Sounding Nostalgia In Post-World War I Paris Abstract In the years that immediately followed the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Paris was at a turning point in its history: the aftermath of the Great War overlapped with the early stages of what is commonly perceived as a decade of rejuvenation. This transitional period was marked by tension between the preservation (and reconstruction) of a certain prewar heritage and the negation of that heritage through a series of social and cultural innovations. In this dissertation, I examine the intricate role that nostalgia played across various conflicting experiences of sound and music in the cultural institutions and popular media of the city of Paris during that transition to peace, around 1919-1920. I show how artists understood nostalgia as an affective concept and how they employed it as a creative resource that served multiple personal, social, cultural, and national functions. Rather than using the term “nostalgia” as a mere diagnosis of temporal longing, I revert to the capricious definitions of the early twentieth century in order to propose a notion of nostalgia as a set of interconnected forms of longing.

He began piano lessons at the age of seven and continued with the study of harmony, counterpoint, analysis and composition as a teenager with Françoise Gangloff-Levéchin, Christian Manen and Louis Saguer. He then entered the Paris Conservatory where he studied with a number of composers including Claude Ballif, Marius Constant, Serge Nigg, and Michel Philippot. He attended the French Academy in Rome and after returning to Paris, he worked as head of chamber music for Radio France. He has since concentrated on composing. He has composed orchestral, chamber, instrumental, vocal and choral works. His unrecorded Symphonies are: Nos. 1, Op. 11 (1983-4), 2, Op. 22 (1986-8), 3, Op. 33 "Sinfonia da Requiem" (1988-94) and 5 , Op. 55 "Concerto for Orchestra" (1996-7).There is also a Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, Op. 72 (2001) and a Sinfonia Concertante for Orchestra, Op. 83a (1995-96/rév.2006) .     570259bk USA 15/5/07 8:15 pm Page 5 Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1929 as the first professional musical ensemble fulfilling the needs of radio broadcasting in Slovakia. The first conductors already placed particular emphasis on contemporary Slovak music in their programmes, resulting in a close connection with leading Slovak composers, BLOCH including Alexander Moyzes, Eugen SuchoÀ, Ján Cikker and others. The original ensemble was gradually enlarged and from 1942, thanks to Alexander Moyzes, the then Director of Music in Slovak Radio, regular symphony concerts were given, broadcast live by Slovak Radio. From 1943 to 1946 the Yugoslavian Kre‰imír Baranoviã was Four Episodes • Two Poems the chief conductor of the orchestra, to which he made a vital contribution. His successors were ªudovít Rajter, Ladislav Slovák, Václav Jiráãek, Otakar Trhlík, Bystrík ReÏucha and Ondrej Lenárd, whose successful Concertino • Suite Modale performances and recordings from 1977 to 1990 helped the orchestra to establish itself as an internationally known concert ensemble. His successor Róbert Stankovsky continued this work, until his unexpected death at the age of Noam Buchman, Flute • Yuri Gandelsman, Viola 36. Charles Olivieri-Munroe held the position of chief conductor from 2001-2003, with the current principal guest conductor Kirk Trevor. Oliver von Dohnányi was appointed chief conductor of the orchestra in 2006, and regular Soloists of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra live concerts have continued also under the new second conductor Mario Kosik. Through its broadcasts and many recordings the orchestra has also become a part of concert life abroad, with successful tours to Austria, Italy, Slovak Radio Symphony Germany, The Netherlands, France, Bulgaria, Spain, Japan, Great Britain and Malta.

    Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937) : Intermezzo de la 6ème Symphonie PROGRAMME : «Louis Vierne» (1870 - 1937) la biographie écrite par Bernard Gavoty (1943) Louis Vierne (1870 - 1937) - Impromptu, extrait des «Pièces de fantaisie» - Final de la troisième Symphonie Ce concert est consacré essentiellement à la musique française pour orgue, des - Lied 19e et 20e siècles. Comme ailleurs en Europe, le répertoire d’orgue français a été très riche jusqu’au 18e siècle, mais la Révolution provoqua une cassure dans Marcel Dupré (1886 - 1971) : Cortège et litanies cette tradition. Avec des compositeurs-organistes de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, à leur tête César Franck, le répertoire d’orgue français trouve à nouveau ses lettres de noblesse. On parle dès lors de l’école d’orgue française, et beaucoup se passe autour du Conservatoire de Paris, et des grandes tribunes Francis Jacob a étudié l’orgue et le clavecin auprès de S. Ciaravolo, A. Stricker, parisiennes, dotées pour nombre d’entre elles d’orgues du grand facteur de A. Zylberajch, M. Gester (Strasbourg), J. Boyer (Lyon), J.-W. Jansen (Toulouse), l’époque Cavaillé-Coll, et en particulier Notre-Dame de Paris. et J. Christensen (Bâle). En 1929, Bernard Gavoty fit connaissance avec Louis Vierne, alors âgé de 59 Il a remporté plusieurs concours d’orgue (concours A. Guilmant de Boulogne- ans. Gavoty devint son élève et en même temps un de ses plus grands admirateurs sur-Mer, 1987, concours d’orgue international de Brugges, Belgique, 1997…). Il et plus tard aussi, son ami. Louis Vierne était presque aveugle. Vierne était est également titulaire du Certificat d’Aptitude à l’Enseignement de l’Orgue et disciple de César Franck et de Charles-Marie Widor.
