$2.00 FOOTY RECORD SENIOR FINALS SERIES WEEK 1 26th/27th August 2017 KICKIN’ IT WITH KRISTEN Editorial – Senior Final Series – Issue 1, 26th/27th Aug 2017 WELCOME TO THE FINALS By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS Welcome to the 2017 Senior Finals Series. After 18 weeks, the home and away season has come to a close and finals footy officially begins. Finals will be played across Saturday and Sunday at various venues across the west over the next four weekends, with the Division 3 and 2 Grand Finals scheduled for September 9 and 10. The Division 1 Grand Final will be played on either September 16 or 17 at VU Whitten Oval. This season has been an exciting one and this year’s finals series is shaping up to be one of the best to date. Deer Park are chasing their fifth consecutive Division 1 premiership. Spotswood and Sunshine, the only two teams to beat the Lions, are hot on their heels. In Division 2, North Footscray and the Yarraville Seddon Eagles will reignite their rivalry and Jason Cloke’s Parkside will go head-to-head with the Wyndham Suns’ potent WRFL Footy forward line. Record Finals footy is a different ball game to the regular season, so it should be an entertaining Western Region end to the season. Football League Also, a special shout out to Hoppers Crossing captain Mathew Ryan, who will play game number 400 on Sunday. President Meredith Angwin Ryan has been a stalwart for the Warriors for more than 20 years and has been a great leader and personality of our league. Congratulations on the milestone. Level 1, Whitten Oval, Footscray This year the WRFL crowned 17 new junior premiership champions. It has been a busy period for the junior competition and last weekend’s Grand Final CEO carnival at Galvin Park was a nice way to end the junior season. Turn to pages 44 and 45 Matthew Duck to see all the results. Office Keilor was also crowned the inaugural champion of the Senior Women’s WRFL/EDFL 03 9315 5400 competition. The Blues defeated Manor Lakes by 75-points, capping off an incredible undefeated season. Editor Kristen Alebakis It has been a fantastic season of Senior Women’s football, with four WRFL clubs involved – Manor Lakes, Tarneit, Caroline Springs and Glen Orden. In 2018, the WRFL hopes to field a standalone Senior Women’s competition, with several clubs across the west already expressing interest in fielding teams. Spotswood, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles, Laverton, North Sunshine and West Footscray are all working hard to recruit players. I would encourage anyone who is interested in playing women’s or girls footy next year to contact your local club. At the completion of official 3 Reserves Semi Final 2 time both goal umpires will confer and confirm to the field umpire the score is level. 2:15pm – Parkside v Wyndham Suns – If this is confirmed both teams will change Division 3 Seniors Semi Final 2 ends and play for five (5) minutes (no time SUNDAY on). After five (5) minutes (no time on), Burbank Oval both teams will again change ends and play for five (5) minutes (no time on) at 11:50am – Deer Park v Werribee Districts which time both goal umpires will confer – Division 1 Reserves Elimination Final again. During such extra play, Coaches are 2:15pm – Hoppers Crossing v Werribee not permitted to address their players.     VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.
