CITY TOUR OF CRACOW ( duration 4 hrs – morning tour ) Duration: 4 hours Departure: 9.00 everyday Return: 13.30 Price: PLN 130 ,- / per person For over a thousand years, Krakow has been the centre of science, culture and art in Poland and our city sightseeing tour is a fine introduction to this historic city. The tour could begin with a short walk along the streets of the former Jewish district of Kazimierz. Next, Wawel Hill, crowned by Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral and the seat of royal power up till the 17 century. The Castle was home to many Polish kings and queens and the royal crypts in the Cathedral their final resting place, along with several other Polish heroes. A walk up Grodzka street leads you to the heart of Krakow, the Rynek Główny, or Main Market Square. There, the large, Gothic Cloth Hall is the perfect place for shopping for local souvenirs. Our last sightseeing stop is the twin-spired St. Mary's Church with its famous medieval altar by Wit Stwosz and where, every hour, the brave trumpeter of Krakow still calls out his warning. Price includes: transportation, English speaking guide, entrance tickets to the Royal Castle, Royal Cathedral, St. Mary’s Church. 2. The TRACES OF JEWISH CULTURE – ( duration 4 hrs, morning tour ) Duration: 4 hours Departure: 9.00 Wednesday and Sunday Return: 13.30 Price: PLN 130 ,- / per person Visit the historical centre for Poland's Jews on a tour of Kazimierz, the district where „Schindler's List” was filmed. Named after the king who invited Jews to Poland in the 14th century, Kazimierz became the flourishing centre of Jewish religion and culture. Due to the policy of religious tolerance that prevailed in Poland from the 15th century, Kazimierz became a safe heaven for diverse groups of Jewish refugees from all over Europe. The tour aims to retrace this diversity which resulted in the construction of numerous synagogues (including the oldest of the preserved synagouges in Poland) and a very unique atmosphere which is still present there. Also, you might recognise some of the sights that appeared in the Oscar winning Schindler's list which was shot in this area. The tour ends with a visit to the monument commemorating the victims of the former Nazi concentration camp in Płaszów. Price includes : English speaking guide, hotel pick up from selected hotels, admission to the Old Synagogue, Remuh Synagogue and Cemetery. 3. WIELICZKA SALT MINE – ( duration 4 hrs, twice a day ) Duration: 4 hours Departure: morning tour 9.00 or afternoon tour 15.00 - everyday Return: 13.30 ( morning tour ) or 19.15 ( afternoon tour ) Price: PLN 135,- / per person Legend has it that the salt mines in Wieliczka were a part of the dowry of the Hungarian princess, Kinga, when she wed Bolesław the Chaste over 700 years ago, making the Wieliczka Salt Mine one of the oldest in all of Europe. Over the centuries, devout and superstitious, miners have carved fabulous figures, monuments and altarpieces out of its salt walls. These amazing works of art, in addition to the mine's historical importance, have earned the Wieliczka Salt Mine a place on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Our route through the mine leads you through galleries and chambers on three levels, from 64 to 135 meters below the ground, including the unique and richly ornamented Chapel of the Blessed Kinga. The route is 2.5 km long and you have to walk down 400 steps all told. The last stop in the mine is the souvenir shop and snack bar. From here, a lift carries you back to the surface. (Lift down instead of walking down stairs - only on special request) Price includes: transportation, English speaking guide, entrance fees. PLEASE NOTE: The tour is not recommended for people with claustrophobia. 4. DUNAJEC RIVER GORGE AND NIEDZICA CASTLE ( duration 8 hrs ) Duration: 8 hours Departure: morning tour 8.00 Monday, Thursday Return: 16.00 Price: PLN 310,- / per person The raft trip down the Dunajec River through the Pieniny Gorge and along the Polish-Slovak border is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Poland. The towering cliffs and the limestone rock formations of the gorge itself plus the picturesque mountain scenery, the surrounding forest and the colourful river guides make for a wonderful day in a pristine and wild environment. For many centuries, the Dunajec valley formed an important trade route to Hungary and so Czorsztyn Castle (13th c.) and Niedzica Castle (14th c.) were built as strategic strongholds high on the cliffs on either side. Czorsztyn Castle was destroyed in a peasant uprising, but it has been partially restored and its ruins make for an adventurous visit. Niedzica Castle, in a delightful counterpoint, is in perfect condition. In fact, today, it is actually a working hotel in addition to housing a fine museum. Our trip begins at Niedzica Castle, then continues to the raft wharf in Sromowce Nizne and ends 15-km later in Szczawnica. It lasts two or three hours, depending on the water level of the river. While on the raft, you will enjoy excellent view of the high summits of Trzy Korony and Mt. Sokolica. Price includes: transportation, English speaking tour escort, English speaking guide, rafting, ticket to the castle. Duration 8 hrs. PLEASE NOTE: Tour is guaranteed for minimum 4 people! Meals not included in the price. 5. ZAKOPANE - THE TATRA MOUNTAINS ( duration 8 hrs ) Duration: 8 hours Departure: morning tour 8.00 Wednesday, Saturday Return: 16.00 Price: PLN 230,- / per person Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains Travel to Zakopane, a mountain resort nestled at the foot of the Tatra mountains and boasting breathtaking views of Poland's countryside. Zakopane is the winter capital of Poland, thanks to its splendid natural scenery, its pistes and hiking trails, and a rich folk culture. You will begin your exploration of the area by taking the funicular railway to the top of Mount Gubałówka for views over the granite and limestone peaks of the Tatra Mountains. Having returned to the oldest part of Zakopane, we will visit the charming wooden old parish church and the most unique cemetery in Poland. To complete your experience, you have a chance to visit the enormous regional market and enjoy lunch in a regional restaurant serving local specialities. If you wish to find out more about this unusual region you can visit the Tatra Museum or the village of Chochołów (famous for its 150-year-old wooden log cabins and a serene atmosphere). PLEASE NOTE: Tour is guaranteed for minimum 4 people! Meals not included in the price 6. AUSCHWITZ AND BIRKENAU MUSEUM – ( duration 6 hrs, twice a day ) Duration: 4 hours Departure: morning tour 9.00 or afternoon tour 15.00 everyday Return: 15.30 ( morning tour ) or 21.00 ( afternoon tour ) Price: PLN 130.-/per person The most well know cemetery and place of genocide in the world. Started in 1940 as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners, Auschwitz became the centre for extermination of European Jews in 1942. During 1940-1945, the Nazis killed about 1,500,000 people here, mainly Jews, but also Poles, Gypsies, Russians POWs and members of other nationalities. Our tour begins with a 15-minute documentary film about the liberation of the camp, then a museum-guide shows you the exhibitions in some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber, and the crematorium. After a short break, we continue to Birkenau, where we go up the watchtower above the entrance gate to see the view of this largest of all Nazi extermination camps. Price includes: transportation, English speaking guide, entrance tickets to the museum. PLEASE NOTE: Meals not included in the price. There is only one 15-minute break during the tour. GUIDE TO THE GEOLOGICAL EXCURSIONS OF THE XXXVI ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF POLAND, PIEN17NY MOUNTAINS, 1963 by Krzysztof Birkenmajer, Kazimierz Bogacz, Stefan Kozłowski and Stanisław Węcławik Excursion I A (19. IX. 1963) The excursion was devoted to the hydrogeological, geochemical and balneotechnical (as well as balneotherapeutical) problems of mineral waters of Szczawnica. Excursion IB (19. IX. 1963) During the excursion were shown outcrops of andesite dykes of Mt. Bryjarka at Szczawnica, as well as Quaternary terraces of the Grajcarek stream valley. Excursion IC (19. IX. 1963) The members of the excursion visited a clay pit at Krościenko, which exposes Pliocene clays and’ gravels with abundant and well preserved plant remains (references: Szafer 1946-7, 1950, 1954; K l i m a s ze w- s k i 1948; Birkenma j e r 1954a, 1958a). Excursions II A (20. IX) and III A (21. IX. 1963) The programme of the excursions included outcrops of the Podhale — 413 — Palaeogene (flysch) near the southern contact of the Pieniny Klippen Belt at Szaflary, stratigraphy and tectonics of the Pieniny-, Branisko-, and Czorsztyn Series, as well as the problem of the relation of the Upper Senonian Mantle (Jarmuta Beds) to the Klippen Series between the villa ge Szaflary and the Szaflary quarry. Later on, at Krempachy, has been demonstrated a section of the Pieniny Klippen Belt including strongly disturbed tectonically klippes of the Czorsztyn Series, as well as Dogger-, Middle and Upper Cretaceous members of the northern zone of the Klippen Belt, referred now to the Magura Series. Similar problems were also discussed at Dursztyn, where -the excursion had finished.

  • Neotectonics of the Polish Carpathians in the Light of Geomorphic Studies: a State of the Art
Acta Geodyn. Geomater., Vol. 6, No. 3 (155), 291-308, 2009 NEOTECTONICS OF THE POLISH CARPATHIANS IN THE LIGHT OF GEOMORPHIC STUDIES: A STATE OF THE ART Witold ZUCHIEWICZ Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, A. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland *Corresponding author‘s e-mail: [email protected] (Received January 2009, accepted March 2009) ABSTRACT Neotectonics of the Carpathians used to be studied extensively, particular attention being paid to the effects of large-scale domal uplifts and open folding above marginal zones of thrusts and imbricated map-scale folds, and rarely to the characteristics of young faulting. Neotectonic faults tend to be associated with the margins of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin, superposed on the boundary between the Inner and Outer Western Carpathians, as well as with some regions within the Outer Carpathians. The size of Quaternary tilting of the Tatra Mts. on the sub-Tatric fault were estimated at 100 to 300 m, and recent vertical crustal movements of this area detected by repeated precise levelling are in the range of 0.4-1.0 mm/yr in rate. Minor vertical block movements of oscillatory character (0.5-1 mm/yr) were detected along faults cutting the Pieniny Klippen Belt owing to repeated geodetic measurements performed on the Pieniny geodynamic test area. In the western part of the Western Outer Carpathians, middle and late Pleistocene reactivation of early Neogene thrust surfaces was suggested. Differentiated mobility of reactivated as normal Miocene faults (oriented (N-S to NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW) in the medial portion of the Dunajec River drainage basin appears to be indicated by the results of long-profile analyses of deformed straths, usually of early and middle Pleistocene age.

  • Selected Geosites Within a Proposed New Trans-Border Pieniny Geopark (Polish-Slovakian)
Acta Geoturistica volume 5 (2014), number 2, 46-63 Selected geosites within a proposed new trans-border Pieniny Geopark (Polish-Slovakian) JAN GOLONKA, MAREK DOKTOR, KRZYSZTOF MIŚKIEWICZ, MICHAŁ KROBICKI, and TADEUSZ SŁOMKA Department of General Geology and Geotourism Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, A.Mickiewicza 30 Ave., 30-059 Kraków, Poland (Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT Only one geopark in Poland is on UNESCO list – Muskau Arc Geopark but one of the first propositions was very interesting cross-border Polish-Slovakia geopark Pieniny. The proposed geopark includes the central, most interesting part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt and the adjacent areas of the Central Carpathian Paleogene and Western Flysch Carpathians. The specificity of the Pieniny Klippen Belt is that it is a unique area with a complex geological structure resulting from its multi-stage history. The geopark’s core belongs to the Polish Pieniny National Park (Pieniński Park Narodowy) and its Slovak equivalent the Pieninský Narodný Park. The primary task in the framework of Geopark project will be an inventory and valorization of geosites. The authors attempt to provide the review of the most important and significant geotouristic attraction within the proposed. The selected objects include The Rogoźnik Rock, the Białka River water gap at Krempachy, Snozka Pass, Wżar Mountain, the Czorsztyn Castle, the Red Monastery (Červený Kláštor - Czerwony Klasztor), the Dunajec River Gorge, Szczawnica, the Zaskalnik Waterfall, and the Homole Gorge. This paper attempts to diagnose the causes and effects of spatial chaos in this area, using the DPSIR method. The Three Questions method was used to assist in analysing the effects of disorder in the context of violating sustainable development. The analysis demonstrated that the causes of spatial disorder were mainly of legal and historical origins, with the most visible effects of this chaos being those related to the dispersion of buildings. Minimising spatial chaos requires extensive education, as well as amending legislation to limit the scope of decisions on development conditions. A national financial mechanism supporting the development of the Carpathians would also seem to be a desirable improvement. Key words: Carpathian Convention, DPSIR, mountainous landscape, rural landscape, spatial chaos, spatial planning, 'Three Questions' method Abstakt: Górskie obszary wiejskie są wrażliwe na niewłaściwe zagospodarowanie przestrzenne.

  • The Influence of the Deep Seated Geological Structures on the Landscape Morphology of the Dunajec River Catchment Area, Central Carpathians, Poland and Slovakia
Contemp.Trends.Geosci., 7(1),2018,21-47 DOI: 10.2478/ctg-2018-0002 The influence of the deep seated geological structures on the landscape morphology of the Dunajec River catchment area, Central Carpathians, Poland and Slovakia Bartosz Wołosiewicz Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, Al. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland * corresponding author: [email protected] Received: 10th April, 2017 Accepted: 28th February, 2018 Abstract The area of the Dunajec river basin includes several geological units in the Central Carpathian region at the Polish-Slovakian borderland. The paper focuses on the geomorphometric parameters of the drainage system to recognize the influence of the deep seated geological structures on the morphology of the Dunajec river basin (Central Carpathians). The study were enriched with analysis of the geological maps and lineaments extracted from Digital Elevation Model. According to the obtained results, the massive NW-SE trending fault zones play a vital role in the geological architecture of the researched area. The development of the secondary fault structures has been determined by these dislocations and the manifestation of their activity can be observed as deformations of some of the other tectonic structures along the main fault zones, especially at the folds’ axes. Additionally, the geometric and morphometric features of the drainage system have also been influenced by the activity of these deep structures. The tectonic activity represented by the level of morphological rejuvenation, visible in the light of the morphometric parameters of the streams and the drainage basins, varies greatly between the tectonic units.
