DIRECTOR'S NOTE: Mark Twain was and still is a disturbance. His seemingly innocent adventure stories secured for Him a place in literary history. Yet, the universality of His characters and their exploits continue to disturb many of society's sensibilities. His books are often the focus of the "moral majorities" attempts at censorship. After all, a juvenile delinquent coupled with a slave (both considered by the then "moral majority" as "low-life") are not the type of people we normally expect or want to make us aware of our own social inadequacies and moral weaknesses. When Roger Miller and William Hauptman joined forces to bring Twain's famous Novel to life, they were able to keep the light hearted humor and sarcastic wit Twain wrote down many years earlier. Their efforts garnered 7 Tony awards. This show has special significance to SMSU as two of our former students, John Goodman .and John Short, played in the original Broadway production. I would like to thank the production staff, crew, and cast of this production for making my debut in Tent a most exciting experience. Their energy, enthusiasm, and dedication have been wonderful. ]. DIRECTOR'S NOTE: Neil Simon is the most financially successful playwright in the history of American theatre-if not for all time. His first Broadway play was Come Blow Your Horn in 1961. Since then he has had an amazing string of successful plays, musicals and film scripts. Broadway Bound, first produced in New York in 1986, is the third of his autobiographi cal "Eugene" plays preceded by Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues. This year for his most recent play Lost in Yonkers he received the Broadway Tony for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. •

DIRECTOR'S NOTES: The legend of Amphitryon, which chronicles the birth of Hercules, has been used as source material by dramatists down through the ages. Playwright Jean Giradoux reckoned his version of the story was the 38th to have been written - thus the title Amphitryon 38.

The musical play you will see tonight is suggested by a version written by German Romantic playwright Heinrich Von Kleist in 1807. Kleist's play was modeled after a play by the French playwright Moliere, which was in turn adapted from a number of other plays, including one by the Roman playwright Plautus.

In all cases, the dramatists referred to the two Greek gods in the story (Zeus and Hermes) by their more familiar Roman names (Jupiter and Mercury). The authors of Olympus On My Mind have chosen to follow in that tradition.
