LUND UNIVERSITY The Second-Generation Turkish-Germans Return ‘Home’: Gendered Narratives of Renegotiated Identities Nilay Kılınç Supervisor: Eleonora Narvselius August 2013 Abstract Turkish migration to Germany which started in the 1960s as ‘guestworker’ migration soon matured to a permanent settlement. Today, Turkish labour diaspora is the largest migrant group in Germany and Europe. The daughters and sons of the first generation Turkish migrants have a different understanding of ‘home’ compared to their parents. Their upbringing in Germany and transnational links to Turkey create a tension between their constructions of ‘belonging’ and ‘home’. This thesis evaluates the second generation’s constructions of ‘home’ within their ‘Turkish’ upbringing in Germany and their ‘return’ orientations and post-return experiences in Turkey. The special focus is given to gender roles and renegotiations in the second generation’s return journey. The empirical evidence comes from in-depth, semi-structured interviews carried out with a non-random sample of Turkish-Germans, interviewed in and around Istanbul in 2012. The analysis section of the thesis is built around answers and insights into three main sets of research questions. First, how did their upbringing within a Turkish family construct and affect their senses of ‘belonging’ and ‘home’? To what extent are nostalgia and family narratives effective on their ‘home’ constructions? Second, how did their childhood memories from Turkey affect their motivations to return to the parental homeland? Third, how does the second generation renegotiate their diasporic and gender identity in the parental homeland? Do they feel that they belong to Turkey? How do they reflect upon their diasporic past in Germany? The thesis analyses these questions with a reference to diaspora, memory, return migration, generation and gender theories. -

In contrast to previous years, no deals were concluded for units larger than 20,000 sqm and the average size of deals concluded in 2019 was around 9,900 sqm. Guest Workers in the School? Turkish Teachers and the Production of Migrant Knowledge in West German Schools, 1971 –1989 by Brian Van Wyck* Abstract: This article examines policies and practices related to Turkish teachers in West German schools in the 1970s and 1980s. Different stakeholders in Turkish edu- cation in West Germany – school administrators, parents, consular officials, and the teachers themselves – understood the role of these teachers in different ways over time, reflecting contrasting and shifting notions about the knowledge teachers were expected to pass on to Turkishpupils. In the late 1970s, West German officials began to privilege teachers’ status as migrants capable of modeling their own successful in- tegration for pupils, reflecting new assumptions about Turks in West Germany and their futures in the country. In early 1972, Hasan Akıncı arrived in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, to take up a post as a teacher for native language lessons (muttersprachlicher Unterricht) for the area’s Turkish children.1 Akıncı had interviewed for the position with the Turkish consulate in Hannover and had had no contact with either the Osnabrück school office (his future employer), the Lower Saxon Ministry of Education (Kultusministerium), or the schools where he would be working. For personal use only. Indeed, when he arrived at the school office, no one was expecting him. Nor did anyone know who, what, or where he would teach. After the officials’ confusion cleared up, Akıncı presented himself at the five primary schools to which he was assigned.2 The heads of these schools were similarly confused about his presence and the lessons he would offer. -

The region is growing rapidly. On the left bank of the Rhine, an increase of up to 170,000 people is expected in the next few years. New living space is urgently needed. In the past decades, numerous land-intensive new housing estates have been built in the surrounding area of Cologne. Large building plots and car-friendly development met the demand for living space and the dream of owning a home in the countryside. The land demands of development and traffic are in strong competition with agriculture and the open space of the landscape. This is seen by the actors in the region as a considerable sustainability problem. If settlement development were to “continue as is”, not only would more and more productive soil, which is valuable for agriculture, be sealed, but the identity of the 2,000-year-old cultural and agricultural landscape would also be lost. Therefore, the NACHWUCHS research project, funded by the BMBF, is looking for innovative agri-urban settle- ment models for sustainable regional development. -
