Czech Portraits Friday, Mar. 4 10:30am Vítězslav NovákNovák, Czech composer (1870-1949) Vítězslav Novák held an almost “cult status” popu- larity among his native Czech people. Like his mentor Antonín Dvořák, he used thematic mate- rial from Czech folk melodies in his music and was inspired by the landscape of his native country in South Bohemia. In 1908 he succeeded Dvořák as professor of composition at the Prague Conserva- tory and helped lead the next generation of Czech composers into the new age. Lady Godiva Overture Composed in 1907, duration is 15 minutes This piece was commissioned to open a Czech play of the same name and is taken from a 13th century story about the noble-hearted and beautiful Lady REPERTOIRE Godiva. It tells the story of the Lady’s efforts to end the suffering and oppression of the people in Coventry under her husband’s rule, Count Leofric. After multiple pleas to ask the Count to lower the • NOVÁK taxes, Leofric finally offers her a deal. The piece portrays Cello and Orchestra the characters, Count Leofric and • NOVÁK Lady Godiva through contrasting Eternal Longing Op. 33 melodies. Count Leofric has a very fierce motif in C minor while Lady • SMETANA Godiva is delicately portrayed in Eb Moldau from Má Vlast major. • Review of Heather Clark, the Grief of Influence: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes
Plath Profiles 379 Review of Heather Clark, The Grief of Influence: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. New York: Oxford University Press, 2011. 328 pages, $99. Amanda Golden, Emory University In the past decade, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes scholars have responded to the publication of Plath's Unabridged Journals (2000), the Restored Ariel (2004), and the Ted Hughes collection at Emory University.1 In 2005, Karen V. Kukil and Stephen C. Enniss curated "No Other Appetite": Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, and The Blood Jet of Poetry, a joint exhibition of materials from the Sylvia Plath Collection at Smith College and the Hughes papers and library at Emory held at the Grolier Club in Manhattan.2 The fall of 2010 witnessed The New Statesman's publication of Hughes's "Last Letter," a manuscript from the British Library's Birthday Letters materials.3 While critics may have once considered Plath's and Hughes's oeuvres separately, Heather Clark's The Grief of Influence: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes underscores that they are inextricably linked. In The Grief of Influence, Clark provides insightful new interpretations of the role of Plath and Hughes's rivalry in their development as poets. Clark's study updates Diane Middlebrook's Her Husband: Hughes and Plath, A Marriage (2003) and Clark adopts a version of Harold Bloom's "anxiety of influence" in order to examine ways the ways that Plath and Hughes responded to each other's work.4 Clark's study responds 1 I would like to thank Emory University's Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry whose Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics enabled my completion of this review.

Studio: Fine Arts Building, Chicago. Mr. Ewell, a former pupil of the Art Institute School, J. received practically all of his art training in this insti- tution. He has also made extensive sketching tours of France, Italy, Switzerland, Morocco and the United States. Until the year 1917 Mr. Ewell devoted himself almost exclusively to water colors, participating in exhibitions by The American Water Color Society, The Chicago Artists, The Art Student's League and The American Architectural Society. During the ensuing two years Mr. Ewell has turned his entire attention to studies in design and composition, intro- ducing symbolism extensively. The intelligent use of symbols of the Far East is quite evident in this exhibition of what he sees fit to term, "Compositions in Black and White." These examples of his work-ranging in size from six to eight inches to as many feet-vary from simple self-explana- tory subjects to those having within them the intricate play of symbolism, which demands careful minute study to fully grasp their significance. • Negotiating Femininity As Spectacle Within the Victorian Cultural Sphere
CRACKED MIRRORS AND PETRIFYING VISION: NEGOTIATING FEMININITY AS SPECTACLE WITHIN THE VICTORIAN CULTURAL SPHERE by LUCINDA IRESON A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham November 2013 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT Taking as it basis the longstanding alignment of men with an active, eroticised gaze and women with visual spectacle within Western culture, this thesis demonstrates the prevalence of this model during the Victorian era, adopting an interdisciplinary approach so as to convey the varied means by which the gendering of vision was propagated and encouraged. Chapter One provides an overview of gender and visual politics in the Victorian age, subsequently analysing a selection of texts that highlight this gendered dichotomy of vision. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical and developmental underpinnings of this dichotomy, drawing upon both Freudian and object relations theory. Chapters Three and Four centre on women’s poetic responses to this imbalance, beginning by discussing texts that convey awareness and discontent before moving on to examine more complex portrayals of psychological trauma.

  • Alfred Lord Tennyson the Eartly Poems of Alfred
ALFRED LORD TENNYSON THE EARTLY POEMS OF ALFRED LORD TENNYSON 2008 – All rights reserved Non commercial use permitted THE EARLY POEMS OF ALFRED LORD TENNYSON EDITED WITH A CRITICAL INTRODUCTION. COMMENTARIES AND NOTES, TOGETHER WITH THE VARIOUS READINGS, A TRANSCRIPT OF THE POEMS TEMPORARILY AND FINALLY SUPPRESSED AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY BY JOHN CHURTON COLLINS PREFACE A Critical edition of Tennyson's poems has long been an acknowledged want. He has taken his place among the English Classics, and as a Classic he is, and will be, studied, seriously and minutely, by many thousands of his countrymen, both in the present generation as well as in future ages. As in the works of his more illustrious brethren, so in his trifles will become subjects of curious interest, and assume an importance of which we have no conception now. Here he will engage the attention of the antiquary, there of the social historian. Long after his politics, his ethics, his theology have ceased to be immediately influential, they will be of immense historical significance. A consummate artist and a consummate master of our language, the process by which he achieved results so memorable can never fail to be of interest, and of absorbing interest, to critical students. I must, I fear, claim the indulgence due to one who attempts, for the first time, a critical edition of a text so perplexingly voluminous in variants as Tennyson's. I can only say that I have spared neither time nor labour to be accurate and exhaustive. I have myself collated, or have had collated for me, every edition recorded in the British Museum Catalogue, and where that has been deficient I have had recourse to other public libraries, and to the libraries of private friends.

Two Female Images by A. Tennyson: Biblical Keys and Interpretation Facets (the Pre-Raphaelites, K. Balmont, I. Bunin) Galina Zavgorodnyaya Maxim Gorky Literature Institute, Department of Russian Classic Literature and Slavonic Studies, Tverskoy Boulevard 25, Moscow, 123104, Russia [email protected] Aleksei Zavgorodnii Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Russian as a Foreign Language Department, Yaroslavskoye Shosse 26, Moscow, 129337, Russia [email protected] The article examines two female images by A. Tennyson, the Lady of Shalott and Godiva from the eponymous poems, through the prism of biblical and iconographic allusions. The former (Shalott) alludes to the plot and iconography of The Annunciation, the latter (Godiva)—to the motifs of The Old Testament and The Apocalypse. Picturesque paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites, among which were a number of those related to these Tennyson plots, provide even more reassurance with regard to the significance of biblical plots and iconographic canons in the specified Tennyson’s works. Sufferings, fatalism, sensuousness, antinomicity, picturesqueness—all this made the Tennyson female images magnetic to Russian Modernist writers, the images which were in harmony with the spirit of the turn of the twentieth century. K. Balmont and I. Bunin in their translations of the Tennyson’s poems made their own interpretations of the images of the Lady of Shalott and Godiva, accentuating (and even adding) details and nuances of meanings important for symbolist aesthetics. Highly influential for the development of the European romantic tradition, such authors as Lord Byron,1 Percy Bysshe Shelley, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats have always remained firm favourites in the Russian cultural arena, stimulating the imagination of numerous men of letters and evoking copious responses to their works.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson 1 Alfred, Lord Tennyson The Right Honourable Lord Tennyson FRS 1869 Carbon print by Julia Margaret Cameron Born 6 August 1809 Somersby, Lincolnshire, England United Kingdom Died 6 October 1892 (aged 83) [] Lurgashall, Sussex, England United Kingdom Occupation Poet Laureate Alma mater Cambridge University Spouse(s) Emily Sellwood (m. 1850–w. 1892) Children • Hallam Tennyson (b. 11 August 1852) • Lionel (b. 16 March 1854) Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets.[1] Tennyson excelled at penning short lyrics, such as "Break, Break, Break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, Idle Tears" and "Crossing the Bar". Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, such as Ulysses, although In Memoriam A.H.H. was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and fellow student at Trinity College, Cambridge, who was engaged to Tennyson's sister, but died from a brain haemorrhage before they could marry. Tennyson also wrote some notable blank verse including Idylls of the King, "Ulysses", and "Tithonus". During his career, Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success. A number of phrases from Tennyson's work have become commonplaces of the English language, including "Nature, red in tooth and claw", "'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all", "Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die", "My strength is as the strength of ten, / Because my heart is pure", "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield", "Knowledge comes, but Wisdom lingers", and "The old order changeth, yielding place to new".
