E X C U R S I O N I a (19. IX. 1963) the Excursion Was Devoted to The GUIDE TO THE GEOLOGICAL EXCURSIONS OF THE XXXVI ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF POLAND, PIEN17NY MOUNTAINS, 1963 by Krzysztof Birkenmajer, Kazimierz Bogacz, Stefan Kozłowski and Stanisław Węcławik Excursion I A (19. IX. 1963) The excursion was devoted to the hydrogeological, geochemical and balneotechnical (as well as balneotherapeutical) problems of mineral waters of Szczawnica. Excursion IB (19. IX. 1963) During the excursion were shown outcrops of andesite dykes of Mt. Bryjarka at Szczawnica, as well as Quaternary terraces of the Grajcarek stream valley. Excursion IC (19. IX. 1963) The members of the excursion visited a clay pit at Krościenko, which exposes Pliocene clays and’ gravels with abundant and well preserved plant remains (references: Szafer 1946-7, 1950, 1954; K l i m a s ze w- s k i 1948; Birkenma j e r 1954a, 1958a). Excursions II A (20. IX) and III A (21. IX. 1963) The programme of the excursions included outcrops of the Podhale — 413 — Palaeogene (flysch) near the southern contact of the Pieniny Klippen Belt at Szaflary, stratigraphy and tectonics of the Pieniny-, Branisko-, and Czorsztyn Series, as well as the problem of the relation of the Upper Senonian Mantle (Jarmuta Beds) to the Klippen Series between the villa ge Szaflary and the Szaflary quarry. Later on, at Krempachy, has been demonstrated a section of the Pieniny Klippen Belt including strongly disturbed tectonically klippes of the Czorsztyn Series, as well as Dogger-, Middle and Upper Cretaceous members of the northern zone of the Klippen Belt, referred now to the Magura Series. Similar problems were also discussed at Dursztyn, where -the excursion had finished. For more informations on the subject dealt with, the reader is referred to the pa pers by Birkenmajer (1963a, c). Excursions II B (20. IX) and III B (21. IX. 1963) The programme ifor the excursions included stratigraphy and tecton ics of the Jurassic-(Cretaceous members of the Czorsztyn-, Niedzica-, and Branisko Series. Furthermore, have been discussed the problems of the relation of the Upper Senonian (Jarmuta Beds) and! Palaeogene depo sits to the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The points of observations were: the group of klippes of the Czor sztyn Castle (for more information — see Birkenmajer 1963a, c), the section of the Dunajec River Gorge at Niedzica, the hill of the Nie dzica Castle, and the klippes at the village Niedzica (o.c.). Excursions II C (20. IX) and III C (21. IX. 1963) The programme of the excursions included stratigraphy and tectonics of the Magura Series Palaeogene, the tectonic position of the Jarmuta Beds (Upper -Senonian) and the Variegated Beds (Cenomanian-iCaimpan- iain), tectonic structure of some klippes of the Branisko Series near the contact with the Magura Palaeogene, structure of andesites of the Mt. Wżar, as well as some hydrogeological problems. The points of observation were: Hulba on the Dunajec River (Subma- gura Beds, Lower Eocene — see Birkenmajer 1962c), Ciechorzyn near Czorsztyn (Frydman Beds, Lower Eocene — see Birkenmajer 1963f), Brzeziny near Czorsztyn (Jarmuta Beds — see Birkenmajer 1963a, PI. XIV, Fig. 3), Mt. Wżar ((see the preceding summary by S. Ko złowski), Krościenko (Branisko Series and Magura Palaeogene — see Birkenmajer 1958a; Horwitz 1963; Bogacz, Węcławik 1962, 1963), Łąkcica and Tylimanowa (N of Krościenko — see Bogacz, Węcławik o.c.). Excursions II D (20. IX) and III D (21. IX. 1963) The programme of the excursion included stratigraphy and tectonics of the Czorsztyn-, and Niedzica Series, tectonic and stratigraphic posit ion of Jurassic and (Cretaceous members associated with the Jarmuta-, and Variegated Beds, as well as geological, petrological and mineralogical problems of the andesites. The history of the XVIIIth century mining of ore-bearing veins was also presented. The points of observations were: Mt. Jarmuta, east of Szczawnica (references: Małkowski 1958; Birkenmajer 1968'b; M a ł o- szewski 1962; Matras 1959; Wojciechowski 1955), and the vicinity of Jaworlki (Homole Gorge and Krupianka stream — see Bir kenm ajer 1963 a). — 414 — Excursion II E (20. IX. 1963) The excursion started from Szczawnica and its members climbed a tourist path up to the highest peak of the Pieniny Mts. (Trzy Korony, 982 m a,si.). The programme of the excursion included mainly strati graphy and tectonics of the Pieniny-, Branisko-, and the Czertezik Series. Excursion III E (21. IX. 1963) The excursion was devoted to the fresh water Neogene deposits of Domański Wierch and Orawa (see the preceding summary by M. Ł a ń- c u c k a - S r o d o n i o w a), as well as to the klippes of the Branisko Sc ries and its mantle (Jarmuta Beds). The following points of obsevations were visited: Miętustwo (Domański Wierch) and Stare Bystre, Lipnica Wielka and Chyżne. Additional Excursion (22. IX. 1963) The additional excursion was organized for a part of the members of the annual meeting to show the exposures of the Tithonian luimachelle at Rogoźnik (Czorsztyn Series — see descriptions by Birkenmajer 1962 c, 1963 a) and, afterwards, the melmbers of the excursion floated down the Dunajec River Gorge (in the Pieniny Mts., from Czorsztyn to Szczawnica) in wooden rafts, enjoying magnificent landscape and good, shining weather. • Neotectonics of the Polish Carpathians in the Light of Geomorphic Studies: a State of the Art
Acta Geodyn. Geomater., Vol. 6, No. 3 (155), 291-308, 2009 NEOTECTONICS OF THE POLISH CARPATHIANS IN THE LIGHT OF GEOMORPHIC STUDIES: A STATE OF THE ART Witold ZUCHIEWICZ Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, A. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland *Corresponding author‘s e-mail: [email protected] (Received January 2009, accepted March 2009) ABSTRACT Neotectonics of the Carpathians used to be studied extensively, particular attention being paid to the effects of large-scale domal uplifts and open folding above marginal zones of thrusts and imbricated map-scale folds, and rarely to the characteristics of young faulting. Neotectonic faults tend to be associated with the margins of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin, superposed on the boundary between the Inner and Outer Western Carpathians, as well as with some regions within the Outer Carpathians. The size of Quaternary tilting of the Tatra Mts. on the sub-Tatric fault were estimated at 100 to 300 m, and recent vertical crustal movements of this area detected by repeated precise levelling are in the range of 0.4-1.0 mm/yr in rate. Minor vertical block movements of oscillatory character (0.5-1 mm/yr) were detected along faults cutting the Pieniny Klippen Belt owing to repeated geodetic measurements performed on the Pieniny geodynamic test area. In the western part of the Western Outer Carpathians, middle and late Pleistocene reactivation of early Neogene thrust surfaces was suggested. Differentiated mobility of reactivated as normal Miocene faults (oriented (N-S to NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW) in the medial portion of the Dunajec River drainage basin appears to be indicated by the results of long-profile analyses of deformed straths, usually of early and middle Pleistocene age.

Wojciech BIAO, Ewa ZARZYCKA, and Stanisaw LASOCKI Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, Poland e-mails: [email protected] (corresponding author), [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Czorsztyn Lake is an artificial water reservoir backed up by the hy- dropower plant Niedzica earth dam on Dunajec River in south Poland. Its filling began in 1995 and ended in 1997. The reservoir of 234.5 million m3 capacity is shallow, between 20 to 50 m of water column, on average. Until 2011 the seismic activity in this region was sparse, some 1 event trimonthly. However, in November 2011 more than 60 events occurred. Such bursts of activity, separated by low activity periods, continue to ap- pear. Since August 2013 the area is monitored by a local seismic net- work. The setup allows to accurately locate the epicenters and to determine source mechanisms for stronger events. The events are clus- tered and aligned along NE-SW direction and their mechanisms are very similar, indicating N-S strike slip faulting. This and the irregular pattern of activity suggest that this seismicity is triggered by the reservoir im- poundment. Key words: triggered and induced seismicity, Pieniny Klippen Belt. 1. PRACE GEOGRAFICZNE, zeszyt 112 Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej UJ Kraków 2003 Czesław Guzik, Jan Leśnicki DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL SETTLEMENT IN PODHALE Abstract: In their paper the authors discussed the historical development of the settlement inthe Podhale Region, since the Middle Ages to the contemporary epoch, against the natural conditions and evolution of the political situation. Various functional types of rural settlement were shown, with the spatial patterns and traditional forms of farm architecture, observed in this part of Poland. Key words: Podhale, rural settlement, history, architecture, spatial pattern 1. An outline of history Natural conditions in the Podhale region were less favourable for the settlement than those in other parts of Poland. In the Middle Ages eve the discussed area was covered by forest, its flat zones were swampy and marshy, the severe climate and poor soils were also discouraging factors. Moreover, this peripheral region was dangerous and needed a military protection. The first settlers came from the Vistula river valley, along its tributaries. Thepermanent settlement has been developed here since the 13th c. Its proves are names of rivers and streams in documents, i.e. Biały and Czarny Dunajec, Wielki and Mały Rogoźnik, Piekielnik, Leśnica and Poroniec (Dobrowolski 1935). The above mentioned settlers originated from the regions of the early cities – those of Cracow, Bochnia and Sandomierz. There were three main routes of their migration – the Cracow route, along the Raba and Skawa valleys, the Sandomierz route (the earliest one) along the Dunajec river valley, and the Szczyrzyc route. The latter one started at Szczyrzyc monastery, the Cisterian one.

R. Ingardena 6, 30-060 Kraków, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The article presents the effect of human-caused environmental changes in areas of the Czorsztyn-Niedzica and Sromowce Wyżne reservoirs and the Pieniny Mountains in the southern Poland (Western Carpathians) after the building of the dam on the Dunajec river. The author focused on the impact of the dam on the fauna structure (fi sh, amphibians, birds, mammals, zoobentos, molluscs and terrestial insects: weevils, owlet moths, and pollinating insects – butterfl ies and bumble-bees). The species composition, species rich- ness, abundance, and species diversity have changed after fi lling reservoirs with water. The observed changes varied across different systematic groups of animals and their biotopes. We assume that majority of changes have been the effect of direct and indirect infl uence of strong anthropogenic pressure and succession.
