Undefeated Olympians Collide As Champion Ronda Rousey Meets Sara Mcmann at Ufc® 170 Saturday, February 22
UNDEFEATED OLYMPIANS COLLIDE AS CHAMPION RONDA ROUSEY MEETS SARA MCMANN AT UFC® 170 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22 Las Vegas, Nevada – In what could prove to be her toughest challenge yet, UFC® women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (8-0, fighting out of Venice, Calif.) squares off against undefeated wrestling sensation Sara McMann (7-0, fighting out of Gaffney, SC) in a battle of Olympic medalists at UFC® 170 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, Feb. 22. A bronze medal winner in Judo at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Rousey recently defeated her bitter rival Miesha Tate at UFC 168 to retain the women’s bantamweight belt and remain the divison’s only champion. Now she takes on McMann, who comes in as the most decorated wrestler in the weight class, having also earned Olympic silver at the 2004 games in Athens in free- style wrestling. In addition to the Rousey-McMann tilt, (No. 3) Rashad Evans (19-3, fighting out of Boca Raton, Fla.), a former light heavyweight champion, battles the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier (13-0, fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) in his debut at the 205-pound weight class. Evans comes into the bout sporting consecutive wins over Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen while Cormier is looking to keep his unblemished professional record and make a statement in his new division. The card also features Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace (No. 6) Demian Maia (18-5, fighting out of Sao Paulo, Brazil) matching up against Canadian prodigy and Georges-St. Pierre training partner (no. 4) Rory MacDonald (15-2, fighting out of Montreal, Canada) in a battle of Top 10-ranked welterweights. -

In this context, some athletes can use illicit substances in order to improve their performance. By means of paired analysis, the present study compared the motor actions of athletes who had failed an anti-doping test versus their performance in combat against a winner or loser without doping presence. For this, 267 rounds (male and female) were analyzed in professional matches. The rounds were paired by athletes in the conditions: doping, winning and losing. Motor actions were analyzed through a specific and previously-validated protocol. Of the substances detected, anabolic androgenic steroids represented 55% (p≤0.001). Doped athletes had lower pause time (83.4±68.3 vs. 131.7±95.2, p≤0.001) and longer time at high-intensity (85.2±86.6 vs. 51.2±73.3, p=0.002) compared to the losing condition. Regarding the technical-tactical analysis in standing combat, winning presented a higher mean compared to doping in all variables except for Knockdowns (p=0.08), single body strikes landed (p=0.15), single leg strikes landed (p=0.25) and single strike attempts (p=0.4). -

Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: an Econometric
Journal of Business and Economics, ISSN 2155-7950, USA June 2015, Volume 6, No. 6, pp. 1032-1056 DOI: 10.15341/jbe(2155-7950)/06.06.2015/002 © Academic Star Publishing Company, 2015 http://www.academicstar.us Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: An Econometric Analysis of PPV Buy Rates Richard A. McGowan1, John F. Mahon2 (1. Boston College, MA 02467, USA; 2.University of Maine, ME 04469-5723, USA) Abstract: This study provides a framework by which the UFC can analyze the determinants of its PPV buy rates, a form of direct demand for the UFC. Accurately deriving demand is incredibly important in the UFC’s goal to maximize revenue and further grow the sport and equally as important for promoters, TV and cable networks. Given that the endogenous growth of the UFC has slowed greatly, specific event characteristics have emerged as the primary factors that govern the buy rate. Using a combination of empirical regression analysis and industry expertise, the UFC and promoters and others can more accurately estimate the buy rates of upcoming events. Key words: gaming; sports; econometric analysis JEL codes: C1, M1 In the past fifteen years, the sport of mixed martial arts has grown from no-rules, bareknuckle “human cockfighting” into a highly professional and incredibly popular mainstream sport with millions of fans around the world. Since purchasing its biggest rival in 2007, the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been undisputedly the largest, best quality and most popular MMA promotion in the world. In 2008, Forbes wrote an article calling it the “Ultimate Cash Machine”, valuing it at $1 billion (Miller Matthew, 2008). -

Since 2005, this player has the FBS record for forced fumbles with 16, placing him ahead of conference-mates like Roosevelt Nix and Jatavis Brown. This player could’ve played in Todd Gurley’s first game at Georgia, but was suspended for fighting teammate Fred Lee. This player’s most well-known collegiate play occurred after a failed cut-block by Jack Mewhort. This player famously chose the jersey number 46 based on his rating in the NCAA Football video game, which was likely so low because this player only played football his senior year of high school after a torn patella tendon hurt his basketball career. For 10 points, name this exceptional MAC defensive lineman and linebacker, known for returning a Braxton Miller interception 45 yards for a touchdown against Ohio State. Answer: Khalil Mack <Players> 2. An October 2020 installment of Bubble Screen by The Athletic discusses the mentoring relationship between Matt Millen and this person. Innovative Marketing, Volume 13, Issue 4, 2017 Thomas R. Robbins (USA), James E. Zemanek, Jr. (USA) UFC pay-per-view buys and the value of the celebrity fighter Abstract In 2016, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was sold for a reported price of $4 billion, the highest price ever paid for a sports franchise. This was a remarkable turn-around for a promotion that 15 years earlier was saved from bankruptcy by a $2 million buyout. This turnaround was driven by the UFC’s ability to mainstream the promotion and the sport while establishing reliable revenue streams through television contracts and massive pay-per-view events. In this paper, the authors review the pay-per-view record of the UFC and analyze the extent to which it is driven by high profile celebrity fighters with broad crossover appeal. Using statistical analysis, the authors identify the top crossover celebrities and assess the economic value they generate for the UFC. They compare this to the impact generated from the promotion’s highest ranked pound-for-pound fighter and find that celebrity has far more economic value than fighting skill. Keywords: pay-per-view buys, pound-for-pound fighter, sports franchise, crossover celebrities. JEL Classification: M30, M31. Received on: 16th of November, 2017. Accepted on: 16th of December, 2017. Plot twists add intrigue to The Game By Bill Rabinowitz THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH his year’s Ohio State-Michi- gan game was Talways going to be a special one. It still is, but partly for reasons different than it seemed a week ago. Until last week’s upset loss to Michigan State, Ohio State hadn’t lost since the second game of 2014, a span of 23 games. After running back Ezekiel Elliott criticized the play-calling following Sat- urday’s game, the Buckeyes were hit by questions about whether that revealed deeper fissures. So this Michigan game tran- scends whether Ohio State can somehow put itself back in position for a championship.
