    Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings.

    Pianist, teacher and organiser of musical events Jarosław Drzewiecki has won a host of prizes at prestigious competitions, including the Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Bolzano, the UNISA Piano Competition in Pretoria (the Estelle Zwick Prize), a Grand Prix at the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale in Marsala, Sicily and a Grand Prix and four special prizes at the Concurso Internacional de Musica in Porto. He has appeared in Europe, Canada, the United States, Japan. With orchestras, he has toured Russia, Portugal, the Netherlands and South Africa. He has also performed at the music festivals in Yokohama, Lisbon, Porto, Gaming-Kartause, Vienna, Cape Town, Amsterdam, Antonin, Słupsk, Duszniki Zdrój, Warsaw, Poznań and Bydgoszcz. Jarosław Drzewiecki has been on the jury of multiple music competitions. He has chaired the juries of the Maurycy Moszkowski International Competition ‘Per aspera ad astra’ in Kielce (2005-2013), the Miłosz Magin Competition in Łódź, the Fryderyk Chopin Competition of Polish and Ukrainian Music in Dnipropetrovsk and the International Baltic Chopin Competition in Narva (2001-2004). He has also been a jury member at the piano competitions in Kirovohrad, Gomel (Belarus), Moscow (2012-2014) and Lviv, as well as at the Lysenko Music Competition in Kiev and the Concurso Internacional de Musica da Cidade do Porto (1999-2001). The pianist can boast a rich catalogue of recordings. Amongst 11 CDs and SACDs, he has recorded music by Karol Szymanowski (released by Polskie Nagrania), the complete 27 Etudes by Fryderyk Chopin (he was the first Polish pianist to have them released on SACD) and 18 Polonaises by Fryderyk Chopin (released by Pony Canyon), chosen a record of the month in Japan.

    THE MINI-COLUMBARIUM IN CARTHAGE’S YASMINA CEMETERY by CAITLIN CHIEN CLERKIN (Under the Direction of N. J. Norman) ABSTRACT The Mini-Columbarium in Carthage’s Roman-era Yasmina cemetery combines regional construction methods with a Roman architectural form to express the privileged status of its wealthy interred; this combination deploys monumental architectural language on a small scale. This late second or early third century C.E. tomb uses the very North African method of vaulting tubes, in development in this period, for an aggrandizing vaulted ceiling in a collective tomb type derived from the environs of Rome, the columbarium. The use of the columbarium type signals its patrons’ engagement with Roman mortuary trends—and so, with culture of the center of imperial power— to a viewer and imparts a sense of group membership to both interred and visitor. The type also, characteristically, provides an interior space for funerary ritual and commemoration, which both sets the Mini-Columbarium apart at Yasmina and facilitates normative Roman North African funerary ritual practice, albeit in a communal context. When the relevant literature is reviewed, it is seen that research has been conducted on idioms and proverbs found in textbooks used to teach Turkish to foreigners. In general, texts have been used for teaching idioms and proverbs. The use of songs in teaching idioms and proverbs seems to be of great importance for students to repeat, hear and recall them. The current study aims to investigate whether the songs of the Turkish Pop Star, Tarkan can be used as a tool to teach Turkish idioms and proverbs. In this study, the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, has been used. A total of 81 songs from Tarkan’s 8 albums were listened, transcribed and investigated. The idioms and proverbs found in these songs were checked from the “Idioms and Proverbs Dictionary” of Turkish Language Society twice by two researchers to establish the reliability and validity of the analysis. A total of 406 idioms were found within the 8 albums of Tarkan. The album in which the highest number of idioms was encountered is “Metamorfoz.” In this album, a total of 111 idioms has been used.
