ANIMA: TAKE 35... ACTION!

Anima 2016, the Brussels International Festival, will be taking over Flagey for ten days to celebrate the world of animation. It’ll be happening at Flagey in Brussels from 5th to 14th February, but also in and around different theatres in Flanders and Wallonia. IN A FEW FIGURES

Last year, over 40,000 people visited during the Carnaval break. We’re ready to do it all over again this year, and are waiting (im)patiently to welcome you all to Flagey in February.

10 ANIMA 2016 NEW BRITISH GEMS To show off the vitality of current animation production in the UK, Anima asked Deb Singleton, Co-Director of the new Manchester Animation Festival and member of the Anima Belgian competition jury, to come up with a 100% British programme. A great showcase, made up of student and awarded films and a few rare gems.

STUDYING ANIMATION IN THE UK Representatives from three of the most well-known animation schools in England, Tim Webb from the Royal College of Art (London), Robert Bradbrook from the National Film and Television School (Beaconsfield) and Jonathan Hodgson from Middlesex University (London), will be here to present their schools and show a few films made by their students.

AARDMAN’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY While Japan is known for its legendary Studio Ghibli, Great Britain has Aardman Animations, the studio where Morph, Wallace & Gromit, Ginger, the Pirate Captain, Shaun and many other plasticine characters saw the light of day. The famous studio will be blowing out its forty candles this year, and, of course, Anima didn’t want to miss that. Peter Lord, co-founder of the studio, will be with us with a surprise programme tucked up his sleeve, especially created for the occasion.

THE BRITISH TOUCH This compilation of shorts aims to show the work of some British animators from the 1980s and 90s. There was a multitude of new talent at that time thanks to the start of the new TV Channel 4, whose watchwords were innovation, creativity, experimentation, originality and subversion... just right for animation!

NIKI LINDROTH VON BAHR (S) Director of Tord and Tord (2010) and Bath House (2014), Niki Lindroth von Bahr was born in 1984 and is based in Stockholm. She graduated as a prop maker from Nordiska Scenografiskolan in 2006 and received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 2014. Tord and Tord won the award for Best Animation at the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival and the Grand Prix at Fredrikstad Animation Festival, while Bath House walked away with the Grand Prix at Anima 2015.

AMAURY COLJON (B) Jury Awards Born in Brussels in 1990, Amaury  Award for Best Belgian Short Film, provided Coljon grew up with and Disney. by SABAM (2.500€) After graduating in CG from La Haute  Grand Prix for Best Short of the Fédération Ecole Albert Jacquard in Namur (2011), Wallonie-Bruxelles, provided by the Fédération he graduated in CG from Gobelins, Wallonie-Bruxelles (2.500€) l’Ecole de l’image in Annecy (2012). An  Author Award provided by SACD (2.500€) animation internship took him to Framestore in London  Best Belgian Student Short Film Award, provided and in 2013, he started as an animator at the Moving by TV Paint (TVPaint Animation Picture Company. In 2014, he joined ILM and has already 11 Edition Standard license, worth 500 €) worked on such films asAvengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. DEB SINGLETON (GB) Deb Singleton joined the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in 2003. Early roles included Animation Co-ordinator for the Channel 4 Animator in Residence scheme and Festival Co-ordinator for the Bradford International Film Festival, Bite the Mango and the Bradford Animation Festival. She became Festival Director of the Bradford Animation Festival in 2007. In early 2015 she joined the Manchester Animation Festival team to help create and develop a new dedicated animation festival.
