A2 NEWS Issue #4 – October 2020 DG Hans and I visited the Lynn Valley Lions on October 6th, where three new members were inducted. The next District Governor visitation will be on November 2nd with the Mount Seymour Lions via Zoom. I want to thank everyone who participated in the many work parties at Camp Squamish. My apologies go out to Bryan Terrace and Marian Foxall from Ambleside Tiddlycove, in addition to Joyce Crawford from the Deep Cove Lions, whose names didn’t appear under the recognition section in last month’s bulletin. Congratulations to PZC George Sim who was recognized for receiving an International Presidents Medal. Well done, George (we’re proud of you!!). Please see the registration information (later in the bulletin) for our virtual MD19 Convention on November 7th. No travel necessary and a great opportunity to check out a convention at a nominal cost! Sessions of interest for everyone, in addition to special rap sessions for Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and Membership Chairs. The Zoom link to be sent out November 5th, so please register ASAP. Our clubs have now all found a way to engage and reach out to stay in touch with each other. Seymour 17 Deep Cove 31 NV Host 11 Pemberton 32 Squamish 14 151 Camp Squamish Zone Project The weather permitted us to have another work party in October. We applied another coat of stain to two of the decks that were refurbished in September, and finished staining the Pavilion’s facsia board. We were able to repair some downpipes and generally got things wound up in preparation for the end of the season. The recent plans were to do the easier, low cost maintenance items such as power washing, cleaning the lower level gutters, replacing siding and deck boards, restaining the decks, improve lighting, grounds maintenance, miscellaneous painting and cleaning up a large portion of the Salish Lodge kitchen. This was accomplished with great support from Lion members and funding from Easter Seals. Upcoming plans are to clean up a dormitory, and continue with low cost maintenance items plus move to specific projects such as the cottage structural issue, the pool building siding, dealing with higher areas (gutters, siding replacement and painting). Funding will be needed for materials, equipment rental and contractors. AROUND THE ZONE AMBLESIDE TIDDLYCOVE October has been a quiet month for projects as, due to the pandemic, all the community events in which we would normally participate were cancelled. Fortunately thanks to Lion Myrle we have been able to hold our regular meetings in our normal venue. With some creativity, and help from PZC George and Garry, we have enjoyed meals at these meetings. Our most recent meeting featured our infamous Club Auction with its usual variety of weird and wonderful objects on the block. Sadly the Overflow Parking Lot we normally run till Thanksgiving has been closed due to construction. We are optimistic that the work will be completed on time thereby enabling us to reopen by Easter 2021. On a very positive note we are honoured that PZC George Sim was awarded the International President's Gold Medal for his continued service to Lionism. Congratulations George. With Thanksgiving and Halloween behind us we are now gearing up for our Christmas Tree Lot. Restrictions brought on by Covid 19 have dictated a number of changes in our operation. While the majority of our organizational changes are in hand there continue to be a few challenges unresolved. Look for us at Ambleside Park from November 27 to January 3. The Club was again recognized for our 100% contribution to CARE and we are committed to support the Lions Plan 100 to become a Model Club by its completion goal of 2023. As well Ambleside Tiddlycove has once again contributed to the North Shore Salvation Army's food drive and funded two family Sponsorships for Christmas. The members extend their best wishes to ZC Mike for a full and speedy recovery from his recent surgery. MOUNT SEYMOUR Our club is quite quiet with service activities right now, but October seemed to be a month to lend a hand to clubs within our zone. Several of our members assisted with the Deep Cove Lions shredding event on October 3rd and on October 17th we were off to the 1st ever Squamish Lions shredding event, which was held at Camp Squamish. This was a fun event with a number of Zone clubs helping out the Squamish club. A great example of inter club cooperation. The best news is that the event raised over $3,500 all of which will be going to the rehabilitation of Camp Squamish. After a trial run which worked well, we expect to be using Zoom as the platform for the upcoming District Governor's visitation to our club. And, of course, we all wish Zone Chair Mike a full and speedy recovery from his recent heart surgery. NORTH VANCOUVER DEEP COVE First, we all want to wish our Zone Chair a speedy recovery after his surgery. All our thoughts and prayers are with you Mike. October 3rd was our Shredding Event. It went off very well and we were so grateful for all the help we received from Lions from Mount Seymour and Ambleside Clubs. ZC Mike and Sharon and PDG Gordon Graves and Patti Easterling, Lions from Coquitlam dropped by to see how we run this event as they are thinking of doing it for their clubs. We raised $4,840.00 after all expenses were paid. This money has been donated to the Alzheimer’s program at Parkgate Community Centre. We have continued to have social gatherings in the park every Monday during October as the weather has been cooperating. The attendance has been between 8 and 12 Lions per day. We have also formed a phone tree so each Lion will receive a phone call at least once a week to see how each of us are coping with the Pandemic and adapting to how our lives have changed during these difficult times. NORTH VANCOUVER HOST Members are doing their best to stay in touch as much as possible during these unprecedented times. PCC Polly has remained busy as the Global Action Team area leader. Members that missed the Deep Cove shredding event were happy to hear that another one was being held by the Squamish Lions. Lion Hazel jumped into action to help at the Camp Squamish shredding event. With no hesitation she offered to do whatever needed to be done, from picking up balloons, helping to direct traffic and taking the lead in cooking lunch for those in attendance Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion! SQUAMISH The Squamish Lions Club held a very successful paper shredding event on Saturday, October 17TH, raising funds that will go toward expenses to help in refurbishing Camp Squamish to make the premises shipshape in time for next summer’s campers. The campers come from many walks of life and have a variety of diverse abilities. The success of this fundraiser happened as the result of a lot of help: Thank you to our fellow Lions that came up from Mount Seymour, Deep Cove, and the North Vancouver Host Lions. The greatest amount of thanks goes to the community of Squamish and the many people that came with their boxes of papers to be shredded and their good wishes. Many threw a few extra dollars into the pot for the kids that will get to enjoy their camp experience. We plan to hold another shredding event on Saturday, May 9th. Camp Squamish will again be the jewel of camp experiences for children and young adults. It was my great pleasure to help the Squamish Lions with their first Shredding Event. A clear sunny day showcased the camp in all of its splendor, with sunshine highlighting the Camp’s amenities and spectacular surroundings! Shredders could see immediately how their money would be spent! The traffic flow was easily controlled, and signage was excellent. The highlight of the day was the whooping and cheering from everyone when they realized how successful the day had been! I was impressed with Sharon’s Covid precautions.
