Thoughts from Fr. Bill ...... Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Happy Fall!! Life is a puzzle - there are so many things we do not understand: Why is there evil? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do some people live to a ripe old age while others die before they’ve had a chance to live? Why can’t we seem to get along? Why are some people fabulously wealthy or healthy or fortunate or all of these while others struggle simply to survive? Oddly, there is some freedom in not having all the answers. We don’t have to be able to see the whole picture in order to know that “all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well,” as the medieval mystic put it. Practice surrendering to the mystery. ------

Tuesday is the Feast of Cosmas and Damian . Both were brothers and physicians! They were known as the “moneyless ones” because of their gratuitous care of the sick. They are patrons of physicians, surgeons, druggists, barbers and the blind. ------

Wednesday is the Feast of Saint Vincent de Paul . He was a man of many talents, but he is remembered especially as the great apostle to the poor. He ministered to the sick, prisoners, foundlings, prostitutes, slaves, beggars and outcasts. He is the universal patron of all works of . ------

Thursday is the Feast of Saint Wenceslaus and Saint Lawrence and Martyrs . Saint Wenceslaus died at the age of 22 by the hands of his . He is the patron saint of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Saint Lawrence Ruiz is among the 16 martyrs remembered today. They were killed in Nagasaki, Japan. After enduring horrible tortures, their bodies were burned and their ashes scattered by order of the ruler. ------

Friday is the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. They are known as the three . Michael means “who is like God,” and is the patron of security forces and of the sick; Gabriel means “God’s strength” and is the patron of telecommunications and the postal service; Raphael means “God’s remedy” and is the patron saint of travelers and the blind. ------

Saturday is the Feast of Saint and the Jewish Feast of Yom Kippur. Jerome is one of the Four Great Doctors of the Church. He is famous for saying, “Ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ!” Yom Kippur is the most sacred holy day for our Jewish sisters and brothers.

------A quote from Francis’ Laudato Si´, On Care For Our Common Home : Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. He is the patron saint of all who study and work in the area of ecology and he is also much loved by non-Christians. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society and interior peace. (Laudato Si´, 218) ------

Question of the Week: How will I stop acting like a self-appointed judge of “latecomers” and begin serving as a member of God’s “welcome wagon”? After all, God has welcomed even ME! ------

Our Psalm Response this week, “The Lord is near to all who call upon him,” reminds us that the Lord is near enough to hear us when we call out! ------Peace, Fr. Bill Here we go Steelers, here we go!

Trying to live a full life in the service of the Lord, failing frequently and falling on the mercy of God each time. Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 24 , 2017
