9 2013 Featured Car: The

In 1961, Lee Iacocca, Vice President and General Manager of Ford, had a vision. His vision was a car that would four people, have bucket , a floor mounted shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weigh less than 2500 pounds, and sell for less than $2500.00. Out of this vision, the Ford Mustang was born.

Three years later, March 9, 1964 the first Mustang rolled off of the assembly line. In order to keep production costs down, many of the Mustang’s components were borrowed from the Falcon, including most of the drivetrain. With a multitude of different interior, exterior, and drivetrain options, the Mustang would be able to be ordered as plain, or as fancy, as economical, or as fast, as the buyer wanted.

In general, the Mustang was designed for everyone and was advertised as “the car to be designed by you”.

The Ford Mustang was heavily advertised during the latter part of it’s develop- ment. On April 16, 1964, the day before it’s release, Ford ran simultaneous com- mercials at 9:30 p.m. on all three major television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS. The following day, April 17, 1964, people “attacked” the Ford showrooms. Everyone was in a frenzy to be one of the first to own the Mustang. 22,000 Mustangs sold the first day! By the end of the year, 263,434 had been sold. By it’s first anniversary, Ford had sold 418,812 Mustangs.

10 the mustang is, of course, one of ford’s classic and most well-known vehicles.

The Mustang had made a name for itself, and was here to stay.

To this day, the Ford Mustang remains one of the highest-selling sports cars in the world.

Was the Ford Mustang named after a horse? John Najjar, the original designer of the Mustang I Prototype, is said to have named the vehicle after the legendary P-51 Mustang fighter plane from World War II. Although this is the “official” story, many people believe the Mustang was named after the horse. In fact, Lee Iacocca is said to have stated this several times while discussing the vehicle in interviews.

Owner: Gene Barnhouse 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible 289-V8 4bbl “D” code 4 speed . Power steering, power brakes, power top. 86,000 original miles Has entered 4 mustang shows. Won: judges choice, best of show, and twice best classic convertible. one of the mustangs in our 2013 collection was recently featured in the mustang times magazine. thanks to gene barnhouse for allowing us to share the story behind this beautiful mustang.

Most men only get to experience their son’s first car once in their lives. It is a right of passage and pride that only a father can appreciate. But my father got to experience it twice, with the same son and the same car, nearly fifty years apart. And how many sons carry the memory of their father driving them to pick up their first car twice, same father and the same car? I might be the only man in the world that can say that.

My father had two driving-age teenagers and another one on deck. I had just finished my freshman year in college, and sharing the with a brother and soon a sister was cramping my social life as well as my father’s. So he suggested a deal that summer: If I earned half the price of a car he would contribute the other half. That sounded fair to me, so I attacked my job that summer with new enthusiasm. Like always the summer of 1967 in El Paso was long and hot, but I had a job and a goal, and by late August I was ready.

One Friday evening I saw that my father had circled some used car ads in the newspaper, and the one that really caught my eye was the Mustang convertible. I called the telephone number but was told the car was sold, but then the voice on the line added, “If he shows up before five o’clock.” That was my opening, so my father and I jumped in his car and headed for Fort Bliss, the local army base, and found a young man in a parking lot sitting in a beautiful Mustang convertible.

It was love at first sight. With those long lines, shiny bronze body, and topless, it was something a soon-to-be college sophomore could only fantasize about. It was a few minutes before five o’clock and the young lieutenant from Maryland was getting nervous. He was leaving for Viet Nam the next morning and he wanted to see his girlfriend. With his permission I drove it around the barracks, and when I returned it was five o’clock. I offered him $50 more than his asking price, he hesitated, looked at his watch, and took the deal.

12 As I drove off with my father following me, I couldn’t have known the pride that my father was feeling, nor could I have known that I had just begun a love affair that would last a lifetime. After all I was just a kid, and I was driving a 1964 1/2 , 289 V8 four barrel, power steering, power brakes, four speed Mustang with a power convertible top that I had just met but was already in love with. Neither my father nor I could predict what was going to happen a half a century later.

When my father called our insurance man the next day and told him his seventeen year old son had bought a Mustang convertible the agent said: “Let me guess, 289 four barrel?”, “Yes”, “Four speed?” “Yes”, “Congratulations, you just bought the most expensive policy I sell.”

College years with my Mustang were wonderful, the car and I were inseparable. Eventually those endless carefree days turned into a degree, my first real job and a young family in Wyoming. The car that had been so prominent in my life soon lost favor to a Bronco better suited to snow and ice than a convertible. One year I came very close to accepting an offer for it but just couldn’t part with my first car. Eight winters later I returned to the southwest to start a business, but the long hours and endless weeks didn’t allow for attention to a hobby car. A more practical person would have sold it to make room, but it soon became a garage fixture that I hardly noticed, eventually became a storage rack for boxes, and finally took up residence outside under a tarp. It wasn’t hurting anything, and after all, it was my first car and I was going to ‘fix it up’ next year.

As the days became years, and the years became decades, next year never seemed to come. I finally built my dream home and my car regained garage status. I began to tinker on it. It ran well, but old age had taken its toll. I still drove it but she didn’t turn heads anymore. She was turning ‘gray’, her body was showing age, and there were lines 13 in places that hadn’t been there before. I spent time buffing the paint, shining the seat covers, and even stained the carpet black. My wife and I would take it for cruises, but like a baby camel it was something only a mother could love, but I was going to ‘fix it up’ next year. Finally the much deserved “kick in the stomach” was delivered unknowingly by my nine year old granddaughter. One day we were looking at the car in the garage. She opened the door and got behind the steering wheel pretending to drive. I told her, “Next summer when you come back to visit I’ll have it fixed up and take you for a ride in it”, to which she replied very innocently, “I know, that‘s what you said last summer”. Ouch.

My wonderful wife finally insisted that I make the car something we could all be proud to ride in, and I wisely did not argue with her. After many months of research I chose a body shop. Some suggested I paint it red, but had I changed the color it would not have been ‘my car’. While discussing the paint color, the shop owner smartly removed a tail light lens and underneath was the original color I had fallen in love with, untouched and unfaded. The decision was made, and since there was no rust she didn’t need a plastic surgeon, just a personal trainer. Her long awaited rejuvenation would finally begin.

Three months later, with new paint, top, seat covers, and carpet, I received the call: “Your car is ready”. I had been peeking at her progress in stages but hadn’t seen the final product. Without hesitation I picked up the phone and called my father. “Would you take me to pick up my car?”

The ride with my father that day was something that perhaps no one else has ever experienced: A grandfather of three full of the same eager anticipation of a seventeen year old boy, being driven proudly by his eighty nine year old father to pick up his first car. It occurred to me that I am probably the luckiest Mustang owner in the world, and perhaps the luckiest man in the entire world. Nearly a half century later I still have my car, I still have my father, and I will always have the memories. I often wonder what happened to the young Lieutenant from Maryland that left for Viet Nam. My Mustang now turns heads, has won a few trophies, and finally receives the loving care she deserves, but to me it will always be more than just a car.

2 0 1 3 from where do these beasts originate?

Ferrari and Porsche A question often arises at exotic car shows: The and Porsche logos both look very similar in both design and color – but who copied who? The answer might surprise you.

The Italian word scuderia (scuderio “squire” + -eria “place of”) means a horse breeding farm. But - in the 19th century – racing meant that you raced horses and you would need such a farm to maintain your racing stable. Because of that, scuderia also came to mean “racing team” well before the inventions of the automobile and airplane.

During World War I, airplanes were considered cavalry so it was common practice for warbirds of the era to sport horse-themed logos. Count Francesco Baracca was Italy’s premiere fighter pilot in WWI, scoring 34 victories between 1916 and 1918 before being killed in action. The logo of Baracca’s squadron featured a cavallino rampante, a rearing black horse on a cloud-like white background. 36 In 1923, a 25-year-old young man named won an auto race in Ravenna, Italy. After the race he met the Countess Paolina, the mother of Fran- cesco Baracca who suggested that Ferrari use the logo of Baracca’s squadron for his new racing team. Her request had to be partially in jest given the equivalence of the phrases “horse farm” and “racing team” in the Italian language, something like, “Your new scuderia needs a horse as its mascot.”

Whether a joke or not, Ferrari agreed. He redesigned the cavallino’s posture slightly (body more upright, head up, one rear leg off of the ground) and chose a color scheme of black on yellow, the colors on the coat of arms of Modena, Italy, Ferrari’s home town. Green, white and red stripes indicating the national colors of Italy were placed at the top of the logo and the letters “S F” abbreviate “.” The logo was certainly in use by 1929 on company stationery but didn’t appear on a race car until July 1932, when a pair of Ferrari-sponsored Alfa Romeos entered the race in Belgium and finished first and second.

The history of the Porsche logo is much more straightforward. are built in Stuttgart, and the coat of arms of the city of Stuttgart is incorporated into the Porsche logo. Stuttgart became a city in the 13th century as “Stuotgarten” which translates to English as “a horse breeding farm” and to Italian as “scuderia.”

There you have it. These nearly identical logos actually are derived from two completely different reasons that turn out to be exactly the same. by Wallace Bow

Lamborghini The Lamborghini logo was created taking inspiration from Taurus (bull), the zodiac sign of the founder of the company. ’s passion for the bullfighting sport is also reflected in the logo. Most of the Lamborghini car models are named after famous bulls.

The Lamborghini logo depicts coat of arms and demonstrates a gold snorting bull on the front. The bull represents consistency, power and fortitude.

The golden bull with a black background of the Lamborgini logo holds great resemblance to the black horse and yellow background of the Ferrari logo. The resemblance was not merely a coincidence, since Lamborgini has a longstanding enmity with Ferrari.

1950 JAGUAR XK-120 ROADSTER

Owner: Gary Singer An instant sales and racing success since its debut, the XK-120 Roadster has remained an automotive icon to this day, helping to both establish and continue the Jaguar Legend. Named after its ability to exceed 120mph, an unheard of feat at the time, it was the “The World’s Fastest Production Car!” 3.4 litre, six cylinder, dual overhead cam engine with an aluminum head sporting hemispherical combustion chambers - a true “Hemi”; technology previously limited to race cars, and rare, exotic automobiles. The XK-120 OTS (Open Two Seater) was intended as a limited production racing platform to showcase this new engine, originally intended for Jaguars’s first post-war high performance four door sedan, the Mark Vll. Jaguar was overwhelmed with 500 deposits at its debut in 1948 at the London Motor Car Show. The traditional, slow and painstaking method of producing automotive bodies for low volume cars using aluminum sheets, hand-formed over a wooden frame, quickly proved inadequate after the first 187 left hand drive bodies were “hammered out”, and a switch was made to more modern production methods. The vehicle represents the 22nd “steel” car, as opposed to the all wood-framed “alloy” car. When last checked,it was the oldest road-going XK-120 Roadster of its type in the US.

1954 JAGUAR XK-120 OTS

Owner: Bill Lang Appeared in the 2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering. Dressed in a deep, glossy Ebony black with a dark tan leather interior finished with a black Tonneau cover. Upholstered lightweight bucket seats. Custom fitted luggage was made to match the interior. Power auxiliary sources were installed in the car for IPods and other electronics. Superb craftsmanship, fit to perfection, attention to detail and high standards in the restoration process. Spectacular mechanical upgrades.

This figure is based on the factory build cards, which called for a louvered bonnet. This factory produced series was designated the M model by . Cars converted later with Le Mans equipment are referred to “Le Mans” modified cars. They are not properly called 100 M cars as this was the name for just the limited production run of 640 cars. An additional several hundred (about 500) “Le Mans” Conversion Kits were sold to Austin-Healey dealers or car owners for conversion of standard 100 Austin Healey sports cars to “Le Mans” specifications.

68 The History of Concours du Soleil The car owners involved decided to formalize the show and model it after the infamous, “Concours d’Elegance” held in Pebble Beach each year.

1997 Concours du Soleil began as an informal gathering of the New Mexico Viper Club displaying cars at a residence in Albuquerque’s northeast heights. It quickly grew attracting more owners and a bigger audience each year.

2004 A “test-drive”. Organizers staged an informal Concours which proved to be a wonderful weekend. Everyone decided it was a good idea and ventured to plan something on a bigger scale and Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation agreed to be the beneficiary for the following year.

2005-2006 Organized by Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, the first Concours du Soleil was held at its current location in Los Ranchos. It encompassed a Saturday night gala and Sunday public show. Carrie Tingley would organize the show for two years when a conflicting fundraising event would preclude them from participating in 2007. All proceeds were donated to Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation.

2007-2009 The Albuquerque Community Foundation is asked to take over the planning of the event. The Cinco Amigos Fund is established. Each year the weekend mirrored the previous year, a 2-day weekend in Los Ranchos. $100,000 in grants have been awarded through the Foundation The Cinco Amigos Endowment Fund grows to $90,000.

2011 - 2013 Organizers continue to mold the event, trying new ideas. A road rally has been added the Friday evening before the rally and the public show continues on Sunday.
