Cover Letter-English Rowland Unified School District The Rowland Unified School District is offering beginning and intermediate level instruction for the following instruments to fourth, fifth and sixth grade students: Flute Oboe Bassoon Clarinet Saxophone Trumpet French Horn Trombone Baritone In order that you may become acquainted with the Elementary Instrumental Music Program, the instrumental music program staff has scheduled a meeting for all interested parents and students. The meeting will be held on: PARENT/STUDENT MEETING Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Rowland High School Gym We urge you and your child to attend, as it will give the staff an opportunity to answer your questions and clarify many points regarding the instructional program. As a service to our community, we have invited several music stores to bring instruments for display and rental. Therefore, you will not have to drive from one music store to another to comparison shop. You can do this in one place, on Wednesday evening, and choose the instrument most suitable for your child. The program will be taught at all elementary schools during the regular school day. There will also be an optional Thursday night beginning and intermediate level band rehearsals at Jellick Elementary School in room P4 and the Multipurpose Room. This evening rehearsal is one hour long for each level and will start September 3, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., for beginning band students and 7:00 p.m., for intermediate level band students. Our Instrumental Music Staff will be working together to ensure an ongoing instrumental music program of increasingly high quality in our elementary schools. The child who learns to play an instrument learns discipline, cooperation with others, and a new way to a richer, fuller life. Participation in the school band will give your child one of the finest kinds of activities. An instrument automatically places a child in an educational and social environment of the highest order, and the knowledge your child will gain will be of value to him/her for the rest of his/her life.     Contemporary Youth Orchestra says happy 80th birthday to Joan Tower by Mike Telin On September 6 of 2018, Joan Tower ​ celebrated her 80th birthday. On Saturday, March 9 at 7:00 pm, in Cuyahoga Community College’s Metro Auditorium, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Liza Grossman, will honor that occasion with a concert dedicated to the eminent composer’s music. The program will include the Ohio premieres of Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 6, ​ Stroke, and In Memory (For String ​ ​ ​ Orchestra), as well as Tambor. Tickets are ​ ​ available online. ​ ​ Among her numerous accolades — Tower has just been named the recipient of the League of American Orchestra’s 2019 Gold Baton Award — she was the first woman to win the Grawemeyer Award for Music in 1990. The New Yorker called her “one of ​ ​ ​ ​ the most successful woman composers of all time,” and she has served as a source of inspiration to Grossman dating back to CYO’s fourth season in 1998. “I was researching women composers and Joan was one of the first to come up,” Grossman said during a telephone conversation. Tower has a strong connection to the city of Nashville: This year’s Conference host, the Nashville Symphony, recorded her work Made in America with conductor Leonard Slatkin at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, just prior to the venue’s grand opening in 2006. Tower’s widely performed work was commissioned by a consortium of 65 orchestras through the League’s Ford Made in America, the largest orchestral commissioning consortium in the country’s history.
