welcome to a season unlike any yet seen at The Shaw. That’s not surprising, is it? This year and a bit has been unlike anything any of us have lived through before. The frustration, for anyone who works in the field of live performance, has at times been overwhelming. But if one looks for a silver lining, it isn’t hard to find: I think I will never again hear anyone say that live is dying, or an unnecessary luxury. The sparkling eyes of the audiences who came to our concert series last fall tell a different story. Even with masks on, there could be no mistaking the smiles on their faces. Human connection will never be a luxury. However we gather this year (and of course our priority will be keeping everyone safe), let’s take a moment to look at each other, to smile with our eyes, and to feel grateful for the chance to experience something together. We can’t make it on our own. tim carroll, artistic director

8 Director’s Notes by Craig Hall

The original dynamic duo is back, and this time it’s personal! Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse is the fourth Sherlock adventure that I have directed, and the second to be penned by playwright R. Hamilton Wright. The world’s most famous fictional detective has become something of a cottage industry for Wright, who also wrote the adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles that the Shaw Festival produced in 2018, and Sherlock Holmes and the American Problem (another original Holmes adventure), which was produced by Vertigo Theatre that same year. Wright has shown a particular flair for expanding on Conan Doyle’s creations. He has honed in on some of the character’s quirks and eccentricities, and has used them to make the master of deductive reasoning a little more human. His original adventures have also expanded on the Holmes and Watson partnership, and to me it is this relationship that is the key to the public’s enduring love of these stories. I have been describing Raven’s Curse as Sherlock Holmes meets Downton Abbey, as I believe it will appeal to fans of both franchises. Besides the usual motley crew (Holmes, Watson, Mrs Hudson, Mycroft), the play features a wholly original character in Miss Fiona MacKenzie, Sherlock’s adopted cousin. As Sherlock’s intellectual equal and soulmate, Fiona offers the opportunity for us to see a whole new side of our usually cold and calculated hero, and thrusts a strong woman to the fore of the adventure. To me it is this kind of speculative adaptation that will keep this franchise relevant and entertaining. Now sit back and put your detective hat on, because the game is afoot! 9

OPPOSITE: ILLUSTRA- TION BY FROM A 1904 EDITION OF “.” Sherlock Holmes: Icon of Page and Stage by Dr Isabel Stowell-Kaplan

In 1899, some twelve years after the character first appeared in print, Sherlock Holmes stepped onto the stage in American theatre star ’s production of Sherlock Holmes. A runaway success, the production moved quickly from City to and beyond, becoming a mainstay in both British and American theatrical repertoires for decades to come. Sherlock Holmes was no mere production; it was a cultural phenom- enon, and one in which Gillette was squarely at the centre. This theatricalized Holmes was, in an important way, his twice over. For not only did Gillette pen the adaptation but, already a famed matinee idol, he starred as the titular detective, coming to play the elegant sleuth more than a thousand times. The staggering success of Gillette’s production is a testament to the power of theatre and a reminder that though Sherlock Holmes appeared first on the printed page, our cultural understanding of the character has been mediated through the theatre almost since the start. Indeed, the overlapping nature of the initial Gillette performances and Doyle publications means that in a sense neither the stage nor page entirely pre- cede one another. Arthur Conan Doyle’s 13 first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in 1887 and his last in 1927. Gillette’s many appearances as the titular detective of his own play, meanwhile, began in 1899 and ended in 1932, thus both succeeding and preceding Doyle’s“ creations and challenging any clear order of influence. The question of just who “made” Holmes and how, was further complicated by the appearance of Frederic Dorr Steele’s well-circulated illustrations. As Steele himself admitted, “The play first saw the calcium in 1899, but The Return of Sherlock Holmes, with my pictures, was not published until four years later. Everybody agreed that Mr Gillette was the ideal Sherlock Holmes, and it was inevitable we should copy him… But while the actor was seen by thousands, the maga- zines and books were seen by millions; so after a score of years had gone by, few could remember which ‘did it first.’” As a result, as Rosemary Cullen and Don B. Wilmeth have written, “audiences who saw the play for the first time in its 1929-1932 revival were struck by Gillette’s exact correspondence to all their notions about how Sherlock Holmes should look and act.” In his own tribute marking Gillette’s final farewell tour as Holmes, Doyle wrote that his only objection was that Gillette had made the “poor hero of the anaemic printed page a very limp object as compared with the glamour of your own personality which you infuse into his stage presentment.” ILLUSTRATION BY FOR THE ADVENTURE OF SILVER BLAZE. PUBLISHED IN THE 14 STRAND MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 1892.

In fact, Gillette gave more than his personality and profile to the character of Holmes. Borrowing himself from the English illustrator Sidney Paget, Gillette adopted the now- infamous cap as part of his stage costume; while Paget had introduced the hat to some illustrations in the 1890s it was Gillette who made the hat the indispensable acces- sory it now is. Indeed, the hat is today such a famous accessory it has become something for playwrights and screen-writers to imaginatively reckon with, making knowing nods or insider jokes to acknowledge its presence or sometimes absence. Dramatic legend also has it that, motivated by some version of theatrical necessity – to avoid obscuring either his voice or his face – Gillette insisted upon curving the straight pipe of the novels. Whether the reason is true, it is clear that Gillette’s intervention changed the popular conception of Holmes’s proper pipe. This ability of actors to set and bequeath props, as well as attitudes and actions, to the characters they play is of course not new. As Tiffany Stern observes in Making Shakespeare: From Stage to Screen, Richard Burbage’s habit of putting his hand on his dagger in his performance of Richard III became so closely associated with the part that “years later, during the civil war, frightened politicians were still described as being ‘in such a perpetuall bodily feare of their owne shadowes … that like cruell Richard, their hands are always upon their Dagers.’” We might similarly regard the creative contribution of William Gillette to the cultural icon that is Sherlock Holmes. Always alert to theatrical potential, Gillette ensured that his production emphasized the dramatic tendencies of Holmes, guaranteeing his Holmes was a character fit for the stage. Despite Sherlock Holmes’s willingness to don a disguise – a trait turned ingeniously on its head in Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse – there is always a risk that his manner of detection might be too cerebral to be effectively staged. William Gillette, like R. Hamilton Wright and Craig Hall today, made sure his Holmes was effectively integrated into the dramatic world. What is more, Gillette’s regular reappearance in his most famous role enabled him to mimic the serial form of the original stories. Though Gillette appeared almost invariably in the same, albeit slightly altered, drama his frequent reappearances enabled him to renew and strengthen his contribution through time. Gillette’s regu- lar and long-standing return(s) to his most famous role also helped to con- firm the sense that he and Holmes were one and the same as well as to give the impression that Holmes lived beyond the bounds of either the page or stage. The choice of both Vertigo Theatre and the Shaw Festival to serialize the casts of their Holmes plays – with the same actors recurring in the roles of Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson 15 – enables the audience today to share something of that same experience. The relationships between the characters as well as with the audience seem both to pre-exist and exceed the bounds of each individual dramatic event. When William Gillette stepped off the train at in 1899, Conan Doyle’s biographer John Dickson Carr would later describe him as looking like “the living image of Sherlock Holmes.” Gillette in a sense continues to live on WILLIAM GILLETTE AS SHERLOCK HOLMES, 1899. in this his Holmesian legacy but, now as then, it is neither static nor fixed. The character of Holmes is renewed and reworked with every new production staged. Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse joins a host of more recent adaptations and creations, including The Hound of the Baskervilles produced here at the Shaw Festival in 2018, continuing to shape and reshape Sherlock Holmes for our times, just as William Gillette once did for his.

R. HAMILTON WRIGHT, who has been a professional actor for nearly forty years, first partnered with his good friend and colleague David Pichette in a stage adaptation of James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, which had its world premiere at ACT Theatre in Seattle in 2011. This led to a commission from the Seattle Repertory Theatre to adapt Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, which received its premiere there in 2013. His original play Sherlock Holmes and The American Problem pre- miered there in the spring of 2016. It was recently pro- duced at Vertigo Theatre in Calgary. His play Greensward was just produced in 2017 by map Theatre in Seattle. SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859-1930) is most famous as the inventor of Sherlock Holmes, but he had a R. HAMILTON WRIGHT varied career as a writer, journalist and public figure. He was born in into a prosperous Irish family and trained as a doctor, gain- 20 ing his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. He then settled in and divided his time between medicine and writing. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in “A Study in Scarlet,” pub- MICHELLE RAMSAY lished in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887. His Sherlock Holmes detective stories rocketed Conan Doyle to fame, taking time from the historical novels he would rather write, so in 1893 Conan Doyle “killed off” Sherlock Holmes in . His public, however, was outraged, so much so that in 1901, Conan Doyle resurrected Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Holmes ultimately was featured in a total of fifty-six short stories and four novels, and Conan Doyle wrote a number of other novels, including The Lost World. His non- fiction works included a pamphlet justifying Britain’s involvement in the Boer War, in which he served as a medical officer, and for which he was knighted, and histories of the Boer War and World War I, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed. Conan Doyle also twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. In later life he became very interested in .

CRAIG HALL Director SHAW 2021: Director for Sherlock Homes and The Raven’s Curse. My first theatre memory is playing the singer in a re-enactment of the music video for One Night in Bangkok. It was grade seven. There was a platinum wig. There was a crop top. You can imagine the rest. The performance earned me the only scholastic award that I received in grade school. My parents were so proud. Thirty-four years later and I have tried my hand at almost every job in the theatre. There have been wigs, but happily crop tops have not been common. I owe so much of this extraordinary life to Kathryn Shaw, the former head of Studio 58. Thanks Kathryn, for allowing me to find my own way. Thanks to Tim Carroll for having me back once again. Thanks to Anna, my kids, and the Vertigo team for allowing me to take the time.

KEN MacKENZIE Designer SHAW 2021: Designer for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse. I am from directly north of Niagara-on-the-Lake as the crow flies, hailing from Scarborough, Ontario. I started design- KEN MacKENZIE ing because I loved both working in theatre as well as working as a visual artist. I continue to design because of the endless learning and challenge of design. Every project asks something new – to 21 make a new discovery or to pick up a new skill. I think I’ve come to understand that my training is an ongoing pursuit. But the one thing all the people who made the deepest impact on me had in common, was that they all pushed me to trust my own voice and to use it.

MICHELLE RAMSAY Lighting Designer SHAW 2021: Lighting designer for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse. I was born and raised in Prince George, bc. My first theatre experience is not one that I remember, but rather a story that my family tells. When I was five, we were visiting my mother’s family in New York, and they took me to see Peter Pan on Broadway. As it finished, I turned to my dad and asked if we could see another ‘movie’. As children, my siblings and friends and I would put on plays for our families around holiday time and I would do a lot of the organizing, including lighting them with whatever lamps I found around the house. The adults in the house were always very supportive despite the (probably questionable) quality. My dorky lighting ways were solidified when I picked the colour CAMERON DAVIS of my high-school graduation dress from a gel swatch book.

CAMERON DAVIS Projection Designer SHAW 2021: Projection designer for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse. From a young age I knew I wanted to be in theatre. I was not sure what I wanted to do specifically and dabbled in a variety of roles. Eventually I came across projec- tion design and this seemed to be the place for me. Thus far, it has been an exciting career path, allowing for the opportunity to be part of many great productions and develop the craft of projection design. Being part of a creative team that helps to visually create the world for the actors and audience to play together is truly one of my greatest joys. JOHN GZOWSKI Composer / Sound Designer SHAW 2021: Composer/sound designer for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse. Born and raised in Toronto, I originally planned to be a guitarist and was playing with several bands when, at twenty- five, I was asked to play guitar in a rock version of Rigoletto at Theatre Passe Muraille. A couple of years later, I was back there doing music and JOHN GZOWSKI sound design for Eugene Strickland’s Quartet, directed by Alisa Palmer. I played live on-stage with my partner Julia Aplin, working through the rehearsal with actors to figure out, for the first time, how to marry music with text. We won a Dora and the next year I was asked to do four- teen shows. It’s been a solid and entertaining ride since then. Here at Shaw, The Divine, Dracula and The Hound of the Baskervilles are a few shows that I’ve worked on that have really made me proud.

JOHN STEAD Fight Director SHAW 2021: Fight director for the season. I was born in Saskatchewan, and the first time I saw a play JOHN STEAD was at the Greystone Theatre at the University of Saskatchewan. I was in my second year of a bachelor degree, and I remember thinking how fantastic it was and that pursuing the arts was something I wanted to do. The next day I added theatre as my second major, and three years later I completed my degree with a double major in Theatre and Political Science. During my three years in the drama program, I would end up choreographing the fight scenes, as I was competitive

in both sabre and martial arts. I found that I had a CLAIRE JULLIEN great love for it, and upon graduation I headed off to Toronto to make my way as a stunt man 22 and a fight director. DAMIEN ATKINS DAMIEN ATKINS Sherlock Holmes SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and The Devil’s Disciple, 5th season. I used to write fan letters to Brent Carver. I had first seen him as Cyrano de Bergerac at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, and I decided that night that he was – and would always be – my favourite living actor. He set my heart on fire. He was incredibly funny, unpredictable, emotional. It looked like magic, but I knew it must be hard work. So I sent him fan letters, and to my delight he often replied; graciously, encouragingly. Brent’s work and generosity meant the world to me as a young actor. In time, Brent became a mentor, a castmate, and a friend. He is gone now, and the loss is pierc- ing, but I cannot quite conceive of it; I feel his spirit around me, near me, ever-present as air.

JASON CADIEUX Connor Ferguson SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse; 3rd season. My first memory of being in a theatre is the gymnasium of George R. Gauld, Jr School. Vinyl floors, retracting bas- ketball hoops and proscenium stage. We had our weekly assembly there, Jeff Healey’s high school band played for us, and that’s where we put on our school plays. My first role ever was the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. JASON CADIEUX I was nine and terrified of performing. Opening night, the moment the pow- erful Oz was revealed, I cowered with all my might. The audience laughed. The laughter gave me courage to speak louder and, yes, to shamelessly go for more laughs. Of course that didn’t work KATHERINE GAUTHIER and that fascinated me – it still does.

KATHERINE GAUTHIER Lucy / Alice SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and The Devil’s Disciple; 3rd season. Are you out there? Are you masked? Am I masked? What does the show look like? What does the world look like? If you are reading this: You made it to the theatre! I made it to the theatre! Words fail, so let me just say this: I’m deeply grateful that you came. Theatre needs you and boy, have I missed you. Thank you for braving this strange time to sit in a dark room or tent with a bunch of strangers. You are my miracle. Thanks also to Peter Hinton for directing my sister in Jacob TwoTwo in Kingston in the 1990s. I was six, apparently “too young to audition” (even though my heart-wrenching rendition of “On My Own” was ready to go). This early defeat made me hungry to get on-stage.

CLAIRE JULLIEN Mrs Hudson SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse 23 and Charley’s Aunt; 13th season. Now more than ever, I recognize and appreciate the importance of theatre, art, creativity, imagination. How much it is needed. How much we all miss it and the absolute need for human connection. I long for the theatre, and I am very grateful to be at The Shaw and in the company of like-minded people. In my twenty-five-year career, that is one of the reasons I loved being on-stage – the

MARLA McLEAN surprise, intimate and immediate connection with my fellow actors and the audience. At the Shaw Festival I have lots of favour-ite roles, but I most enjoyed playing heroine Lois Relph in The Stepmother (my first season!), the unapologetic and ambitious Pearl Grayson in , and the woman of principles, Lesbia Grantham in Getting Married.

MARLA McLEAN Beatrice SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and Charley’s Aunt; 15th season. Growing up in Nova Scotia, I had the great fortune of finding my regional theatre early in life. The company created an apprenticeship of sorts that allowed me (who couldn’t afford to train) a chance to learn on my feet. More companies should endeavour to find creative ways to support young actors from a working- class background. If you find yourself able, search out ways to facilitate this in your own community. It can change a young artist’s life. Inspiration in our work comes from many places and I’m eternally grateful for, and inspired by, my partner and our wee boy. “This is the true joy in life; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” – gbs. MIKE NADAJEWSKI MIKE NADAJEWSKI Dr Angus Mowbray / Mycroft SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and Charley’s Aunt; 6th season. It is with great opti- mism that I write this bio for The Shaw’s 2021 season. Even now, uncertainty is still very much a character that we all have to contend with on a daily basis – but I am inspired and in awe of The Shaw’s unwavering perseverance, the good will that they have extended to their company and staff, and their dedication to you, our loyal patrons. The Shaw has kept my spark intact and enabled me to pivot within our devastated indus- try, feeding my artist as well as my tummy. Thank you, dear patron, for being here now, today – never before (certainly in my lifetime) has it ever been so abundantly clear how integral live performance is, and we couldn’t do it without you.

CHICK REID Nanny Bull SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and The Devil’s Disciple; 8th season. I was born in Toronto and raised in Ajax, Ontario. I was one of the lucky ones who made the annual trek to Stratford, and my first play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starring a cast of CHICK REID now Canadian legends, one of whom was Barbara Bryne as Puck. The dream began in that magnificent room and would be fulfilled when I wore Barbara’s mantle, playing Puck there years later. I watch similar dreams begin near my home in Warkworth, where an inspiring group of professional and community players gather each Christmas in The Barn to weave storytelling and music in a 24 magical setting of boughs and fairy lights. Sometimes I am a story- teller, other years I am in the audience – either on- or off-stage, I see youngsters dream; and that makes me happy.

RIC REID Dr John Watson SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and Charley’s Aunt; 18th season. Welcome back! Inspiration. Where have I found it? At The Shaw I have worked opposite Goldie Semple. Who could not be inspired by her? You could fill an encyclopedia with the stories of Robert Benson and Al Kozlik, who were so gracious in passing along their wisdom and experience. Bernard Behrens was a great spirit of a man, whose drive to excel left its mark. To be on-stage with Jennifer Phipps was a ride like no other. I will miss the laughter, drive and punch of Mary Haney’s performances. Jonah McIntosh…so talented and marvellous that you could not breathe without RIC REID being inspired. David Schurmann, a gentle man with a heart of gold. And Neil Munro. There are no words for all that he meant to this company. Inspiration is not lost, it is remembered and carried forward.

DONNA SOARES Fiona MacKenzie SHAW 2021: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse, 1st season. I am from Vancouver: the traditional, an- cestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəəm (Musqueam), Sk_wx_wú7mesh (Squamish), and Seí- witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. While living and working here in Niagara-on-the-Lake, I have found it so healing to be steps away from the water whenever I get to feeling homesick. My walks along the lake and through the trails have offered me time for introspection. Being an actor, I frequently speak text written by other people. Lately I’ve been thinking about how I can make work that responds to what is happening in the world and pushes conversations forward, even when operating within the parameters of someone else’s words. I will take this question home with me as I continue to work in theatre, film and television.

DIANE KONKIN Stage Manager SHAW 2021: Stage manager for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and Charley’s Aunt; 13th season. Growing up in Northern Ontario, my only option was to create and manage my own entertainment. After winning an award for a play I wrote in grade three, and early aspirations of being a New York producer, I jumped into stage-managing university cabarets DONNA SOARES and experimental collaboratives. After many indie shows, and touring for seven years across Canada, the us and Asia, I landed at my Shaw home in 2009. Over the winters, I pretend to play congas and travel south to manage talent for a film and music festival in Sayulita, Mexico.

ASHLEY IRELAND

DIANE KONKIN Assistant Stage Manager SHAW 2021: Assistant stage manager for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse and Charley’s Aunt; 4th season. When I was a little girl, my Nana would take my sister and me to the theatre. Whether it was a large-scale production in Toronto or a small community theatre production I didn’t know the difference, it was always so thrilling. On one of these occasions, while reading through a programme, we saw that my sister and I could volunteer backstage ASHLEY IRELAND as crew members. Having no idea what we were get- 21 ting into, my sister convinced me to sign up with her. Nervously we were assigned our off-stage roles and I quickly fell in love. As cast members, props and set pieces whirled around me backstage, I realized that this is where I had to be.

KATIE FITZ-GERALD Apprentice Stage Manager SHAW 2021: Apprentice stage manager for Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse; 2nd season. I have always been doing theatre, but the first time I tookit seriously was when my high school did The

RIC REID KATIE FITZ-GERALD Sound of Music, and I never stopped. I decided to go into stage management when I realized that I got to be a part of every piece of the show. There is this moment just as the stage manager calls for the lights to come down in the house, the audience quiets and instantly has their full focus on the stage. In those thirty seconds, as it all simmers down, there is this unspoken collective agreement that this group of people from all walks of life are going to laugh, cry, gasp, smile and go through a journey together; and as a stage manager, I get to facilitate that. “The Shaw has always been a form of respite from our busy lives. It was only natural for us to become actively involved in the Shaw community as volunteers and donors. Over the past year, we have reflected on all the pleasant experiences and activities that we’ve enjoyed at the Festival and it became apparent that we both needed and wanted to leave the Shaw Festival a legacy that would support this

wonderful organization’s ability to continue Schmidt. Tina by Photo Collins. Glenna and Derek touching the lives of all those who enjoy its work now and into the future.” – Derek & Glenna Collins
