I am even more excited, though, by what lies ahead for you, as you enter the world enabled, empowered, and inspired to succeed in whatever endeavors you choose to pursue. Today, as you join the proud alumni of UCI, you become part of a family of graduates who are leaders, innovators, and teachers who make a difference in our global community. Please come back and visit us, update us with news on your careers, and stay in touch through the Alumni Association. Wherever the future leads you, you will always be remembered at UCI. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents background of study, research problems, research objectives, significance of the study and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background of the Study Deixis is a theory that has been used to analyze implicit meaning of pronouns in utterances. Commonly, researchers analyze deixis in some literary works such as novel, poetry, and movie script or articles in newspapers, magazine, and many more. This study investigates person deixis which are used by 5 Seconds of Summer‟s Michael Clifford and The Vamps‟ Bradley Simpson on their official twitter accounts. The writer focuses on three problems: person deixis which is mostly used in the data, the reference of the person deixis used, and the similarities and differences of person deixis used from both twitter accounts. According to Meriam-Webster Dictionary, deixis is “the pointing or specifying function of some words (as definite articles and demonstrative pronouns) whose denotation changes from one discourse to another”. (Retrieved from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pragmatics?s=t). In Cognitive Anthropology, Levinson (1995: 10) states “Deixis is an important field studied in pragmatics, semantics and linguistics. Deixis refers to the phenomenon wherein understanding the meaning of certain words and phrases in an 1 digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id 2 utterance requires contextual information. Words or phrases that require contextual information to convey any meaning are deictic”; and furthermore “Deixis concerns the ways in which languages encode…features of the context of utterance…and thus also concerns ways in which the interpretation of utterance/es depends on the analysis of that context of utterance.” (Levinson: 1995).

  • Presidents Message
New York State Retired Teachers’ Assn. DBA Presidents Message This article is being written at the end of June. My wife and I are safe and comfortably living in the North Country of New York State, which opened up to Phase IV yesterday. We now fully realize what a real estate agent means when he/she says “location, location, location”. Yesterday, New York State had less than 1,000 hospitalized COVID patients for the first time since mid-March, 2020. The people of New York State have risen out of a very dire occasion to “flatten and descend the curve” of COVID-19 infections. This effort took courage, common respect from our fellow man, and LEADERSHIP. Kevin Mulligan, Three years ago, at the NYSRTA Convention, I gave a well attended workshop titled - President “Public Education Enemy #1- Governor Andrew Cuomo”. Today, June 2020, I hold an all new respect for Governor Andrew Cuomo. For 100 consecutive days, beginning in mid-March, Governor Cuomo held a news conference that provided much needed factual information, details of how the State was addressing the pandemic, and reassurance that we are “NY Strong”. He shared with us his personal family stories, even named a law protecting the elderly, Matilda’s Law, after his 87 year old mother. We got to know the names of his daughters, and his trials as a single parent in raising them. Andrew Cuomo, in my eyes, depicted himself not as the politician we have all come to know, for better or for worse, but as a human being faced with the daunting task of a pandemic that involved life and death.
