Foto: Dag Fosse, KODE «I disse dager vet jeg sannelig ikke om jeg er musiker eller byggmester!» Dette skrev Grieg til sin forlegger i Leipzig i mars 1885. Byggingen av villaen nærmet seg ferdigstillelse, og den 41 år gamle Grieg gledet seg over å få skape et ordentlig hjem på eiendommen som han og Nina hadde gitt navnet Troldhaugen. Allerede de første somrene Nina og Edvard tilbrakte her, kom nysgjerrige tilreisende for å se stedet og naturen der det berømte ekteparet bodde. Og siden fulgte millioner etter. Gradvis har landskapet formet seg til det Troldhaugen vi kjenner i dag, med Troldsalen, komponist- hytten, museumsbygget og tilrettelagte turveier. Troldhaugens 130 år lange historie er en fortelling om både romantisk lengsel og om fremtidsrettet entreprenørskap. Landskapet speiler ikke bare Griegs liv og musikk, men også mange generasjoners begeistring for den. Nå bygger vi på Troldhaugen igjen. Denne vinteren og våren gjennomfører vi andre og siste del av den store rehabiliteringen av Troldsalen. Hele foajeen bygges om, med nye fasiliteter og et fornyet arkitektonisk uttrykk. Vi får to innganger i stedet for én, mer dagslys inn og enklere tilkomst fra hele museumsområdet. Dette er en storstilt oppgradering av Norges flotteste kammermusikksal, og en drøm som går i oppfyllelse! Vi takker både private og offentlige bidragsytere som gjør dette mulig, og vi ser frem til gjenåpningen av Troldsalen i mai med stor forventning. I mellomtiden tilbyr vi en serie med intimkonserter og andre arrangementer i Griegs villa og i Marie og Harald Sæveruds hjem på Siljustøl. I mai åpner også Lysøen, det mest romantiske og mest fantastiske av alle Norges kunstnerhjem, med eget arrangementsprogram gjennom hele sommeren. Lysøen, Troldhaugen og Siljustøl er alle unike arenaer for opplevelser i grenselandet mellom historie, musikk og natur. De tre eksklusive komponisthjemmene som KODE forvalter, åpner både for historisk kunnskap, for intense musikalske opplevelser, for refleksjon og debatt og romantisk svermeri. Her har vi tusenvis av historiske gjenstander og minner, flere hundre konserter i året, fugler, årstider og badestrender, og trær som knekker i vinterstormene. Dette er museer som lever. Velkommen!     Christianialiv Works from Norway’s Golden Age of wind music Christianialiv The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces The second half of the 19th century is often called the “Golden Age” of Norwegian music. The reason lies partly in the international reputations established by Johan Svendsen and Edvard Grieg, but it also lies in the fact that musical life in Norway, at a time of population growth and economic expansion, enjoyed a period of huge vitality and creativity, responding to a growing demand for music in every genre. The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces (to use its modern name) played a key role in this burgeoning musical life not just by performing music for all sections of society, but also by discovering and fostering musical talent in performers and composers. Johan Svendsen, Adolf Hansen, Ole Olsen and Alfred Evensen, whose music we hear on this album, can therefore be called part of the band’s history. While the inspiration for much of his music rests in the hills and fjords, the folk tales and legends, and the pastoral settings of his native Norway and his melodic lines and unique harmonies bring to the mind of the listener pictures of that land, to restrict Grieg's music to the realm of nationalism requires one to ignore its international character. In tracing the various transitions in the development of Grieg's compositional style, one can discern the influences of his early training in Bergen, his four years at the Leipzig Conservatory, and his friendship with Norwegian nationalists - all intricately blended with his own harmonic inventiveness -- to produce music which is uniquely Griegian. Though his music and his performances were received with acclaim in the major concert venues of Europe, Grieg continued to pursue international recognition to repudiate the criticism that he was only a composer of Norwegian music. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that the international influence of this so-called Norwegian maestro had a profound influence on many other composers and was instrumental in the development of Impressionist harmonies.

    EDVARD GRIEG (1843 - 1907) When Edvard Grieg grew up, Bergen was a small and busy European town. All through its past as a Hanseatic city, Bergen had established a net of connections that made it the only continental Norwegian city. The main business was the trade with fish and other products typical for the coast. There was a close contact with the rest of Europe, a fact that is easily retraceable in the origin of the bergener. Most of the families within the city limits had ancestors in Denmark, Germany, Scotland, England, the Netherlands and other European nations. Bergen was also a meltingpot for the population along the Norwegian coast. Edvard Griegøs family was a typical Bergen- family: His great grandfather Alexander Greig (later changed to Grieg) came to the city from Cairnbulg close to Aberdeen in Scotland in the 1770s. He founded the family business, which was trade with dried fish and lobster across the North sea. The raising of a child in a bourgeois family in the 19th century Norway often included teaching of music or other forms of art. Edvard Grieg´s grandparents were active in the society of music "Musikkselskapet Harmonien", one of the worlds oldest orchestras, founded in 1765. Edvard Grieg was also so lucky to have the best piano teacher in Bergen as a mother. Gesine Hagerup had studied at the musicconservatory in Hamburg, Germany, an education that usually was offered only to men. She played with "Harmonien" and at chamber music concerts in Bergen. CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen 15th of June 1843, in the family´s house in Strandgaten 152.

    griEg: PianO WOrKS Grieg’s composing hut fOrEWOrd from the Piano concerto and the Lyric Pieces , his piano repertoire is rarely heard on the concert platforms outside Scandinavia. On this album, i have sought to present the more familiar Lyric Pieces alongside the less well-known works: the Sonata, the Ballade (his most substantial solo piano work and a favourite of Brahms), and a selection of the wonderfully intriguing Slåtter . The Slåtter , grieg’s arrangements of Hardanger fiddle melodies, are for me the most interesting works of all. Written relatively late, they show grieg experimenting with bold harmonic clashes that foreshadow Bartók’s language. i am delighted to be able to conclude the album with an epilogue, a Lyric Piece by the acclaimed composer cheryl frances-Hoad. This is the first of a set of four Lyric Pieces cheryl will write for me, each inspired by a composer i feel a close connection to: grieg, Janáček, Schubert and ravel. We are grateful to the rvW Trust for their support of this commission. in preparation for this recording, i decided to visit norway again. i had the invaluable experience of hearing the Slåtter melodies in their original setting, as i was able to listen to and perform to the leading norwegian Hardanger fiddlers Knut Hamre and frank rolland. i am grateful to Eilif Løtveit for his historical insights on grieg and to the Troldhaugen Museum. none of this would have been possible without Laila nordø. The idea for this cd came after an invitation to give a recital in the concert hall next to grieg’s home, Troldhaugen, in Bergen two years ago.
