und somit die Auslastung dieses Angebo- tes sinkt.
