Curated by Martin Scorsese, this collection focuses on pieces from Asia, including the seminal Insiang (Philippines) and Taipei Story (Taiwan). If you're looking for more "action" than "arthouse", Criterion also released a double feature of Police Story and Police Story 2 (Hong Kong). The films cemented Jackie Chan as one of the greatest stuntmen, choreographers, and action directors of all time (and possibly, actually insane). If you're looking for comedy, Taika Waititi's Jo Jo Rabbit (New Zealnd) is a scathing satire of Nazi Germany. And the elephant in the living room: Parasite (South Korea)! If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? Presitge: Hiroshima (): A harrowing look at the effects of the Little Boy nuclear attack on the city. A less bleak procedural, Park Chan- wook's JSA (Joint Security Area) (South Korea) follows the investigation of a multiple homicide in the DMZ. Modern master Ang Lee's Lust, Caution (Taiwan) similarly explores espionage and intrigued, but was overlooked at the time of its release by receiving a death knell label of NC- 17 from the MPAA. For something more potentially more relatable, Bing Liu's documentary,Minding the Gap (USA) follows a trio of friends in a desolate Illinois town as they try to make it as skateboarders. The Yellow Handkerchief likewise shows the universality of the difficulties young people face. Animation: Obviously, no review of Asian cinema would be complete without mentioning the massive contributions to animation from that region of the world. And while 's excellence cannot be overstated, there's a ton more out there. There's serious work like Perfect Blue (Japan), which follows an idol singer as she loses her grip on reality. And there's lighter fare, such as the musical mermaid adventure (Japan) and the 3D animation adaptation of the classic manga, Lupin III: The First (Japan). But your viewing should stop with anime! Big Fish and Begonia is a great intro to Chinese fantasy and Satellite Girl and Milk Cow is a beautifully quirky Korean sci-fi romp. With greater recognition than ever, from Oscar-winning Chloe Zhao to the blockbuster-directing Jon M. Chu and performers as diverse as Akwafina to Steven Yeun to THE ROCK to Temuera Morrison (yes, Boba Fett is a Pacific Islander) to Hiroyuki Sanada to Michelle Yeoh to Jamie Chung, filmmakers of Asian & Pacific Island descent are making films at every level in every genre. That's not even getting into Kurosawa, Ozu, Kar-wai, revolutionary filmmakers without whom the artform would not be the same. Silent and Early Film: Kino Lorber has the terrific collection, Pioneers of African American Cinema, a collection of nearly 30 short and feature- length films from 1915 to 1978. These "race films" (as they were then known) were made outside of the studio system and feature generally lower budgets, but have held up every bit as well as their expensive counterparts. Blaxploitation: Shaft and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song heralded a revolution in American cinema and genre filmmaking. Throughout the 1970s, black audiences could see themselves on the silver screen as heroes, as well as realities they lived daily. The era marked the point at which black audiences were acknowledged and represented. Cult hits like Blacula, Boss, and The Last Dragon were all produced in this time period. Mainstream: The 1980s and 1990s saw Spike Lee's frank depictions of black life in his extensive filmography and John Singleton and Mario van Peebles (son of director/writer/star of Sweet Sweetback 's Melvin van Peebles) shined a light on the criminal issues faced by modern youth in Boyz N the Hood and New Jack City , respectively. The first black, female filmmaker to have a film shown in US cinemas was only in 1991, with Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust, paving the way for the likes of Debbie Allen, Kasi Lemmons, and Ava Duvernay. The Wesley Snipes-starring Blade saved the superhero genre the year after the disastrous Batman & Robin and convinced a near-bankrupt Marvel Comics to re-evaluate their film division and eventually led to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the 2010s, postmodern hits like Get Out from Jordan Peele and Sorry to Bother You by Boots Riley garnered critical acclaim in their explorations of racial dynamics, while Barry Jenkins' back-to-back Oscar winners Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk (the former being the first Best Picture winner with an all-black cast and/or LGBT theme) helped to finally get the recognition black cinema deserves. From being forced outside of the studios to billion-dollar superhero blockbusters, there have been innumerable black filmmakers, writers, producers, actors like Whoopi Goldberg, Sidney Poitier, Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Coogler, Tyler Perry, Angela Bassett, Idris Elba, Dorothy Dandridge, and too many more to list, who blazed trails, set standards, and continue to push forward. Popular reviews. this feels like the kind of weird shit i would come up with at 4 am after drinking 6 cans of coke in a row. Imagine eating some kimchi laced with acid and then going to a Korean karaoke bar. The results may not even come close to the spectacular strangeness that Satellite Girl And Milk Cow offers. In this feature debut from Hyung Yun Chang (Wolf Daddy, Coffee Samurai) we meet teenagers that turn into anthropomorphic animals when their hearts are broken (including our protagonist, an aspiring singer turned cow), a girl who is also a satellite, a talking roll of moustached embossed toilet paper who is also a wizard and a walking incinerator that plucks the livers from the animal-turned kids and then burns them are some of the things you will encounter on the journey. If you love weird and wonderful animation… There's a magical roll of toilet paper with little arms and a mustache that is supposed to be Merlin the Wizard and that's not even the weirdest thing going on. I'm mostly just confused by this. Korean animation is an abomination. Now don't get me wrong, they do pretty great when doing kids TV shows and working for clients in the US, but when they attempt to do an animated feature film, it's a disaster. And this is at the bottom of the barrel. It's just too absurb. When Koreans tackle on absurdity, they're usually good comedically and when things need to get serious, they know how to balance it. They can make a story of a living doggy poop be a tearjerker. And Japanese anime does it better than Koreans. But this? It fails spectacularly. When it's meant to be dramatic or intense, I laughed. Any attempts made to be comedic is… This is the best film I've ever seen about a satellite who transforms into a girl and befriends a boy who's turned into a cow featuring a talking toilet roll. Ever. Obviously it's all kinds of weird in a charming way but unfortunately there's not really enough story to sustain the running time. I wonder what Noam Chomsky would make of this. The novelty wears off quickly and then you're left with a substandard slice of life science fiction romance that doesn't really work. Full disclosure: I watched this movie very late at night, and I was slightly drunk. I could watch that lil magic toilet paper roll- I mean fairy- run around forever with his cute lil legs and mustache. So the broken hearted become animals? I hope that if I was in this universe I’d be a cute lil otter or maybe flamingo. What a strange trip of a movie. If you end up watching this, don’t over think things or ask too many questions because then it might not be as good. I also think I need to rewatch this to fully understand what happened or pick up things I may have missed! This is a hard one for me to rate. On the one hand, I loved the idea of the story, I enjoyed how different and quirky it was, and I thought the character designs were great. Occasionally I even saw some Studio Ghibli influence, which is never a bad thing to be reminiscent of. But on the other hand, I feel like this missed multiple opportunities to be truly great. Interesting characters like Merlin (a wizard that has been transformed into a roll of toilet paper), the Witch of the North (a boar that can summon pig snouts to investigate things for her), and the Incinerator (the big bad, and it's exactly what it sounds like), are never explored to… God awful children's movie that uses faux Ghibli cover art to trick Wal-mart into selling it with the Ghibli titles. This is South Korea's version of Brinquedo, Dingo, Golden Times, Bevenfield, etc. This is a story about a satellite that falls from space after hearing a pretty garbage song and then a toilet paper roll wizard turns her into a girl and a terribly annoying singer boy turns into a cow and they fall in love for no reason and it is so bad and so weird but not in a good way more like a terrible let's fast forward this movie because it is bad kind of way. Ahhhhhh. Okay, stop me if you've heard this one before. An old satellite over Korea eventually falls from space and catches fire making it look like a comet. Meanwhile a milk cow who is actually a human boy transformed into that due to a broken heart is being protected by Merlin, a wizard in the form of a toilet paper roll, from the evil Incinerator that tries to eliminate all the heartbroken animal people. Toilet paper wizard dude thinks it's a comet and uses his magic and the comet to gain an advantage in battle and turns it into Satellite Girl. So Satellite Girl, toilet paper wizard, and male milk cow work together to stop both the Incinerator and an evil… Recent reviews. This is up there with some of the most WTF things I've ever seen and it is extremely terrible. and yet I kinda enjoyed it? I don't know, its terrible animated, it felt like a film version of a YouTube poop. Its like if The Asylum decided to make knock off Ghibli films. The story's barely exists, the characters are lifeless, and nothing about it makes a lick of sense. its just a bunch of stupid ideas barely stitched together. I mean, I was expecting this to be odd, its called Satellite Girl and Milk Cow for goodness sake, but I was hoping it would be more charming than odd. that was not the case. A sentient steam oven is… i though this was going to be a cute movie but instead it's unbearable omg i couldn't even finish it, the only star is for Yoo Ah-In. "Satellite Girl and Milk Cow" is one of the gayest movies I've ever seen– I loved it. It follows a conscious satellite who is suddenly stirred when it hears a beautiful song being played from Earth. The satellite then rushes to find the musician behind the song, meanwhile getting transformed into a young girl by Merlin, the famous wizard, who is trapped in a toilet paper roll. Go figure. The musician, after getting his heart broken by a female friend, becomes a (milk) cow and is on the run from a monstrous incinerator who will burn him alive and a spooky mob man who can teleport through mirrored surfaces. Action packed and very childish, we just hope the inevitable romance can start a little sooner. Blink and you might miss a handful of perfectly animated moments. –Dunzo 2019. Well about this movie the concept of this movie was slightly weird but in all honesty, it was enjoyable enough. This movie is pretty much about a guy who was once a singer and then gets turned into a cow then meets this satellite who takes a form of a cute looking girl around (13 or 14) and this talking toilet paper and the whole story begins. Animation wise it was good. Voice acting wise it was perfect (I watched the dub by GKIDS). Overall it is good watch. I recomand it although it may or may not be for everyone.
