DISTRICT 19A.BC.CANADA October, 2017 District website: www.district19a.com “THE POWER OF WE”

Greeting from your District Governor Lion Grace

Ahoy fellow lions, lionesses and leos, October is a busy month for our district lions, lionesses and leos! Not only that they have their own clubs’ service projects to work on, they also targeted the recruitment of members under the Membership Growth Month. There was the MD19 Annual Convention being held in Surrey on the 12th to the 14th. Then we had our own 19A Centennial Leo Convention in which the Leos were working so hard to make this Convention a milestone event. With the hard work of the lions, this month 22 members joined our Lions organization with net gain of 5! Our total membership has climbed up to 1,153 from 1,141. with net gain of 12 members. The total hours that were served by lions (excluding leos and lionesses) have been over 10,000! This is incredible and thanks so much for your contributions.

All DGE received gifts from International President at the Convention in July. There was a box with 18 packs of “words of wisdom” that I think it is worth to share with you each month till the end of June.

Vancouver Diamond Lions Club and Lions Clubs International have jointly raised an incredible C$293,460 for the Canadian Cancer Society. With the new cancer screening and diagnostic equipment at the Richmond Hospital Laboratory, residents of Richmond, Delta, South , Powell River and the area of the Vancouver International Airport would benefit substantially. Thank you Vancouver Diamond Lions and the LCIF matching grant!

Page 6 Dear all, with your great support, we have raised C$50,000.00 for the BC Wildfires Relief Fund as at October 31st, 2017!! This is incredible and the funds are still coming. The deadline for us to donate the money to the most affected areas in BC will be at the end of November for their community rebuilding. A motion will be passed by the cabinet officers this month and we will provide you with detail information when everything is finalized. If your club or your members still want to donate money to this account, please do so for we still have three more weeks to go. Community rebuilding is a long term plan and considerable funds are needed. Hopefully by next Spring or Summer, we can visit the affected communities and provide them with our physical support as well.

Report from Sight Awareness Co-Chairperson Lion James Ho, Vancouver Chinatown Lions Club: With DG Grace a group of Lions from various Lions Clubs—Vancouver Chinatown, Galaxy, Deep Cove, Cambie and Vancouver Metropolitan--- visited the Third World Eye Care Society (TWECS ) on Oct 16. TWECS sets up shop at the basement of Burnaby Lougheed Lions Clubhouse. The group was greeted by some Burnaby Lougheed Lions and two representatives from TWECS who gave a detailed description of their operations on how the glasses were collected, calibrated and finally distributed to the needy third world countries. Glasses were first sent to a correction institute in Coquitlam where the residents ( inmates ) record the prescription of each glass using a lensometer and then returned to TWECS. The glasses are then sorted into different categories and boxed, ready for distribution. The TWECS volunteers, including opticians, optometrists, nurses and lay people will then travel at their own expense to deliver all the glasses to the different locations. After individual eye tests the local people will be given glasses with matching prescription. Measurements and focussing were all done on site. The group was also shown a video of TWECS’s recent trip to Lima, Peru. Some of the other places TWECS have gone to include the Philippines, Nicaragua, Mexico, Kenya, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India. The Burnaby Lougheed Lions are also extending an invitation to all Lions to join them in sorting out the glasses every Monday at 7:00 pm at the TWECS warehouse located at the basement of their clubhouse at 7420 Mulberry Place, Burnaby. Arrangements for glasses pick up or delivery can be made by calling Third World Eye Care Society at 604-874-2733. Their address is 2453 Commercial Dr., Vancouver, BC, V5N 4B8.

LCI has a legacy budget of approx. USD1,000 for our MD19 to be shared by each District. At this time, only District H has proposed for a Legacy Project to be done by the Leos according to MD19 Leo Liaison Chairperson. If our District is going to work on one, the Leo Clubs from 19A have to think of a project that all the Leos in our District will do it together and share the grant. Criteria of the Legacy Project will be sent out to the Leo Clubs Presidents and Leo Advisors soon. Stay tuned!

Vancouver Chinatown Lioness Congratulations to supported Leukemia and Burnaby Moscrop Leo Lymphoma 5th anniversary Club for the Club walkathon and raised over Excellence Award $8,000.00 this year. Thank you 2016-2017 presented Lioness for your contributions ! by LCI!

Page 9 Dear fellow lions, just a friendly reminder of the following:

 When you are interviewed by the social media no matter it is on air or in front of TV screen, your title has to be accurately published without confusing the public. No matter you are PAST Council Chairperson, PAST District Governor, PAST Zone Chairperson or PAST President, please let the media know to add “PAST” in front of your title or the year you had such title (in English or in Chinese). Otherwise, you are in breach of “MISREPRESENTATION”.

 Please double check the title of the lion dignitaries before your final printing of program book and other publications. It would be misleading if a “Past Zone Secretary” became “Past Zone Chairperson”.. It makes a real difference. Ask someone to proof read or have your Guiding Lion to help you out. Lions Clubs International has a positive image because it has constitution and bylaws, trademark policy, privacy policy to regulate Lions, Lionesses and Leos’ daily operations. It also has legal department to ensure that we are not mishandling public money. Lions Clubs are not social clubs and this is the reason that we are proud to be a lion, lioness or leo. We have the obligation to maintain the highest standard we can when we took the OATH during our induction ceremony to abide to the Lions Code of Ethics and the Lions Clubs International Purposes. Be a responsible Lion, Lioness and Leo.  Page 22 - Leo Liaison Chairperson PP Raymond Wong’s email address should be: [email protected]
