  • Interview with Orson Welles
Orson Welles on THE TRIAL Interviewed on the BBC in 1962 By Huw Wheldon HUW WHELDON: Your film, THE TRIAL, is based upon Franz Kafka's stunning novel. ORSON WELLES: Yes, I suppose you could say that, although you wouldn't necessarily be correct. I've generally tried to be faithful to Kafka's novel in my film but there are a couple of major points in my film that don't correspond when reading the novel. First of all the character of Joseph K. in the film doesn't really deteriorate, certainly doesn't surrender at the end. WHELDON: He certainly does in the book, he's murdered in the book. WELLES: Yes, he is murdered in the end. He's murdered in our film, but because I fear that K may be taken to be a sort of everyman by the audience, I have been bold enough to change the end to the extent that he doesn't surrender. He is murdered as anyone is murdered when they're executed, but where in the book he screams, "like a dog, like a dog you're killing me!," in my version he laughs in their faces because they're unable to kill him. WHELDON: That's a big change. WELLES: Not so big, because in fact, in Kafka they are unable to kill K. When the two out of work tenors are sent away to a field to murder K, they can't really do it. They keep passing the knife back and forth to one another. K refuses to collaborate in his own death in the novel, it's left like that and he dies with a sort of whimper.

  • THE OTHER SIDE of the WIND; a LOST MOTHER, a MAVERICK, ROUGH MAGIC and a MIRROR: a PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE on the CINEMA of ORSON WELLES by Jack Schwartz
Schwartz, J. (2019). The Other Side of the Wind…A psychoanalytic perspective on the cinema of Orson Welles. MindConsiliums, 19(8), 1-25. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND; A LOST MOTHER, A MAVERICK, ROUGH MAGIC AND A MIRROR: A PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE ON THE CINEMA OF ORSON WELLES By Jack Schwartz ABSTRACT Arguably, Orson Welles is considered America’s most artistic and influential filmmaker from the golden era of American movies, even though most people are only familiar with his first feature, Citizen Kane (1941). Any film buff can easily recognize his signature camera work, his use of lighting and overlapping dialogue, along with so many cinematic nuisances that define his artistry. Despite being on the “pantheon” (Sarris, 1969) of American directors, he never established any real sustaining commercial success. Even though he leaves behind many pieces of a giant beautiful cinematic puzzle, Welles will always be considered one of the greats. Prompted by Welles’ posthumously restored last feature The Other Side of the Wind (2018), the time is ripe for a psychoanalytic re-evaluation of Welles’ cinematic oeuvre, linking the artist’s often tumultuous creative journey to the dynamic structure of Welles’ early and later childhood experiences through the frame of his final film. INTRODUCTION From early in its invention, movies have offered the gift of escaping the grind of daily life, even when movies are sometimes about the grind of daily life. Movies move us, confront us, entertain us, break our hearts, help mend our broken hearts, teach us things, give us a place to practice empathy or express anger and point to injustice.

  • 101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers.

  • ORSON WELLES As FALSTAFF in CHIMES at MIDNIGHT
ORSON WELLES AS FALSTAFF IN CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT “ If I wanted to get into heaven on the basis of one movie, that’s the one I would offer up. I think it’s because it is, to me, the least flawed . I succeeded more completely, in my view, with that than with anything else.” —Orson Welles “Chimes at Midnight . may be the greatest Shakespearean film ever made, bar none.” —Vincent Canby, The New York Times “ He has directed a sequence, the Battle of Shrewsbury, which is unlike anything he has ever done, indeed unlike any battle ever done on the screen before. It ranks with the best of Griffith, John Ford, Eisenstein, Kurosawa—that is, with the best ever done.” —Pauline Kael Spain • 1966 • 116 Minutes • Black & White • 1.66:1 Booking Inquiries: Janus Films Press Contact: Ryan Werner [email protected] • 212-756-8761 [email protected] • 917-254-7653 CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT JANUS FILMS SYNOPSIS The crowning achievement of Orson Welles’s later film career,Chimes at Midnight returns to the screen after being unavailable for decades. This brilliantly crafted Shakespeare adaptation was the culmination of Welles’s lifelong obsession with the Bard’s ultimate rapscallion, Sir John Falstaff, the loyal, often soused childhood friend to King Henry IV’s wayward son Prince Hal. Appearing in several plays as a comic supporting figure, Falstaff is here the main event: a robustly funny and ultimately tragic screen antihero played by Welles with towering, lumbering grace. Integrating elements from both Henry IV plays as well as Richard II, Henry V, and The Merry Wives of Windsor, Welles created an unorthodox Shakespeare film that is also a gritty period piece, which he called “a lament .

  • Welles Exploring New Hollywood Production Opportunities: Sex and Nudity in the Other Side of the Wind Massimiliano Studer
Miscellanea – peer-reviewed Cinergie – Il cinema e le altre arti. N.16 (2019) https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.2280-9481/8762 ISSN 2280-9481 Welles Exploring New Hollywood Production Opportunities: Sex and Nudity in The Other Side of the Wind Massimiliano Studer Submitted: December 10, 2018 – Revised version: May 30, 2019; July 24, 2019 Accepted: November 25, 2019 – Published: December 23, 2019 Abstract In November 1968, Jack Valenti, then president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), cre- ated the Rating System so that theater owners could indicate to families which films were suitable for chil- dren. New and talented young producers such as Bert Schneider took great advantage of the new opportu- nities this system offered. Orson Welles, still self-exiled in Europe, himself wanted to take advantage ofthe changed climate in Hollywood. Thanks to the support of his new partner, Oja Kodar, Orson Welles decided that his films would explore sexuality in a more explicit way. Nudity, corporeity, and sex (though already appearing in his previous films) are copiously dealt with in The Other Side of the Wind, whose initial con- ception and realization was largely due to Oja Kodar. One of the film’s most iconic sequences, the “car sex scene”, features well-known Wellesian techniques as applied to the depiction of dominant female sexuality. Keywords: The Other Side of the Wind; Orson Welles; New Hollywood; Rating System; Jack Valenti. Acknowledgements I wish to thank Professor Francesco Pitassio, Professor Joseph McBride and Ray Kelly for their invaluable comments, suggestions and support. I express profound gratitude to Steven North for sharing with me his personal insights and thoughts about the New Hollywood.
