The Round Tower was his final large building. The Round Tower's foundation stone was laid in 1637 and the tower was completed in 1642. The picture (1) shows the King on horseback at Rosenborg Castle. It still functions as such, although no longer for scientists, but for amateur astronomers and the public. Perhaps Tycho Brahe (3) and his earlier scientific work on the island, Hven, are the reasons for Denmark's early possessing ownership of a university observatory. Even though he left Den mark in 1597, after a controversy with King Christian the Fourth, astronomic research was started and his pupil, Christen Sørensen Longomontanus (4), was assigned to organize the observatory. In his book (5) you ean see that his ideas were based on Tycho Brahe's observatory "Stjerneborg", on Hven. On The Round Tower's platform five small astronomic houses and instruments similar to Tycho Brahe's were to be erected (7). Longomontanus died before the obser vatory was completed. Trinity Church, consecrated in 1656, substituted the church hall at Regensen, and because of its size there· was easily room for all the students at one time. In 1683 the church also became the parish church. The library, situated on the floor above the church, was 1000 sq.m. This print from 1746 (8) shows the library's rectangular windows, which indicate the special usage of the churchloft. The library was divided into three rooms in 1778: the library, and two smaller rooms, a studyroom and a catalogueroom. Three institutions in one blocks of buildings was unusual, but the most unsual part of the building is the 1 spiral ramp. It winds 7 / 2 times around a hollow core. The latest examinations indicate that the spiral ramp was originally longer, which meant that it was possibIe to all the walk up to the astronomer's study, which was directly underneath the platform. There was a con nection from the top floor to the platform via a spiral stairway in the tower's outer wall. The height of the tower is 34,8 meters. The astronomer's study is now the flat of the Round Tower's inspector. t..t.. • Economy, Magic and the Politics of Religious Change in Pre-Modern
1 Economy, magic and the politics of religious change in pre-modern Scandinavia Hugh Atkinson Department of Scandinavian Studies University College London Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 28th May 2020 I, Hugh Atkinson, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that these sources have been acknowledged in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation undertook to investigate the social and religious dynamic at play in processes of religious conversion within two cultures, the Sámi and the Scandinavian (Norse). More specifically, it examined some particular forces bearing upon this process, forces originating from within the cultures in question, working, it is argued, to dispute, disrupt and thereby counteract the pressures placed upon these indigenous communities by the missionary campaigns each was subjected to. The two spheres of dispute or ambivalence towards the abandonment of indigenous religion and the adoption of the religion of the colonial institution (the Church) which were examined were: economic activity perceived as unsustainable without the 'safety net' of having recourse to appeal to supernatural powers to intervene when the economic affairs of the community suffered crisis; and the inheritance of ancestral tradition. Within the indigenous religious tradition of the Sámi communities selected as comparanda for the purposes of the study, ancestral tradition was embodied, articulated and transmitted by particular supernatural entities, personal guardian spirits. Intervention in economic affairs fell within the remit of these spirits, along with others, which may be characterized as guardian spirits of localities, and guardian spirits of particular groups of game animals (such as wild reindeer, fish).

  • VIII. Conference Reports the National Museum of Denmark 1807–2007
The project fits into studies of the second Iron Age. It takes advantage of the results of preventive excavations made at La Tène in 2003, as well as of overall knowledge gathered during over the last twenty years, as a result of the highway excavations in the Trois-Lacs area. Several PhD theses dedicated to the regional second Iron Age are underway. In collaboration with the Laténium Museum, the European Archaeological Center of Bibracte (Mont Beuvray in Bourgogne) will contribute to an international conference in Neuchâtel, in November 2007. Last but not least, this year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the site. Starting in June 2007, numerous events, exhibitions, etc. will take place in the Museum Schwab (Biel/ Bienne), in the Laténium (Hauterive/Neuchâtel), and in the Swiss National Museum (Zurich). Please send any information to: [email protected] New Research Grant In May 2007 the Getty Foundation approved a grant to the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme of $160,000 US for the Collaborative Research Grant Project of Irène Aghion, Tim Murray, Alain Schnapp and Lothar von Falkenhausen: “Traces, Collections, Ruins: Towards a Comparative History of Antiquarianism”. • The Urban Graveyard
THE URBAN GRAVEYARD THE THE URBAN GRAVEYARD THE URBAN GRAVEYARD It is commonly believed that in medieval and post-medieval towns and cities death outnumbered births and that these urban centres could only survive through the influx of migrants; a concept which has come to be known as the urban graveyard ARCHAEOLOGICAL effect. Whether this was indeed the case for all cities and towns is still debated, but it is certain that urban citizens were more used to death that we are today. The PERSPECTIVES medieval graveyards in which the deceased were interred, then still located within edited by town limits, are an invaluable source of knowledge for reconstructing past lives. R.M.R van Oosten, R. Schats, K. Fast, Systematic archaeological and osteoarchaeological research of urban graveyards has N. Arts & H.M.P. Bouwmeester become the norm in the Netherlands and Belgium since the 1980s. However, many of the studies remain unpublished and larger, overarching publications in which comparisons are made between different studies are still lacking. The urban graveyard presents several studies in which the results of older archaeological and osteoarchaeological research are compared to more recent excavation data from several Dutch, Belgian and Danish cities and towns. Both the archaeological data concerning burial position, orientation, and grave goods as well as osteoarchaeological data such as demographic information and pathological observations are discussed. This well-illustrated volume is a starting point and source of inspiration for more (inter)national comparative research. From the early 1970s to the mid 1990s my father Kai Madsen worked on the family tree of the Morell family and related branches. He compiled a number of booklets which were distributed to family members both in Denmark, Holland and in the US. This compendium is a translation of his work on the Storm family with additional comments and especially images. In general, pages consist of two sheets: a scan of my father's original text in Danish on one sheet and my translation on the next sheet. What I feel is missing in his work is the sources. Apart from frequently visits to national archives, Kai had great contacts to Preben Engsig-Karup, to Jay Larsen, Henning Kristensen and to Gerda Kristensen, who all contributed greatly. I wish to acknowledge Lise Larsen Pyles who has contributed with images scanned by husband Bill Pyles in San Antonio, Texas.
