One of the main dispersants, Corexit 9527, contains the chemical butoxyethanol, a blood, kidney, and liver toxicant, writes University of Washing- ton toxicologist Dr. Steven Gilbert on the chemical database site Toxipedia.org. Nine days after granting BP permission to use oil dispersants to clean up the spill, the EPA asked the company to replace Corexit with a less-toxic dispersant. BP refused, even though EPA research pointed to 12 disper- sants it deemed “more effective” than Co- rexit. EPA tests also noted that Corexit was more toxic to shrimp—a major economic resource for the Gulf coast—than seven of the alternative dispersants on its list. In addition, toxins from the spill are mak- ing their way inland. Oil-soaked boom—or plastic and fabric barriers used to contain the spill—are currently being trucked to several landfills and incinerators in Louisiana, Missis- sippi, Alabama, and Florida.
