ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE, SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN SYMPHONIES From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman FRANCO ALFANO (1876-1960, ITALY) Born in Posillipo, Naples. After studying the piano privately with Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition with Camillo de Nardis and Paolo Serrao at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Naples, he attended the Leipzig Conservatory where he completed his composition studies with Salomon Jadassohn. He worked all over Europe as a touring pianist before returning to Italy where he eventually settled in San Remo. He held several academic positions: first as a teacher of composition and then director at the Liceo Musicale, Bologna, then as director of the Liceo Musicale (later Conservatory) of Turin and professor of operatic studies at the Conservatorio di San Cecilia, Rome. As a composer, he speacialized in opera but also produced ballets, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. He is best known for having completed Puccini’s "Turandot." He had a successful international career as a concert pianist and has composed prolifically in various genres including: instrumental piano solos, chamber music, symphonic pieces and choral-symphonic music, songs, opera, cinematic and theater scores. -

La presenta «DESCUBRIENDO MIS RAÍCES» Nº 5 Mayo de 2020 Palabras de Bienvenida Me complace darles la bienvenida a la quinta entrega del Boletín "Descubriendo mis raíces", una publicación digital de carácter periódico elaborada por la Embajada de la República Argentina en Ucrania que promueve el conocimiento relativo a las destacadas personalidades del ámbito de la ciencia, los negocios y la cultura argentina, entre otros, de origen ucraniano y/o cuyos orígenes familiares se remontan a las ciudades ucranianas. La colectividad ucraniana en Argentina se remonta a fines del siglo XIX, y se posiciona como la séptima diáspora ucraniana a nivel mundial, con alrededor de 450.000 miembros, incluyendo, en algunos casos, varias generaciones. Se pueden identificar cuatro corrientes inmigratorias principales, aunque no excluyentes, de ucranianos hacia nuestro país: 1897-1914; 1920-1939; 1946-1960; y desde 1994 hasta la actualidad. La primera migración organizada tuvo lugar en la ciudad de Apóstoles, en la Provincia de Misiones. Todas y cada una de ellas han dotado a la Argentina de valiosos representantes, ya que tanto aquellos que alcanzaron pública notoriedad como aquellos que permanecen anónimos han colaborado significativamente mediante su trabajo, esfuerzo, creatividad, valores y conocimientos en la conformación de la Argentina actual. Los trascendidos sobre la generosa hospitalidad de la Argentina llegaron a la lejana Europa del Este y Central. Nuestro país abrió sus puertas a una amplia y fecunda serie de migraciones internacionales. Es menester asimismo destacar la valiosa labor que las organizaciones de la comunidad ucraniana han realizado en la Argentina con el objetivo de preservar las tradiciones y valores ucranianos en nuestro país. -

The President and CEO of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association sets the strategic direction and provides the vision towards continued and growing artistic excellence and community engagement for the Orchestra. Working with a 35-member Executive Committee, over 75 Board of Directors members, and a professional administrative staff, the President and CEO is responsible for conceiving and realizing programs related to organizational operations, human and financial resources, marketing, fundraising, and advocacy activities to ensure the Orchestra’s short and long-term goals and financial stability. The President will serve as an ambassador for the FWSO in its relationships with business leaders, government officials, arts organizations, and other key stakeholders and will build the Orchestra’s visibility and reach in the community. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has grown to become one of the most successful orchestras of its size in the United States, with an annual budget of $12 million, a 200+ concert season, and a $23 million endowment fund. The Orchestra attracts music lovers of all ages with a ten-concert Symphonic Series, a seven-concert Pops Series, several Blockbuster Specials, and a three-day Composer Festival each year at Bass Performance Hall. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has transcended the dream held by its founders in 1912 when they assembled a group of musicians to create what is now one of the community’s greatest assets. -

Dear AHS Members, Welcome to Los Angeles and the Colburn School for the 2013 Summer Institute and National Competitions! The 2013 Summer Institute's "Focus on Friends" features the finest in chamber music and pop and jazz small ensembles. The Institute opens with a performance of our own AHS Concert Artist, Elizabeth White Clark, in the incomparable Zipper Hall, home of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and ends with this year's AHS National Competition winners, including the new 2013 AHS Concert Artist. In between, we have planned many opportunities for coaching, workshops and master classes. We invite you to enjoy genres from classical music of all kinds to pop and jazz, from our opening recital by Elizabeth Hainen to coaching by Heidi Lehwalder, jazz by Carol Robbins, and a plethora of other outstanding artists. When you're not enjoying harp music at the Institute or Competitions, take the time to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and Disney Hall, as well as food and shopping at nearby Chinatown or Olvera Street! Messer-Kruse Graduate Faculty Representative Marilyn Shrude Kenneth Thompson © 2016 Octavio Más-Arocas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Emily Freeman Brown, Advisor Despite great efforts by American composers, their prodigious musical output has been mostly ignored by American orchestras. Works by living American composers account for an annual average of only 6% of all the music performed by American orchestras, while works by living composers of all nationalities combined totals a meager 11%. This study examines some of the historical breaking points in the relationship between American orchestras and new music. Five exceptional orchestras are cited, the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony, that are thriving while successfully incorporating new music in their programing. This document draws attention to the significant role new music can play in the future of American orchestras by analyzing the programing of new music and projects that support composers, identifying innovative orchestral leaders and composers who have successfully served in advisory positions, and by recognizing and discussing the many creative strategies orchestras are using today. This document attempts to increase the understanding of the need for change in concert programing while highlighting several thrilling examples of innovative strategies that are making an essential contribution to the future of orchestral music. -

Ce grand voyage musical, je suis heureux qu’il ait lieu à la Maison de la radio qui depuis le mois de novembre dernier, avec l’inauguration de notre Auditorium et la réouverture du Studio 104 entièrement rénové, est l’un des lieux qui fait vivre la musique en France. Je me réjouis d’autant plus que notre Maison, munie de ces deux salles magnifiques et d’un équipement qui met à profit l’évolution constante des technologies, accueille avec Présences un festival consacré à la création musicale. -
