Prague Papers on International Relations
The Thököly Uprising in Hungary and the Timing of the Nine Years’ War and the Glorious Revolution1 György Borus2 ABSTRACT The Glorious Revolution of 1688–89 has been regarded primarily as an episode in English domestic politics and has rarely been considered as a European event. Since the tercentenary of the Revolu- tion, a lot has been done to correct this picture. Now it is clear, for example, that without Prince Wil- liam’s powerful military intervention, which was carried out with the full support of the States Gen- eral of the United Provinces, the Revolution would have been impossible. It should also be pointed out, however, that if William had succeeded in organising a powerful anti-French alliance during the early 1680s, he may not have intervened in England at the end of the decade. The timing and cir- cumstances of William’s intervention can only be understood within the context of European events, which should not be confined to Western Europe. This article seeks to explain the interrelationships between the parallel events of the 1680s in the eastern and western parts of the Continent. It argues that the Thököly Uprising played a major part in frustrating William’s plans of organising a power- ful anti-French coalition and delayed the Nine Years’ War (King William’s War) against France un- til 1688. KEYWORDS 1680s; Louis XIV; William of Orange; Count Imre Thököly; Ottoman Empire; Nine Years’ War; Glo- rious Revolution INTRODUCTION The Glorious Revolution of 1688–89 was one of the greatest turning-points in world history. The dethroning of the Catholic James II (1685–88) by his own nephew and son-in-law, William of Orange, the leading political figure of the United Provinces, was to have far-reaching consequences not only for Britain but the whole of West- ern Europe as well. -
The Siege of Belgrade on Stage
Michael Hüttler THEATRE AND CULTURAL MEMORY: THE SIEGE OF BELGRADE ON STAGE Michael Hüttler (Vienna) Abstract: This contribution considers the historical image of Belgrade created by European playwrights and librettists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Istanbul has been for a long time the symbol of an oriental city and lifestyle in the Western European mind – an image that was transmitted especially in poetry and dramatic texts. Belgrade seems to be present in a different way in the European cultural memory. Analysis of the representation of history related to Belgrade in the medium of theatre is based on the four selected historical theatre texts: Hannah Brand’s Huniades, or The Siege of Belgrade (Norwich, 1791/1798); Carl Kisfaludy’s Ilka oder die Einnahme von Griechisch-Weissenburg (Pest, 1814); James Cobb’s The Siege of Belgrade (London 1791/1828); und Friedrich Kaiser’s General Laudon (Vienna, 1875). In this article I would like to investigate the historical image of Belgrade created by European playwrights and librettists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. What are the contents transported in the dramatic texts about Belgrade? Is a certain historical-political context present, which dominates the entertainment factor? Istanbul has been for a long time the symbol of an oriental city and lifestyle in the Western European mind – an image that was transmitted especially in poetry and dramatic texts. Belgrade seems to be present in a different way in the European cultural memory. In his 1963 essay Sur Racine (‘On Racine’) Roland Barthes already posed the question of how to deal academically with the challenge of the relation between history and a work of art, be it music or a dramatic text. -

In 1910, the Hungarian Turanists founded the Turan Association (Magyar Turani Társaság) and began publishing a journal titled Turán. This intellectual movement served as a cultural bridge that brought the two communities closer on the path from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey. Hungarian Turanists supported the war of liberation against imperialism in Anatolia. They founded the Turan News Agency and carried out intensive propaganda regarding the rightfulness of the Turkish National Struggle. Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller
Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller The era of Ottoman Rule, which began in the fourteenth century, is among the most controversial chapters of South-East European history. Over several stages of conquest, some of them several decades long, large parts of South-Eastern Europe were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, or brought under its dominion. While the Ottomans had to surrender the territories north of the Danube and the Sava after the Peace Treaty of 1699, the decline of Ot- toman domination began only in the nineteenth century. Structures of imperial power which had been implemented in varying forms and intensity in different regions were replaced by emerging nation states in the nineteenth century. The development of national identities which accompanied this transformation was greatly determined by the new states distancing themselves from Ottoman rule, and consequently the image of "Turkish rule" has been a mainly negative one until the present. However, latest historical research has shown an increasingly differentiated image of this era of South-East European history. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Military and Political Developments 2. Romanian Warfare in the Austrian-Turkish War of 1715-1718
Introduction The 18th century in the Romanian Countries – Wallachia and Mol- davia – is regarded by Romanian historiography as one of the dar- kest times in Romanian history. The period known as Phanariote, from 1711 to 1821, meant a powerful decrease in sovereignty, auto- nomy, welfare and statute for the two Romanian Principalities. The five Russo-Austrian-Turkish Wars that occurred in the 18th century and the numerous Tatar raids brought the countries to their knees, affected demography, social structures, the economy, and even terri- torial integrity. 13 Andrei Pogăciaș The Phanariote rulers, mainly Greeks appointed by the Ottomans as administrators of the two Principalities, were usually loyal follo- wers of official politics, with the strong aim to keep the local high nobility, known as boyars (Romanian boieri), under strict observati- on and gather as much money as possible for themselves and for the officials in Constantinople they constantly had to bribe. -

This paper is based on data from the handwritten autobiography of Jean- Frédéric Diesbach, which is kept in the Historical Archives in Fribourg, Switzerland, and in which the Battle of Petrovaradin and the siege of Belgrade are discussed. Diesbach, a Swiss nobleman who was originally in the Swiss and French military service, was later transferred to the Austrian army. This well-known European military leader finished his career as a governor of Syracuse in Sicily and a Major General of the Austrian army. A segment of his memories provides a brief description of the Battle of Petro- varadin and the operations of the Austrian army during the siege of Belgrade. Although it is part of the manuscript of a few pages, it has the value of a historical source, because it is the testimony of participants in these events. KEY WORDS: Battle of Petrovaradin, siege of Belgrade, the Austro-Turkish war, Jean- Frédéric Diesbach. 1 [email protected] 2 The paper presents the results of research conducted under the Project No. III 47023 Kosovo and Me- tohija between national identity and European integration , which is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. -

THE BLACK DEATH IN EARLY OTTOMAN TERRITORIES: 1347-1550 The Institute of Economics and Social Sciences of Bilkent University by GISELE MARIEN In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY BILKENT UNIVERSITY ANKARA May 2009 ABSTRACT THE BLACK DEATH IN EARLY OTTOMAN TERRITORIES: 1347-1555 Marien. Gisèle M.A. Department of History Supervisor: Prof. Dr Halil İNALCIK May 2009 The aim of this thesis is to analyze the possible impact of the Black Death on the early Ottoman society. Firstly, a temporal and spatial analysis of the outbreaks was established using contemporary Ottoman, Byzantine and Latin sources. In view of the territorial expansion of the Ottoman state in the period studied, information on the adjacent territories was included. The response towards plague was then evaluated taking into account the information obtained on the frequency and geographical distribution of the disease and contrasted with certain previous theories on the impact of plague on Ottoman society. The study reveals that the high frequency of plague outbreaks identified by this study can be linked to a behavior of overall acceptance and to specific actions of an administrative and religious nature.
