Film/Broadcast Content The increasing role of “tentpoles” in the content industry The need for tentpoles in the content industry Overweight (Maintain) The content industry and a tent have one thing in common: both need a tentpole to support the entire structure. In the content industry, tentpoles are defined as hit titles Industry Report that provide a source of steady cash flow, such as the blockbuster films of movie studios July 27, 2015 and the top-rated programs of TV networks. The content industry is vulnerable to the success or failure of a title as well as changes in seasonality. • The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Keywords: Entertainment; Comparative advantages; Services; Trade in services; Internet; Digital music; Technologies; Intellectual Property Rights; Culture; Koreanness. The way in which individuals are exposed to different genres and types of music helps illustrate the extent to which globalization has had an impact on the world. Before the invention of the internet, music was only available for purchase to consumers who went to record stores and physically purchased goods. Now, countless unique songs and genres are readily available with just a single search. Due to how easily consumers can access new music, digital distribution has completely overtaken the profit from selling physical copies of albums. In 2006, record labels still made $9.4 billion from CD sales in the United States, despite the fact that digital distribution entities, such as Napster and iTunes, provided digital copies of the same songs.

International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 2143–2160 1932–8036/20190005 The Storyteller Who Crosses Boundaries in Korean Reality Television: Transmedia Storytelling in New Journey to the West JU OAK KIM1 Texas A&M International University, USA The Korean reality TV franchise New Journey to the West (NJW) is an illustrative case to unpack how the Korean media industry has offered viewers transmedia and intertextual experiences in the realm of reality television. Korean reality show directors, who have acknowledged their profoundly reshaped, collaborative, and interdependent relationship with consumers in an era of convergence culture, attempt to fragment everyday realities throughout multiple media texts. The current article focuses on Young-seok Na, a television director who created NJW, revamping characters and episodes from his previous works, coalescing Korean television channels and online streaming sites, and integrating a Chinese classic and its Japanese manga adaptation into the Korean reality show franchise. By analyzing the six seasons of NJW and its spin-off series, Kang’s Kitchen and Youth Over Flowers—Winner, this article proposes that the aura of a reality show director as a storyteller is essential in producing a regionally formulated transmedia franchise. Keywords: reality TV, transmedia storytelling, New Journey to the West, television director, storyteller In September 4, 2015, Korea’s cable television provider, tvN, exclusively released its new reality show, New Journey to the West (NJW; Lee & Na, 2015), via the Web broadcast network Naver TVCast and the mobile application, tvNgo.
