  • Economy, Magic and the Politics of Religious Change in Pre-Modern
1 Economy, magic and the politics of religious change in pre-modern Scandinavia Hugh Atkinson Department of Scandinavian Studies University College London Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 28th May 2020 I, Hugh Atkinson, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that these sources have been acknowledged in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation undertook to investigate the social and religious dynamic at play in processes of religious conversion within two cultures, the Sámi and the Scandinavian (Norse). More specifically, it examined some particular forces bearing upon this process, forces originating from within the cultures in question, working, it is argued, to dispute, disrupt and thereby counteract the pressures placed upon these indigenous communities by the missionary campaigns each was subjected to. The two spheres of dispute or ambivalence towards the abandonment of indigenous religion and the adoption of the religion of the colonial institution (the Church) which were examined were: economic activity perceived as unsustainable without the 'safety net' of having recourse to appeal to supernatural powers to intervene when the economic affairs of the community suffered crisis; and the inheritance of ancestral tradition. Within the indigenous religious tradition of the Sámi communities selected as comparanda for the purposes of the study, ancestral tradition was embodied, articulated and transmitted by particular supernatural entities, personal guardian spirits. Intervention in economic affairs fell within the remit of these spirits, along with others, which may be characterized as guardian spirits of localities, and guardian spirits of particular groups of game animals (such as wild reindeer, fish).

  • VIII. Conference Reports the National Museum of Denmark 1807–2007
The project fits into studies of the second Iron Age. It takes advantage of the results of preventive excavations made at La Tène in 2003, as well as of overall knowledge gathered during over the last twenty years, as a result of the highway excavations in the Trois-Lacs area. Several PhD theses dedicated to the regional second Iron Age are underway. In collaboration with the Laténium Museum, the European Archaeological Center of Bibracte (Mont Beuvray in Bourgogne) will contribute to an international conference in Neuchâtel, in November 2007. Last but not least, this year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the site. Starting in June 2007, numerous events, exhibitions, etc. will take place in the Museum Schwab (Biel/ Bienne), in the Laténium (Hauterive/Neuchâtel), and in the Swiss National Museum (Zurich). • The Urban Graveyard
THE URBAN GRAVEYARD THE THE URBAN GRAVEYARD THE URBAN GRAVEYARD It is commonly believed that in medieval and post-medieval towns and cities death outnumbered births and that these urban centres could only survive through the influx of migrants; a concept which has come to be known as the urban graveyard ARCHAEOLOGICAL effect. Whether this was indeed the case for all cities and towns is still debated, but it is certain that urban citizens were more used to death that we are today. The PERSPECTIVES medieval graveyards in which the deceased were interred, then still located within edited by town limits, are an invaluable source of knowledge for reconstructing past lives. R.M.R van Oosten, R. Schats, K. Fast, Systematic archaeological and osteoarchaeological research of urban graveyards has N. Arts & H.M.P. Bouwmeester become the norm in the Netherlands and Belgium since the 1980s. However, many of the studies remain unpublished and larger, overarching publications in which comparisons are made between different studies are still lacking. The urban graveyard presents several studies in which the results of older archaeological and osteoarchaeological research are compared to more recent excavation data from several Dutch, Belgian and Danish cities and towns. Both the archaeological data concerning burial position, orientation, and grave goods as well as osteoarchaeological data such as demographic information and pathological observations are discussed. This well-illustrated volume is a starting point and source of inspiration for more (inter)national comparative research. The Storm Family Peder Pedersen Storm Just Pedersen Storm Peder Justesen Storm Frederik Christian Valdemar Storm Frederik Peter Evald Hinnerup Storm This booklet is a biography of Peder Pedersen Storm and descendants. From the early 1970s to the mid 1990s my father Kai Madsen worked on the family tree of the Morell family and related branches. He compiled a number of booklets which were distributed to family members both in Denmark, Holland and in the US. This compendium is a translation of his work on the Storm family with additional comments and especially images. In general, pages consist of two sheets: a scan of my father's original text in Danish on one sheet and my translation on the next sheet. What I feel is missing in his work is the sources. Apart from frequently visits to national archives, Kai had great contacts to Preben Engsig-Karup, to Jay Larsen, Henning Kristensen and to Gerda Kristensen, who all contributed greatly. I wish to acknowledge Lise Larsen Pyles who has contributed with images scanned by husband Bill Pyles in San Antonio, Texas. • Comparison of History and Fiction in Docudrama on Rescue of Danish Jews During the Holocaust
Comparison of History and Fiction in Docudrama on Rescue of Danish Jews during the Holocaust Rabbi Dr. Chaim Simons P. O. Box 1775 Kiryat Arba 9010000 [email protected] Introduction Numerous docudramas have been produced on historical events. In some cases, the contents closely resemble what actually occurred. In other cases, numerous fictional events are incorporated for dramatic effect. One such docudrama was produced relating the escape of Danish Jews to Sweden during the period of the Holocaust. In this paper, a detailed analysis will be made on this film to investigate which scenes are in fact historical and which are fictional. It must be stressed that this paper is not a comprehensive study of the rescue of Danish Jewry. Furthermore, historians discuss whether the Germans were aware of the Jews escaping to Sweden but in many cases closed their eyes to this fact, and this also includes Werner Best, the plenipotentiary appointed by Hitler to Denmark, who may have had political reasons to do so. All this is outside the scope of this paper. Brief Historical background One of the countries conquered by Nazi Germany during the early part of the Second World War was Denmark. For the first three years, Denmark was allowed to continue to run its own affairs and the Jews were not persecuted. All this changed in autumn 1943, when the Germans proclaimed martial law and plans were made to deport Denmark’s Jews in a surprise attack on the Friday night of the first of October, a few hours after the termination of Rosh Hashanah.

  • The Hinnerup Family Branch
The Hinnerup Family Branch This booklet is primarily a biography of Peder Reimer Hinnerup. It includes descriptions of his father, Anders Pedersen Hinnerup (ca. 1768-1806) and daughter Ane Petrine Frederikke Hinnerup (1834-1867). From the early 1970s to the mid 1990s my father Kai Madsen worked on the family tree of the Morell family and related branches. He compiled a number of booklets which were distributed to family members both in Denmark, Holland and in the US. This compendium is a translation of his works in 1979 and 1995 on the Hinnerup family. I have added comments and especially images. In general, pages consist of two parts: a scan of my father's original text in Danish followed by my translation on the next page. Regarding Kai's sources, he frequently visited national archives. Kai also had great contacts to Preben Engsig-Karup, to Jay Larsen, Henning Kristensen and to Gerda Kristensen, who all contributed greatly. Kai took photocopy of many documents belonging to different people now gone. Therefore in many cases it is not possible to trace a photocopy back to the original document in order to get a better print - for example a photo or scan instead of a photocopy. Dublin, Ireland, December 2017 Poul Madsen (son of Kai Madsen) - 2 - Værløse 1979 Foreword The description of the family branches of Peter Nielsen Tømmerbye and Anders Pedersen Hinnerup has been written as a branch of the Peder Pedersen Storm family branch. • Exploring Amsterdam by Tram
Exploring Amsterdam by tram Trams are a convenient and simple way to get around Amsterdam. But even more than just a way to get from A to B, a tram ride can be a sightseeing tour in itself, taking in some of the city’s best sights and attractions along the way. There are three tram routes (1, 2 and 5) that travel up and down a central ‘spine’ of Amsterdam, from Centraal Station to Museumplein and back again. Tram #1, #2 and #5 Stop: Centraal Station As Amsterdam’s main transport hub, Centraal Station is a familiar starting point for most visitors to the city. The spectacular building opened its doors in 1889, and was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. What to see and do: • Check out the vintage shops, hip cafes and arty design stores of vibrant Haarlemmerstraat to the west • Take the free ferry from behind Centraal Station to trendy Amsterdam Noord • Explore Oosterdok to the east of the station, making sure to take in the view of the city from NEMO’s rooftop terrace and stop for a drink at Hannekes Boom. From Centraal Station, the tram heads south down Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, once the city’s defence line (‘burgwal’ means ‘bastion wall’). Stop: Nieuwezijds Kolk Continue south, passing behind the impressive Nieuwe Kerk on your left. Despite being called ‘New Church’, this imposing monument actually dates from the 15th century and is only ‘new’ in relation to the nearby Oude Kerk (old church) which was deemed too small to be the parish church of Amsterdam’s expanding population in 1408.
