FOOTY RECORD SENIOR FINALS SERIES

WEEK 1 26th/27th August 2017

KICKIN’ IT WITH KRISTEN Editorial – Senior Final Series – Issue 1, 26th/27th Aug 2017 WELCOME TO THE FINALS By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS Welcome to the 2017 Senior Finals Series. After 18 weeks, the home and away season has come to a close and finals footy officially begins. Finals will be played across Saturday and Sunday at various venues across the west over the next four weekends, with the Division 3 and 2 Grand Finals scheduled for September 9 and 10. The Division 1 Grand Final will be played on either September 16 or 17 at VU Whitten Oval. This season has been an exciting one and this year’s finals series is shaping up to be one of the best to date. Deer Park are chasing their fifth consecutive Division 1 premiership. Spotswood and Sunshine, the only two teams to beat the Lions, are hot on their heels. In Division 2, North Footscray and the Yarraville Seddon Eagles will reignite their rivalry and ’s Parkside will go head-to-head with the Wyndham Suns’ potent WRFL Footy forward line. Record Finals footy is a different ball game to the regular season, so it should be an entertaining Western Region end to the season. Football League Also, a special shout out to Hoppers Crossing captain Mathew Ryan, who will play game number 400 on Sunday. President Meredith Angwin Ryan has been a stalwart for the Warriors for more than 20 years and has been a great leader and personality of our league. Congratulations on the milestone. Level 1, Whitten Oval, Footscray This year the WRFL crowned 17 new junior premiership champions. It has been a busy period for the junior competition and last weekend’s Grand Final CEO carnival at Galvin Park was a nice way to end the junior season. Turn to pages 44 and 45 Matthew Duck to see all the results. Office Keilor was also crowned the inaugural champion of the Senior Women’s WRFL/EDFL 03 9315 5400 competition. The Blues defeated Manor Lakes by 75-points, capping off an incredible undefeated season. Editor Kristen Alebakis It has been a fantastic season of Senior Women’s football, with four WRFL clubs involved – Manor Lakes, Tarneit, Caroline Springs and Glen Orden. In 2018, the WRFL hopes to field a standalone Senior Women’s competition, with several clubs across the west already expressing interest in fielding teams. Spotswood, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles, Laverton, North Sunshine and West Footscray are all working hard to recruit players. I would encourage anyone who is interested in playing women’s or girls footy next year to contact your local club. An inspired second half by Chris Molivas, four goals, led the Tigers to victory, while Nathan Black was terrific across half back and Matty Dean cracked in hard all afternoon. Despite the loss, Albion can take solace from Saturday’s effort, as the Cats set themselves for 2018. Playing coach Chris O’Keefe set the tone from the very first bounce, while Marty Dufty’s four goals was nearly match-winning. The other result at the weekend with final ramifications was Sunshine’s victory over Deer Park, which secured a double chance. The Kangaroos confirmed themselves as a real September danger, winning by 52 points against the main premiership fancy in Division 1. Despite trailing by two goals at quarter time, Sunshine kicked 13 goals to four after that point, restricting the Lions to just seven goals for the afternoon. UMPIRES CORNER

SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE AS SOME DECIDE TO RETIRE By GRAEME HODGART THE football world is abuzz with a long list of retirements occurring at the AFL level. Bob Murphy and Matthew Boyd are hanging up their boots after both having lengthy and extremely noteworthy careers with the Bulldogs. Then there are the others from various other clubs who are also bowing out in , James Kelly, , , Scott Thompson, Sam Mitchell, Steve Johnson, and Jobe Watson. What a star-studded list! Surely there have never been a more highly credentialed group of retirees all ending in the same year. Even in the local football in the WRFL there will be a few players from each club who have or will in the coming weeks or months decide that enough is enough. Sometimes it may be injuries, or work commitments, or family issues that get in the way of a continuing playing career. It was only a few weeks ago when two friends saw each other from either side of the boundary fence. The first enquired whether his mate was still playing football. The reply was succinct. “I’d love to but not with the little one.” A similar situation also occurs with the WRFL umpiring fraternity. There will be a few umpires who will decide that Season 2017 will be their last. The largest turnover generally occurs with the boundary umpires. A few might decide to switch from boundary umpiring to field umpiring. Increased studies, playing at a higher level of football, other sporting activities, employment (usually part-time) and developing relationships are generally high on the list of edging young people away from the umpiring game. Steve Sutton found it difficult to train due to a new job and so retirement came at the end of last season. Evan Eliopoulos began the season strongly, but then faded from the scene. Brian Green was on the verge of not returning, but eventually did although he is undecided about next year. On the other hand both Adrian O’Donnell and Greg Denison made strong comebacks at the beginning of this season. It will be very interesting to see who will still be umpiring in Season 2018. QUIZ The siren has sounded and the two teams are shaking hands when the field umpire notices that one player has deliberately struck an opponent to the head. What happens next? (a) The umpire reports the player. (b) The umpire ignores the incident because the game is officially over. (c) The umpire reports the player, awards a free kick and applies a 50 metre penalty. The correct answer is (a).
