Althusser and “Communism” Étienne Balibar C Abstract: C R R I This paper aims at examining the relation of Althusser to communism, its I S levels and instances, as well as the transformations of his thought with S I I Althusser and S regard to the communism. It explores the possibilities of communism as S understood and theorized by Althusser himself. & & C C R Keywords: R I Althusser, Marxism, Communism, theory, politics. I “Communism” T T I I Q Q U U E I must begin with some preliminary remarks, caveats if not warn- E ings. The first is that I am too directly implicated in the history which I am / / going to discuss to see it from an external and objective point of view. Volume 2 / Volume 2 / Issue 2 This entails both advantages and disadvantages. Among the advan- Issue 2 tages, I would include, to speak as Nicole-Edith Thévenin recently has, the engagement of the subject in its object, which means that there is an Étienne Balibar interest in its truth and not only a concern for the possibility of objectivity. Among the disadvantages I would include the inevitable inadequation of my ideas on the question, in the Spinozian sense of a knowledge “of the first kind,” “mutilated and confused,” because it is based in a large part on memories and mostly subject to the illusion that I am able to maintain by virtue of having been the contemporary of certain facts and events, which in reality have to a great extent eluded me and without doubt continue to elude me. This is particularly true of Althusser’s facts and gestures, intentions, even obsessions. I was his student and close friend from 1961 to his death, but I am very far from having having known every- thing, including what concerns his political and philosophical ulterior mo- tives. The published texts, including the enormous mass of posthumous publications, only partially alleviate my uncertainties. Moreover, unlike others, I have not done any research in the archives. Memories, thus, can continue their work of concealment. The second remark is more fundamental. Any reflection on the relations between Althusser and “communism “ by definition refers to our current perception of what is or what was communism, as a political and ideological phenomenon inscribed in history, at the same time that it can contribute to enlightening it. Likewise, it is based on the perception that Althusser himself had, or rather it attempts to elucidate it. Between these two perceptions, ours and his, both of which are evolving, there is necessarily a discrepancy [décalage], and a temporal discrepancy begins, resulting in an intellectual discrepancy. For Althusser, communism, as a 8 Althusser and “Communism” 9 Althusser and “Communism” “movement” (I will return to the connotations of the term), thought itself C by the real course of history in which he attempted to intervene, like every C R R in the present, a present which was at the same time, as Leibniz would I Marxist since Marx without exception, even if only by thought and theory, I say, “pregnant with the future.” The more this present was troubled, S but it is very difficult to resist the impression that all this thought, like a S I I uncertain, contradictory, the more its reality was affirmed and, in a way, S bird which crashes into the glass wall of its cage, constitutes a defensive S perceived, because the contradiction could be thought of as an intrinsic reaction against real history, in which the treasures of inventiveness (“di- & & characteristic, it could even serve to specify the modalities of the future alectical” or not) that it often deploys merely affords a more tragic dimen- C C which the present would bear. For us on the contrary (and here, I obvi- R sion. It is true that one can also attempt to read things upside down (and R ously take sides under the innocent appearances of an “us,” which does I I do not rule out that an intention of this type is behind the symposium I T T not oblige the reader), communism is not a real movement, it is at most I that we are holding, or in the minds of those who are attending): if it was I (which as a matter of fact is not anything), a hope against all odds, that is, Q proven that, fighting against not only the “crisis of Marxism,” but, what Q U U an idea or a subjective conviction. Thus there is a great temptation retrospectively to interpret the But all this being said, I am aware of the absolute necessity—even period in which Althusser’s communism is inscribed as the period of the for interpreting the work of Althusser himself—of providing a factual acceleration of decline and decomposition, whose “contradictions,” lo- corrective to the representation of the history of the 20th century as the cally as well as globally, were the warning signs, and by contrast to record history of a decline and decomposition more or less deferred for a long his repeated assertions of the irreversible nature of the fusion of the time, contrary to what was the communist imagination. The big question that seems as so many pathetic illusions.1 Even in the 1978 text from Venice, 'The to me must dominate the interpretation of Althusser’s elaborations and Crisis of Marxism’, in which Althusser notes that Marxism was incapable interventions in the field of the “communism” of his time, is the question of understanding its own history and integration into history—which was of knowing whether or not the intermediary period, say from 1960 up to the not for him an extrinsic limitation, a simple “insufficiency,” but what af- milieu of the 70s, when—for a short time—the “eurocommunist” perspec- fects the interior, at its core, its scientific pretension—he still claims that tive was being outlined, contains a revival of challenges to capitalism, the revelation of this crisis (and by the same token the possibility, even and more generally to the dominant social order, the bearer of historical an “aleatory” one, of its resolution) is due to “the power of an unprece- alternatives of which we no longer have any idea of today. And if one accepts that the 1 On the “fusion,” see the Goshgarian correspondence. anti-imperialist movements of any sort, from the Arab world to Africa and 2 Althusser, 1978 from South East Asia to Latin America, contained within themselves the 10 Althusser and “Communism” 11 Althusser and “Communism” possibility of inventing another path of development than that which rests C party, especially since these were, as an exception to the structures of C R R on the extreme polarization of social inequalities, does this mean that I the party of the epoch, in academic milieus, not exclusively intellectuals. • Didier Daeninckx and the Manouchian Resistance Group
1 An Ever-Present Past: Didier Daeninckx and the Manouchian Resistance Group ‘Writing is always “against”! […] Personally, I am against authority and the disappearance of memory’ — Didier Daeninckx (1997: 68)1 November 1943. Following a series of highly visible attacks in Paris, committed by the Communist, ‘immigrant’ Resistance group of Missak Manouchian,2 the Brigades spéciales (special Brigades) of the French police finally pounce on the perpetrators, and arrest follows arrest. At the end of a very brief trial a few months later, twenty-three members of the combat unit, including Manouchian himself, are condemned to death. The twenty-two men are immediately shot at Mont Valérien, on 21 February 1944 (the one woman, Olga Bancic, is executed separately, beheaded in Stuttgart on 10 May). More or less simultaneously, the photos of ten of these freedom fighters are displayed on the infamous Affiches rouges (red posters), which are plastered over the walls of French towns and cities, and which denounce ‘l’Armée du crime’ (the Army of crime), most obviously composed of people with names of foreign, if not Jewish, origin. Shortly afterwards, the Liberation of France, for which these combatants willingly gave their lives, commenced. That is by no means the end of their story, however. Throughout the post-war period, the group regularly comes back into the headlines, forming, as Margaret Atack has noted, ‘an important focal point for remembrance and controversy’ (2013: 175).3 For example, in 1955, in honour of the group, and to mark the inauguration of a rue du Groupe Manouchian in Paris, Louis Aragon writes the poem which will first appear in L’Humanité on 5 March 1955, entitled ‘Groupe Manouchain’, and then in his collection, Le Roman inachevé, as ‘Strophes pour se souvenir’ (1956: 225-26).

Over sixty years later, a prize-winning French author, Didier Daeninckx, is regularly depicting key members of this band of warriors in his novels, short stories, children’s books, and other writ- ings, thereby finding himself at the forefront of a veritable wave of imaginative representations and commemorations of these martyrs for the cause of freedom. After exploring this individual obsession of Daeninckx’s and its relationship to the broader retrospective trend, this article ultimately contends that not only the author’s subject matter, but also many of his narrative strat- egies, suggest that France has still not really managed to come to terms with the legacy of the Occupation.

In 2016, Brexit and Donald Trump’s election shattered prevailing political orthodoxies by mobilizing populations around a potent cocktail of xenophobia, protectionism, and Isovereignism. Forces with a family resemblance to these movements are calling the shots in Italy, Hungary, and Poland. Yet while France had for years been a major breeding ground of far-right ideas, it seemed, in its May 2017 presidential election, to dodge the populist bullet: Emmanuel Macron’s triumph over Marine Le Pen was widely touted as a victory of hope, tolerance, and internationalism over fear, hate, and nationalist retrenchment.

While completing work on this study he was a Research Associate at the Research Institute on Communist Affairs of Columbia University. The Research Institute on Communist Affairs Marxism in Modern France appears in a series of studies sponsored by the Research Institute on Communist Affairs of Columbia Uni versity. The Institute promotes studies on international Communism and on various aspects of Marxist theory and practice. While the Institute does not assume responsibility for the views of the authors, it feels that these studies contribute to a better understanding of the role of Communism in the world today. Preface The "end of ideology," so often proclaimed as a fact by contemporary writers, has never in practice signified anything but the end of socialist ideology. In the language of political analysis, as conducted under the conditions of advanced industrial society in the Western world, the term "ideology" denotes any critique transcending the official bound aries of those mental disciplines that have themselves grown up in response to the urgent practical and intellectual requirements of the new postbourgeois industrial order. The labor movement, as the tra ditional carrier of doctrines regarded as subversive by those in control, falls under the twofold suspicion of instinctive hostility to the status quo and of addiction to political myths stemming from the nineteenth century.
