Captain Gary J. Powe, Supply Corps, United States Navy Captain Powe is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Florida A&M University, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in 1990. Additionally, he received a Master degree in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University in 2000. Upon graduation from the Navy Supply Corps School in December 1990, Captain Powe reported onboard USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA 3). From January 1991 to December 1993, he served as Disbursing Officer, Sales Officer and Quality Assurance Officer. During this tour he qualified as a Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer. In January 1994, Captain Powe reported to Armed Forces Radio and Television, Broadcast Center (AFRTS-BC), Sun Valley, California as Logistics Support Officer until September 1995. After completing the Supply Officer Department Head Course in November 1995, he reported to USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) as Supply Officer. While onboard MITSCHER from November 1995 to April 1998, the ship completed a highly successful maiden Mediterranean deployment and earned the Blue “E” for Supply Excellence and subsequent Battle “E” for overall ship excellence. Following his tour onboard MITSCHER, Captain Powe reported to Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility (AFWTF), Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico as Supply Officer/Comptroller. In July 2000, Captain Powe reported to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) as Business Financial Manager for the Submarine Sensor Systems Program Office (PMS435). During this tour he earned his Level III DAWIA certification in Business Financial Management and Level II certification in Program Management. In February 2003, Captain Powe reported to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) as Readiness Officer and Assistant Supply Officer. While onboard ENTERPRISE, he completed a successful combat deployment to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. He also qualified as a Naval Aviation Supply Officer. In February 2005, Captain Powe reported to Defense Logistics Agency and served in the Logistics Operations and Readiness Directorate (J-3/4) as Supply Chain Management Officer. Captain Powe reported to staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N6) in March 2008 as IT Budget Stewardship Branch Head and Executive Assistant for the Director, Navy Networks. In June 2010, Captain Powe reported as Supply Officer, Base Command Group, Al Asad Air Base, Iraq volunteering for a Global Support on Terror Assignment (GSA). In June 2011, he reported onboard Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) as Military Director, Aviation Readiness and Resource Analysis (AIR 6.8). In March 2014, Captain Powe reported to OPNAV N84 as Science and Technology Resource Sponsor. Finally, in March 2017 Captain Powe returned to NAVAIR in Patuxent River, Maryland for his twilight tour as Military Director, (AIR 6.8) Captain Powe’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit Medal (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, a member of the Navy Acquisition Professional Community and a Certified Defense Financial Manager with Acquisition Specialty .
