CCB Project Design Document – July 4, 2011 Executive Summary Colombia is home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species despite covering just 0.7% of the planet’s surface, and has more registered species of birds and amphibians than any other country in the world. Along Colombia’s northwest border with Panama lies the Darién region, one of the most diverse ecosystems of the American tropics, a recognized biodiversity hotspot, and home to two UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. The spectacular rainforests of the Darien shelter populations of endangered species such as the jaguar, spider monkey, wild dog, and peregrine falcon, as well as numerous rare species that exist nowhere else on the planet. The Darién is also home to a diverse group of Afro-Colombian, indigenous, and mestizo communities who depend on these natural resources. On August 1, 2005, the Council of Afro-Colombian Communities of the Tolo River Basin (COCOMASUR) was awarded collective land title to over 13,465 hectares of rainforest in the Serranía del Darién in the municipality of Acandí, Chocó in recognition of their traditional lifestyles and longstanding presence in the region. If they are to preserve the forests and their traditional way of life, these communities must overcome considerable challenges. During 2001- 2010 alone, over 10% of the natural forest cover of the surrounding region was converted to pasture for cattle ranching or cleared to support unsustainable agricultural practices. -

They are found only in tropical and subtropical zone forests of Central and South America. Of the two recognized species, the larger, Oryzomys (Oecomys) concolor, occurs in northern Colombia. The author collected 27 specimens from six localities during his 1941-43 tenure of the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship and 38 specimens, including six of the smaller species, Oryzomys (Oecomys) bicolor, in other parts of Colombia while conducting the Chicago Natural History Museum-Colombian Zoological Expedi- tion (1949-52). Additionally, rodents can be an excellent model for chromosome evolution studies since many rearrangements have been described in this group.This work brings a review of cytogenetic data of Brazilian rodents, with information about diploid and fundamental numbers, polymorphisms, and geographical distribution. -

Selina Brace Ian Barnes 2 “Why should we look to the past? ……Because there is nowhere else to look.” James Burke 3 Abstract The Late Quaternary has been a period of significant change for terrestrial mammals, including episodes of extinction, population sub-division and colonisation. Studying this period provides a means to improve understanding of evolutionary mechanisms, and to determine processes that have led to current distributions. For large mammals, recent work has demonstrated the utility of ancient DNA in understanding demographic change and phylogenetic relationships, largely through well-preserved specimens from permafrost and deep cave deposits. In contrast, much less ancient DNA work has been conducted on small mammals. This project focuses on the development of ancient mitochondrial DNA datasets to explore the utility of rodent ancient DNA analysis. Two studies in Europe investigate population change over millennial timescales. Arctic collared lemming (Dicrostonyx torquatus) specimens are chronologically sampled from a single cave locality, Trou Al’Wesse (Belgian Ardennes). Two end Pleistocene population extinction-recolonisation events are identified and correspond temporally with - localised disappearance of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). A second study examines postglacial histories of European water voles (Arvicola), revealing two temporally distinct colonisation events in the UK. -

COLE , A ND TIM CA RO AB S TRA C T The Chiquibul Forest Reserve is located in western Belize in the Maya Mountains and protects one of the largest patches of rainforest remaining in Central America. We conducted inventories of small mammals in the forest reserve from 4 July through 8 August 2001. Our five trapping sites were centered within a few kilometers of the Las Cuevas Field Station. In total, we ran 3,686 trap-nights capturing 154 specimens (4.2% trap success) representing 15 species of small mammals. We ran mist nets for ten nights capturing 39 phyllostomid bats representing six species. Heteromys desmarestianus was the most abundant mammal trapped; it was captured at a rate four times more frequently than all other species. Ototylomys phyllotis and Handleyomys alfaroi were next in abundance. Almost all species of rodents and bats were in a high state of reproductive activity. Our efforts confirmed an additional eleven species to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, five non-volant: Cryptotis mayensis, Oligoryzomys fulvescens, Handleyomys rostratus, Sigmodon toltecus, Nyctomys sumichrasti, and six volant: Carollia sowelli, Sturnira lilium, Artibeus jamaicensis, Dermanura toltecus, D. watsoni, Centurio senex. The biogeographic affinities of small mammals of the Maya Mountains lay more nested within the Central American faunal group – less so than the Yucatan faunal region. The discovery of Cryptotis mayensis in the Maya Mountains provided a significant range and ecological extension. -

Abstract The population genetic structure of two sympatric species of sigmodontine rodents (Oligoryzomys nigripes and Euryoryzomys russatus) was examined for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence haplotypes of the control region. Samples were taken from three localities in the Atlantic Rain Forest in southern Brazil, along an altitudinal gradient with different types of habitat. In both species there was no genetic structure throughout their distribution, although levels of genetic variability and gene flow were high. [email protected] (SS). * Corresponding author The mechanisms that mediate the formation and coexistence of species assemblages have been a historical issue in evolutionary ecology, raising the question of whether these assemblages are shaped at random or are influenced by biotic and abiotic processes. An increasingly popular hypothesis points out that certain patterns or “assemblage rules” determine coexistence patterns within assemblages at a regional or continental scale. Thus, morphological and ecological similarities could influence the degree and intensity of competition between species. Considering the morphology of organisms within an environmental framework, we could assess the morphology and understand the ecological role of a given species within the assemblage. This study assesses the similarities and differences of Andean rodents within local assemblages through a Principal Component Analysis (PCA), using craniodental characters of these species to establish whether the relationships between morphometry and coexistence provide evidence to explain assemblage structure patterns. We measured rodent specimens deposited in the Colección Teriológica of the University of Antioquia, collected from the Western and Central cordilleras of Colombia. We recorded 15 cranioden- tal variables from all specimens, which were analyzed with a PCA to search for a general organization pattern within assemblages.
