  • THE SHARED INFLUENCES and CHARACTERISTICS of JAZZ FUSION and PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014
COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Though many examples of crossing over are identified, the examples used do not necessitate the creation of a new genre label, nor do they demonstrate the need for both genres to be combined into one. iii Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Part One: The Emergence of Jazz………………………………………………………….. 3 Part Two: The Emergence of Progressive………………………………………………….. 10 Part Three: Musical Crossings Between Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock…………….... 16 Part Four: Conclusion, Genre Boundaries and Commonalities……………………………. 40 Bibliography……………………………………………………………………………….

Brixworth and District Newsletter Learn, laugh, live Registered Charity No 1178196 Issue 74 June 2021 PROGRESSIVE ROCK MUSIC SUPPLEMENT Helpful hint: Once the ‘YouTube’ video appears, once you have clicked on the links below, and after skipping the adverts, you may or may not know, that you can click on the 4-cornered square icon (usually bottom right of the screen on the tool bar, along with the /volume/stop/start/pause/ icons) which will fill the whole screen. You can then use the ‘esc’ button on your keypad to come back out. PROG ROCK (PR) started in the mid-1960s, and followed the anti-war flower-power era of free love. Probably the best- known track from that time, and most likely will be for years to come, is ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ by KING CRIMSON. However, prior to that brilliant piece of work, the movement started with the likes of THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN and his ‘Fire’, and the 3-piece band THE NICE, fronted by keyboard player extraordinaire Keith Emerson, who later formed EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER. Greg Lake was originally with King Crimson and Carl Palmer played the drums with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Emerson, Lake & Palmer was the first of the super groups, preceded by British prog rock maestros YES and GENSIS, and later, many others. As a new genre, it was never really accepted in the USA, and I wonder if that had anything to with Keith Emerson who, with The Nice, produced the electrifying track ‘America’, during the playing of which, he stabbed knives into the Hammond Organ, and set fire to the Stars & Stripes flag, a regular event at his concerts, one of which I was present at in Bath in 1968.

Print Version Page 1 of 2 Print Page Permutations of Yes By Tom Von Malder (Created: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 11:09 PM EDT) Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe: An Evening of Yes Music Plus (Voiceprint DVD, 143 min.). Consisting of four-fifths of the classic lineup of Yes in the Seventies (only Chris Squire is missing), this quartet, put together by Jon Anderson, recorded an eponymous album in 1989 and then embarked on a worldwide tour. This generous-length show was captured on the American leg of the tour. It opens with brief solo sets by vocalist Anderson (“Time and a Word,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart”), who enters the auditorium from the rear and sings while walking down the aisle to the stage; guitarist Steve Howe (a couple of acoustic instrumentals) and keyboardist Rick Wakeman (“Catherine Parr,” “Merlin the Magician”), before the whole group launches into Yes’ classic “Long Distance Runaround” at the 24-minute mark. The song contains a solo by drummer Bill Bruford. Then comes “Birthright” from their one album (“Teakbois,” the bouncy rocker “Brother of Mine” and “Themes” also are covered from the disc). The wonderful central core is a trio of Yes songs: “And You and I,” “I’ve Seen All Good People” and a 19- minute “Close to the Edge.” The show ends with “Roundabout,” then an encore of “Starship Troop” after the credits roll. Grade A- Rick Wakeman: The Other Side of Rick Wakeman (MVD Visual DVD, 112 min.). This unusual release finds progressive rock keyboardist Wakeman on stage in a small club, with just a microphone and a grand piano.

  • Ray Wilson Ua Zu „

  • Be Careful What You Wish For
Careful/Kruh 1 CHAPTER 1. Warm-ups To understand Jonathan Bailey and his obsession, we have to go back to Boston’s old West End, a teeming neighborhood of Italians, Poles, Jews, Albanians, Lithuanians, African-Americans, and pretty much anyone else the rest of the city didn’t want. They were as diverse a group of people as have ever been crammed into one tiny plot of land, with nary a white collar in the bunch. Tough as nails and loaded with strong opinions on everything from taxes to the Holy Ghost, but on this day it was a sure bet that everyone was in agreement on one thing: with Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and a host of other stars, the Red Sox were sure to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh and final game of the World Series. “Dad, there’s no sound!” It was about six in the afternoon on October 15, 1946, and Theodore Bailey of 29 Joy Street had his head and hands inside an old, wooden console radio. The urgency in his son Alexander’s voice was clear. “Don’t you think I know that?” came the agitated, muffled response from behind the speaker. “But the game, dad, the game.” Careful/Kruh 2 “Son, I’m trying as hard as I can to fix it,” Theodore said tenderly as he poked his head out from behind the console. “But I can’t make any promises.” Alexander tried to mask his frustration, but what nine-year-old has that capacity? His father smiled sadly.
