It triggered earthquake environmental effects (EEEs) on Samos Island detected by field surveys, relevant question- Citation: Mavroulis, S.; Triantafyllou, naires, and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) analysis. The primary EEEs detected I.; Karavias, A.; Gogou, M.; in the field comprise coseismic uplift imprinted on rocky coasts and port facilities around Samos and Katsetsiadou, K.-N.; Lekkas, E.; coseismic surface ruptures in northern Samos. The secondary EEEs were mainly observed in northern Papadopoulos, G.A.; Parcharidis, I. Samos and include slope failures, liquefaction, hydrological anomalies, and ground cracks. With the Primary and Secondary contribution of the InSAR, subsidence was detected and slope movements were also identified in Environmental Effects Triggered by inaccessible areas. -

The analysis combines post‐event field survey observations, video records examination and an evaluation of interviews with local authority officers and eyewitnesses. The event was a near‐field tsunami arriving within 10’‐15’ at the north coast of Samos and at the eastern side of Ikaria island. From seven far‐field tide records we calculated tsunami magnitude Mt=Mw=6.8. In Vathy town (NE Samos) two strong inundations have been clearly recognized with arrival time difference of 20’, the second being more powerful as compared to the first. Maximum run‐up was measured at h~2.0 m asl in run‐in distance d=97 m. In Karlovasi (NW Samos) a strong inundation (h~1.70 m at d~80 m) was reported immediately after an initial sea water retreat in ~10’ after the earthquake. -

The epicenter was located near the northern coasts of Samos island. This tectonic event produced an uplift of the whole island as well as several cases of infrastructure damage, while a small tsunami followed the mainshock. Underwater and coastal geological, geomorphological, biological obser- vations and measurements were performed at the entire coast revealing a complex character for the uplift. At the northwestern part of the island, maximum vertical displacements of +35 ± 5 cm were recorded at the northwestern tip, at Agios Isidoros. Conversely, the southeastern part was known for its subsidence through submerged archaeological remains and former sea level standstills. The 2020 underwater survey unveiled uplifted but still drowned sea level indicators. The vertical displacement at the south and southeastern part ranges between +23 ± 5 and +8 ± 5 cm suggesting a gradual fading of the uplift towards the east. The crucial value of tidal notches, as markers of co-seismic events, was validated from the outcome of this study. The co-seismic response of Samos coastal zone to the 30th October earthquake provides a basis for understanding the complex tectonics of this area. -

Index, 31-33 INTRODUCTORY Place-name study is grounded in linguistics but requires, in addition, historical, geographic, and topographic information on the area and con- siderable combinations, adequate knowledge of synchronic and/or suc- cessive contacts of peoples who lived in the same area and of their respective languages in interaction and interference. The results are, consequently, commensurate with the spectrum of these requirements. The study of 2 Demetrius J. Georgacas place-names and other names contributes to the linguistic picture but also, and primarily, to the illumination of the past history of the area con- cerned. Since few scholars are usually so profoundly equipped, it is metho- dology that guides such place-name research and leads it to satisfactory results.
